Thomas was released by the 49ers on Tuesday.
Thomas originally joined the 49ers in June after spending the past four seasons with the Commanders. The 33-year-old was then released Aug. 9 before re-signing with the team Thursday, but he did not make it through San Francisco's final cutdown to the 53-man roster. Thomas could be a candidate to come back on the practice squad, otherwise he'll look for an opportunity elsewhere ahead of the regular season. Meanwhile, Jake Tonges should serve as the 49ers' top backup behind George Kittle.

49ers' Logan Thomas: Back with San Francisco
Rotowire
The 49ers re-signed Thomas on Thursday.
The 49ers cut Thomas earlier this month, but he's back with the team to provide depth behind top tight end George Kittle. In that context, Thomas' initial fantasy upside is limited, but the 33-year-old did catch 55 passes with the Commanders last season and could provide streaming value in the event that Kittle misses time.

Logan Thomas: Surprise cut by San Francisco
Rotowire
The 49ers released Thomas (hamstring) on Friday.
Thomas inked a one-year deal with San Francisco back in June and appeared set to provide the team with valuable veteran depth behind top tight end George Kittle, so it's somewhat surprising to see him be released two weeks into training camp. A hamstring injury had kept Thomas out of practice for roughly the last week, but unless he's reached an injury settlement, his release indicates a clean bill of health. Thomas will now look for an opportunity elsewhere in the league, likely as a backup or rotational option for another team.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan announced Friday that Thomas is currently missing practice with a hamstring injury, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Thomas signed with San Francisco back in early June after playing out the last four seasons with Washington. The severity of the tight end's hamstring problem has not been disclosed, but more information should be released in the near future.

49ers' Logan Thomas: In line to sign with 49ers
Rotowire
The 49ers are slated to sign Thomas to a contract, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
A quarterback in college, Thomas has come into his own as a tight end the past four seasons with Washington, hauling in 72 passes in 2020 and 55 last year. Overall, he averaged 9.2 YPC and 6.1 YPT and scored 14 touchdowns on 274 targets in 52 games during that span. With San Francisco, Thomas will provide a veteran presence in its TE room behind starter George Kittle.

Logan Thomas: Being cut by Commanders
Rotowire
Washington announced the release of Thomas on Friday, saving the team roughly $6.5 million in cap space.
Thomas' release leaves the Commanders with about $1.7 million in dead cap space. The veteran tight end is heading into his age-33 season but logged a solid bounce-back effort in 2023, having secured 55 of 79 targets for 496 yards and four scores across 16 regular-season games. A proven contributor capable of moving the chains on offense, Thomas should garner real interest on the free agent market, though he's not guaranteed a chance at a true starting role at this point in his career. Washington also released veteran tackle Charles Leno in a cap-saving move Friday.

Commanders' Logan Thomas: Rebounds in age-32 season
Rotowire
Thomas caught 55 of 79 targets for 496 yards and four touchdowns in 2023.
Thomas suffered an Achilles tear in 2021 and then had only 323 yards and one touchdown in 14 games last season. He bounced back some as a 32-year-old, missing just one game and ultimately posting a receiving line pretty similar to teammate Jahan Dotson's. Many expected QB Sam Howell to really focus on getting the ball to Dotson and Terry McLaurin, but the target distribution ended up being fairly wide in Year 1 under OC Eric Bieniemy (who remains with the team for now, although that could change once a new head coach is named). Thomas has one year left on his contract and is scheduled to make a non-guaranteed $5.34 million base salary plus a $500,000 roster bonus due on the third day (March 15) of the league year, making him a prime candidate to be cut. If he does return to Washington, it'll likely involve an extension or pay cut to lower his $8.3 million cap hit.

Commanders' Logan Thomas: Three grabs in loss
Rotowire
Thomas caught three of four targets for 20 yards in Sunday's 27-10 loss to the 49ers.
Thomas played 28 of the Commanders' 46 offensive snaps Sunday, while backup tight end John Bates was on the field for just three fewer snaps. The veteran Thomas now has 54 catches for 487 yards and four touchdowns in 15 games, his highest marks in each category since the 2020 season.

Commanders' Logan Thomas: Finds end zone against Jets
Rotowire
Thomas caught five of six targets for 36 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 30-28 loss to the Jets.
The tight end caught the only TD pass of the day for a Washington quarterback, connecting with Jacoby Brissett on a 15-yard strike late in the third quarter after Sam Howell had been benched once again. It was Thomas' fourth touchdown of the season but his first since late October, and he could be a more appealing fantasy option in Week 17 against the 49ers if Commanders coach Ron Rivera makes the call to give the start to Brissett.

