  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Missing at least four games

The Chiefs are slated to place Edwards-Helaire (illness) on the reserve/non-football illness list Monday, Field Yates of ESPN reports. Edwards-Helaire regularly missed practices during training camp, and he also revealed in July that he deals with post-traumatic stress disorder. His placement on the NFI list will rule him out for at least the first four games of the season and position Samaje Perine for a key backup role behind starting running back Isiah Pacheco. Meanwhile, UDFA Carson Steele bumps up into the No. 3 spot.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: In the mix behind Pacheco

Edwards-Helaire (illness) remains in line to fill a depth role out of the backfield behind Isiah Pacheco to begin the regular season, Jesse Newell of the Kansas City Star reports. Edwards-Helaire, who revealed last month that he deals with post-traumatic stress disorder, has missed a number of practices in training camp. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said Tuesday that despite the missed time, the Chiefs "know who Clyde is and what he's done" and "know now what his strengths are" and "how to use him." Along with Edwards-Helaire, Deneric Prince and Carson Steele are also in the team's running back mix behind Pacheco.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Expected back at practice

Coach Andy Reid indicated that he expects Edwards-Helaire (illness) to practice Monday, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports. Edwards-Helaire didn't play in Saturday's preseason game against the Lions, and it's unclear if he'll see snaps in Kansas City's exhibition finale versus the Bears on Thursday. When available, Edwards-Helaire slots in behind top back Isiah Pacheco, but the 2020 first-rounder's status is worth monitoring ahead of Week 1. In addition to Pacheco and Edwards-Helaire, Deneric Prince and Carson Steele also could factor into Kansas City's backfield equation out of the gate this season.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Out with illness again

Edwards-Helaire (illness) is not practicing Monday, Charles Goldman of AtoZSports.com reports. Edwards-Helaire suited up for Saturday's preseason loss to Jacksonville after missing time in recent practices due to an illness, and it appears the veteran running back is now sick again. He's competing with Deneric Prince for the No. 2 backfield role behind starter Isiah Pacheco. Edwards-Helaire entered Saturday's game second after Pacheco, with Prince taking the field third among Kansas City's running backs.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Limited action in preseason opener

Edwards-Helaire rushed twice for no gain and wasn't targeted in the Chiefs' 26-13 preseason loss to the Jaguars on Saturday night. The fifth-year pro was the second back to log a carry after Isiah Pacheco helmed the ground attack on the Chiefs' opening drive. The backfield pecking order Saturday mirrors the one Kansas City is expected to start the regular season with, one where Edwards-Helaire logged a modest 87 touches in across 15 regular-season games in 2023.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Returns to practice

Edwards-Helaire (illness) is practicing Wednesday, Harold R. Kuntz of Fox 4 Kansas city reports. Edwards-Helaire recently revealed via social media that he struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder, which is seemingly at least part of the reason he's been in and out of practice this summer. Of course, it's possible he also dealt with an illness unrelated to PTSD. Either way, Edwards-Helaire seems to have participated in more practices than he's missed, and there's not much concern about his knowledge of the Chiefs offense in his fifth season under head coach Andy Reid. He's competing with Deneric Prince for the No. 2 role out of the backfield behind locked-in starter Isiah Pacheco.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Dealing with illness

Edwards-Helaire (illness) is not practicing Tuesday, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports. Edwards-Helaire looks to primarily be competing with 2023 UDFA Deneric Prince for the No. 2 role behind starter Isiah Pacheco, so having to miss further reps could be significant. The fifth-year veteran landed on the active/non-football illness earlier in camp, and he missed a few days late in July due to sickness, but it remains to be seen whether his current ailment is a related issue.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Returns to practice

Edwards-Helaire (illness) returned to practice Wednesday, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports. Edwards-Helaire is the only running back behind Isiah Pacheco with considerable NFL starting experience, but reports from the first week of training camp suggested that 2023 undrafted free agent Deneric Prince was repping ahead of Edwards-Helaire during run periods. While it remains to be seen if Prince is truly pushing ahead of Edwards-Helaire on the depth chart, it should at least be taken as a hint that the latter wouldn't take over all of Pacheco's workload in the event Kansas City's starting back missed time with an injury. In any case, missing a couple practices with an illness shouldn't have any impact on the depth-chart slotting.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Managing illness

Edwards-Helaire was held out of practice Sunday due to an illness, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports. Edwards-Helaire had been placed on the active/non-football illness earlier in camp before being cleared to return to practice last Sunday. It's not clear if the running back's current ailment is related to the earlier issue. Edwards-Helaire is slated to compete for backup running back duties behind Isiah Pacheco during training camp.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Third through rotation in drills

Edwards-Helaire was the third running back up during the run period of Tuesday's practice for Kansas City, behind starter Isiah Pacheco and 2023 UDFA Deneric Prince, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports. The AFC West powerhouse no longer has Jerick McKinnon on the roster and settled for undrafted rookies as their backfield additions this offseason, but that doesn't mean Edwards-Helaire is a lock for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. Even if he does reprise that role, as many expect, CEH could end up limited to passing-down situations while another back serves as Pacheco's backup on early downs and in short-yardage situations. Kansas City re-signed Edwards-Helaire in March on a one-year, $1.7 million contract that includes $1.325 guaranteed -- considerably less than the average annual value on his rookie contract after the team selected him 32nd overall in the 2020 Draft.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Displays clean bill of health

