  • Lions' Jarrad Davis: Back with Detroit

Davis signed a one-year deal with the Lions on Friday, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports. Davis spent his first four seasons in the NFL with the Lions before signing a one-year, $5.5 million contract with the Jets ahead of the 2021 campaign. However, he failed to live up to the deal, as an ankle injury sidelined him for the first six weeks of the season. Back with Detroit, he isn't guaranteed a significant defensive role, but Davis' past efforts have drawn the attention of head coach Dan Campbell, and he'll definitely have an opportunity to compete for a sizable role during training camp.

Davis (ankle) will be activated off injured reserve for Sunday's contest against the Bengals, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports. Davis will make his regular-season debut Sunday after suffering an ankle injury during the preseason that landed him on IR. Cimini reports that the 25-year-old linebacker will likely draw the start against the Bengals and play the majority of the snaps. Davis signed a one-year deal with the Jets this offseason after registering 46 tackles and two forced fumbles for the Lions during the 2020 campaign.

Davis (ankle) was designated to return from injured reserve Wednesday, Ethan Greenberg of the Jets' official site reports. The team will have 21 days to either activate him or place him back on IR for the remainder of the season. Davis played in 14 games for the Lions -- logging 46 tackles, 0.5 sacks and two forced fumbles -- last year before signing with the Jets this offseason.

  • Jets' Jarrad Davis: Could return Week 7

Coach Robert Saleh hopes Davis (ankle) will be able to return from injured reserve following the Jets' Week 6 bye, Eric Allen of the Jets' official site reports. Davis started the season on injured reserve after suffering the ankle injury during the preseason, and he may be able to return after missing the first five games of the campaign. The 25-year-old is expected to start alongside C.J. Mosley at linebacker once healthy, which would relegate fill-in starter Quincy Williams to a rotational role.

  • Jets' Jarrad Davis: Lands on IR

The Jets placed Davis (ankle) on injured reserve Wednesday. Davis will be eligible to return after Week 3, but coach Robert Saleh has already declared Week 7 as the most likely return date. The Jets hope the 26-year-old can bounce back to the type of the player he was in his first two seasons in the league when he racked up 196 tackles between the 2017 and 2018 campaigns.

  • Jets' Jarrad Davis: Signs one-year deal with Jets

Davis agreed to a one-year, $7 million contract with the Jets on Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. After taking the league by storm with 196 tackles and eight sacks in 30 games over his first two seasons, Davis has regressed in the past two campaigns, tacking on just 109 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 25 appearances. The Jets are hoping a change of scenery will help the Lions' 2017 first-round pick rediscover the success he had to begin his career.

  • Lions' Jarrad Davis: Falters in contract year

Davis recorded 46 tackles, a half-sack and two forced fumbles over 14 games in 2020. It's been quite a tumble for the 2017 first-round pick who appeared to be the Lions' middle linebacker of the future as recently as 2018. After a high-ankle sprain derailed Davis's 2019 campaign, the 2020 season brought him a new defensive coordinator and position coach, not to mention a new head coach and GM by season's end. The latter changes helped lead Davis to see less than 40 percent of the defensive snaps in 10 of 14 games in 2020, which, in turn, ultimately led to career lows across the board. With his fifth-year option having already been declined, Davis will enter the offseason as an unrestricted free agent.

  • Lions' Jarrad Davis: Produces nine tackles

Davis made nine tackles (four solo) in Saturday's 47-7 loss to the Buccaneers. Davis made his fourth start of the season, but he only played 51 percent of the snaps on defense. Nevertheless, the 2017 first-round pick posted a season high in tackles, bringing his 2020 total to 44 stops. Whether he starts in Week 17 against the Vikings likely depends on if Jamie Collins (neck) is cleared to play.

  • Lions' Jarrad Davis: Backed by Patricia

Davis (ankle) remains in Detroit's plans despite the team declining to pick up his fifth-year option, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports. "I think JD is a cornerstone of what we're trying to do, and he's in those big-picture plans of where we're trying to go," head coach Matt Patricia said during a recent video call with reporters. After bringing in two notable free-agent linebackers this offseason, Detroit officially declined to pick up Davis' fifth-year option this month. However, Patricia doesn't make it seem as if the writing is on the wall for Davis' time in Detroit despite a down 2019 season. Instead, the team is probably just unwilling to pay over $10 million for Davis' services in 2021, preferring to instead work out a long-term deal with a lesser cap hit. While it remains to be seen to what extent Jamie Collins' arrival will specifically impact Davis' role, it's possible Davis could continue to post strong tackle numbers in 2020 (he had 196 total tackles over his first two NFL seasons) and beyond, even if his real-life contributions aren't actually worthy of his first-round pedigree.

Davis recorded five tackles (three solo), one sack, a forced fumble and a pass defensed across 66 snaps in Sunday's win over the Giants. Davis continues to make game-changing plays for the Lions this season. The third-year pro laid a pivotal hit on Daniel Jones early in the first quarter, which forced the rookie to throw a backwards pass that was scooped and scored by fellow linebacker Devon Kennard to give the Lions the early lead. Sunday also marked the first sack of the season for Davis.

  • Lions' Jarrad Davis: Questionable vs. Philly

Davis (ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's matchup with the Eagles. Davis was limited in practice all week, so it's hard to tell exactly how healthy the linebacker is at this time while nursing a sprained ankle. He will likely end up being a game-time decision in Philadelphia this weekend.

  • Lions' Jarrad Davis: Inactive for Sunday's contest

Davis (ankle) is inactive for Sunday's game versus the Cardinals. Davis has been dealing with a high-ankle sprain and is not healthy enough for the season opener. This is a major hit to the Lions' defense, as Davis made 100 tackles, six sacks and five pass breakups last season. Rookie second-round pick Jahlani Tavai is expected to start at middle linebacker Sunday.

  • Lions' Jarrad Davis: Exits with leg injury

Davis was carted off the field in Friday's preseason tilt with Buffalo due to a leg injury, Chris Burke of The Athletic reports. Davis was injured after Devon Kennard was knocked into the back of his legs. It's unclear how serious the injury is, although the 23-year-old seemed to be in serious discomfort as he was carted to the locker room. If Davis misses significant time, 2019 second-round pick Jahlani Tavai would likely slide over to middle linebacker and serve as a sneaky IDP prospect in Matt Patricia's versatile defense during the 2019 campaign. Davis racked up 100 tackles and six sacks over 16 games in that role last season.

  • Lions' Jarrad Davis: Back to work Thursday

Davis (undisclosed) returned to practice Thursday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports. While the nature of Davis' injury was seemingly unclear, it appears that it was only serious enough to hold him out of practice for just under two weeks. The 23-year-old figures to play a key role in Detroit's linebacking corps this season.

  • Lions' Jarrad Davis: Adds to sack total

Davis tallied eight tackles, one sack. and one pass breakup during Sunday's victory over the Cardinals. Davis played a great game Sunday, delivering numerous hard hits but also jumping on a number of plays against the run. While he's been an inconsistent IDP option this season, Davis has the upside to make him worthy of fantasy consideration in any given week. The 2017 first-rounder could particularly be a nice play this Sunday against a Bills team that has attempted the sixth-most running plays and sixth-least passing plays, and which could be without stud tailback LeSean McCoy (hamstring).