Commanders' Logan Thomas: TEs to Sit
Rotowire
I thought Thomas had a chance to be a sleeper in Week 15 at the Rams, but he was once again disappointing with one catch for 7 yards on three targets. He's now gone six games in a row without a touchdown, and he's combined for 22 receiving yards on three catches in his past three games, with just eight targets. There's little reason to trust Thomas in any Fantasy leagues in Week 16 at the Jets.

Commanders' Logan Thomas: Held to one catch
Rotowire
Thomas caught one of three targets for seven yards in a 28-20 loss to the Rams on Sunday.
After averaging 4.3 catches for 40.9 yards and 0.3 TDs in his first 10 appearances this year, Thomas has just three catches for 22 yards on eight targets over his past three games. Next up is a Week 16 matchup with the Jets.

Commanders' Logan Thomas: Sleeper TEs
Rotowire
Thomas has not been a good Fantasy tight end of late with a combined 5.7 PPR points in his past two games against Dallas and Miami, and he only has two catches for 15 yards on five targets over that span. But I'm going to use Thomas as a streamer in Week 15 at the Rams since he has a great matchup. Three tight ends in a row -- Trey McBride in Week 12, David Njoku in Week 13 and Isaiah Likely in Week 14 -- have scored at least 13 PPR points against the Rams, and hopefully Thomas can follow suit.

Thomas struggled going into Washington's bye in Week 14 with a combined 5.7 PPR points in his past two games against Dallas and Miami, but he has a great matchup in Week 15 at the Rams. Commanders' Logan Thomas: Held catchless
Rotowire
Thomas finished without a catch on one target in a 45-15 loss to Miami on Sunday.
Thomas enters a Week 14 bye having just posted two of his three worst fantasy performances of the season in back-to-back weeks. It hasn't cost him snaps and routes, but there is some chance the Commanders give Cole Turner some of those reps now that a playoff appearance is out of the question and plans for 2024 become a consideration. That said, Thomas still is the clear favorite to lead the team's TEs in snaps, routes and targets when the Commanders return from their bye for a Week 15 road game at the Rams.

Commanders' Logan Thomas: Held to 15 yards
Rotowire
Thomas caught two of four targets for 15 yards in Thursday's 45-10 loss to Dallas.
Thomas turned in his second-worst fantasy performance in 11 appearances this season, following five straight games with at least four catches and 31 yards. He's now averaging 4.1 receptions for 38.5 yards and 0.27 touchdowns on 5.6 targets for the campaign heading into a Week 13 home game against the Dolphins.

Commanders' Logan Thomas: TEs to Sit

I don't mind Thomas as a low-end starter in PPR since he has three games in his past four outings with at least five catches, and he's scored at least 8.8 PPR points in three of his past four games. But he only has one touchdown since Week 5, and the Dallas defense should make things tough on Sam Howell on Thanksgiving. Thomas has been over 50 receiving yards just three times this year, and hopefully his volume will remain intact to help his Fantasy value in PPR in Week 12 if you're starting him.

Commanders' Logan Thomas: Tallies 58 yards
Rotowire
Thomas recorded five receptions on eight targets for 58 yards in Sunday's 31-19 loss to the Giants. He also lost a fumble.
Thomas tied for second on the team in receptions with Terry McLaurin. He made good use of the opportunity by topping 50 receiving yards for the third time this season, due in large part to a 29-yard reception late in the first quarter. However, Thomas also contributed to some of the team's misfortune on the scoreboard, as his fumble led directly to a Giants touchdown. In addition, all three of his uncaught targets were intercepted. Despite those miscues, Thomas should remain a key part of the offense in Week 12 against Dallas, as he has seen at least five targets in five consecutive games.
Thomas is not exciting, but he is the only tight end in my top 12 who is available in even a third of leagues. He only has one game below nine Fantasy points in the last month.

Commanders' Logan Thomas: Week 11 Waiver Priority List
Rotowire
Thomas didn't have a big game in Week 10 at Seattle with five catches for 40 yards on five targets, but he's now scored at least nine PPR points in four of his past six games, including two games with at least 16.4 PPR points over that span. He's been a reliable option for Sam Howell, and that should continue for the rest of the season. Thomas is worth adding for up to 5 percent of your FAB.