Edwards-Helaire passed his physical Sunday after the Chiefs placed him on the active/non-football illness list Saturday, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports. Veterans reported to Kansas City's training camp Saturday, and after showing up with some sort of ailment, Edwards-Helaire was able to join his teammates on the practice field one day later. He's thus slated to serve as the primary backup to starting running back Isiah Pacheco in the coming campaign, which amounted to 88 touches in 10 regular-season games in 2022 and 87 touches in 15 such contests last season.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Comes down with illness

Edwards-Helaire practiced in a limited capacity Thursday due to an illness. Isiah Pacheco (toe/ankle), the Chiefs' top running back, has been operating without practice restrictions this week, but reserve RB Jerick McKinnon (groin), who was designated to return from IR on Saturday, has been limited, and Edwards-Helaire joined him in that regard Thursday. As such, the situation behind Pacheco is up in the air just three days before Super Bowl LVIII versus the 49ers, with La'Mical Perine currently the healthy backfield option on the active roster.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Minimal involvement in Week 18

Edwards-Helaire notched two rushes for one yard and gathered in one of two targets for nine yards during Sunday's 13-12 win against the Chargers. While Edwards-Helaire was active for Sunday's regular-season finale, he only took the field for 11 offensive snaps, yielding the vast majority of work to La'Mical Perine, who rushed 21 times for 76 yards. CEH should slot in as a backup for the Chiefs' upcoming playoff run, which begins with a wild-card clash with the Dolphins on Saturday. He could slot into a larger role should Isiah Pacheco miss any postseason action with Jerick McKinnon (groin) already on injured reserve.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Sidesteps injury report

Edwards-Helaire (illness) doesn't appear Wednesday on the Chiefs' initial Week 18 injury report. Edwards-Helaire missed the team's Week 17 win over the Bengals due to an illness, but he was apparently back to full health as the Chiefs began Week 18 prep. With Kansas City locked in as the No. 3 seed in the AFC playoffs regardless of how Week 18 games play out, a healthy Edwards-Helaire could be in store for an expanded role Sunday against the Chargers, along with several of the team's other reserves. Top running back Isiah Pacheco (quadriceps/shoulder) sat out Wednesday's practice and may be headed for a limited workload regardless of whether he's active for Sunday's contest.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Expected to play Sunday

Edwards-Helaire (illness) is expected to play Sunday against the Bengals, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Edwards-Helaire is officially listed as questionable but should be able to go Sunday, despite missing practices Thursday and Friday. Isiah Pacheco (shoulder) is also listed as questionable but is expected to play after clearing concussion protocol, so Edwards-Helaire will likely be working in a change-of-pace capacity in Week 17. After Jerick McKinnon (groin) was placed on injured reserve last week, Edwards-Helaire stepped in as Pacheco's top backup in the Chiefs' 20-14 loss to the Raiders on Christmas Day, playing 29 snaps while carrying four times for six yards and catching three passes for 42 yards.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Questionable after two DNPs

Edwards-Helaire (illness) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bengals. Edwards-Helaire didn't practice Thursday or Friday, and the Chiefs could be woefully shorthanded in the backfield if he's unavailable Sunday, as Isiah Pacheco (concussion/shoulder) is also listed as questionable. Pacheco was a limited participant in Friday's practice after sitting out Wednesday and Thursday. La'Mical Perine is the only other running back on the roster, though Kansas City also has Deneric Prince and Keaontay Ingram on the practice squad. If Edwards-Helaire ultimately suits up Sunday and Pacheco doesn't, the 2020 first-round draft pick out of LSU would be in line to lead Kansas City's backfield.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: RBs to Start

We'll see if Isiah Pacheco (concussion) can play in Week 17 against Cincinnati, and if he does he'll be inserted in this spot. But since Pacheco suffered his concussion in Monday's loss to the Raiders, we expect Edwards-Helaire to start for the Chiefs against the Bengals, and don't forget Jerick McKinnon (groin) is on injured reserve. Cincinnati lost key run stuffer D.J. Reader (quadriceps) early in Week 15 against Minnesota, and Ty Chandler had 24.7 PPR points. Then in Week 16, Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren combined for 24.2 PPR points against the Bengals. Edwards-Helaire has the chance for a standout week if Pacheco is out, so plan to start him in all leagues if he's starting for the Chiefs.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Week 17 Adds (RB Preview)

Jerick McKinnon is on IR and Isiah Pacheco is in the concussion protocol. Considering it's a short week, we shouldn't expect Pacheco to return which should leave Edwards-Helaire to handle the lion's share of the running back work for the Chiefs against a bad Bengals defense.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Week 17 Waiver Priority List

Isiah Pacheco suffered a concussion in Monday's loss to the Raiders, and it might be hard for him to clear the protocol by Sunday for Week 17 against the Bengals. With Jerick McKinnon (groin) on injured reserve, Edwards-Helaire could be looking at a monster workload in a great matchup. Cincinnati lost key run stuffer D.J. Reader (quadriceps) in Week 15, and a running back has scored at least 13.8 PPR points against the Bengals in six of the past seven games.

  • Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Role shrinks against Raiders

Edwards-Helaire carried the ball four times for six yards and caught all three of his targets for 42 yards in Monday's 20-14 loss to Las Vegas. After seeing 30 touches over the prior two games while Isiah Pacheco was sidelined with a shoulder issue, Edwards-Helaire predictably saw his role shrink, with Kansas City's starting RB available again. Pacheco left Monday's game in the second half to get checked for a concussion and didn't return, however, and Edwards-Helaire was able to boost his numbers with a 32-yard reception in the fourth quarter. Jerick McKinnon (groin) is on IR, so Edwards-Helaire could find himself back in the top job Week 17 against the Bengals if Pacheco isn't able to clear the league's protocol for head injuries.
