Raiders' Matt Gay: Early leader in competition
Gay worked as the first-team kicker at Friday's training camp practice and made all of his attempts, Sam Warren of the Athletic reports.
Gay rotated in ahead of Kansei Matsuzawa, the latter of whom had a 40-yard miss in Friday's practice but made the rest of his attempts. With 102 games of regular-season kicking experience under his belt, Gay looks like the early favorite in the competition against the undrafted rookie Matsuzawa.

Raiders' Matt Gay: In camp battle against rookie
Gay is set to compete with Kansei Matsuzawa for the Raiders' kicking role in training camp, Ryan McFadden of ESPN.com reports.
The Raiders moved on from Daniel Carlson after the 2025 season and subsequently brought in the veteran Gay and the rookie Matsuzawa. Gay converted 81 of 101 field-goal attempts over the previous three seasons, split between the Colts, 49ers and Commanders. Matsuzawa is coming off a stellar season at Hawaii, where he made 27 of 29 field-goal attempts in 2025.

Raiders' Matt Gay: Moving to Vegas
Gay is set to sign with the Raiders, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Gay began last season with Washington but was cut in mid-November after going 13-for-19 on field-goal tries. He then signed with San Francisco and went a perfect 8-for-8 on field-goal attempts, but he was just holding down the fort in the absence of Eddy Pineiro and was ultimately cut upon Pineiro's return. Gay's signing likely means that Daniel Carlson, who is an unrestricted free agent, won't return to Las Vegas after eight seasons with the franchise.

Matt Gay: Cut by San Francisco
The 49ers released Gay from their practice squad Tuesday.
Gay stepped in as the 49ers' kicker for the team's last two games while Eddy Pineiro (hamstring) was sidelined and went a perfect 8-for-8 on kicks (four field goals, four extra points). The 49ers' decision to part ways with Gay signals that Pineiro is healthy coming out of the team's Week 14 bye and ready to handle kicking duties Sunday versus the Titans.

49ers' Matt Gay: Returns to practice squad
The 49ers reverted Gay to their practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
With Eddy Pineiro missing the past two weeks due to a hamstring injury, Gay has stepped in and gone 4-for-4 on field goals as well as 4-for-4 on PATs. San Francisco is on bye Week 14 and Pineiro is trending toward active status when the team returns to action Week 15, so Gay's tenure as the club's kicker may have come to an end.

Gay converted both of his field-goal tries and both of his point-after attempts in Monday's 20-9 Week 12 win over Carolina.
Gay played his first game with San Francisco after being elevated from the practice squad due to Eddy Pineiro dealing with a hamstring injury. Gay did his part to contribute to the 49ers' win, knocking in field goals from 47 and 29 yards out while making both his PATs. Pineiro is considered week-to-week, so Gay could serve as San Francisco's kicker again next Sunday in Cleveland.

49ers' Matt Gay: Joins 49ers' practice squad
The 49ers signed Gay to the practice squad Wednesday.
Coach Kyle Shanahan revealed Monday that Eddy Pineiro was diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain following Sunday's win at Arizona and is considered "week-to-week," per David Lombardi of SFStandard.com. The 49ers subsequently tried out five kickers between Tuesday and Wednesday before deciding to roll the dice with Gay, who was waived by the Commanders on Monday. Gay thus will be elevated from the practice squad to handle kicking duties Monday against the Panthers if Pineiro sits out the contest.
