Charlie Smyth: Signed to Saints' practice squad
Smyth was signed to the Saints' practice squad Monday, Ross Jackson of WWL Louisiana reports.
Smyth was waived by the team Sunday, but he ultimately went unclaimed, freeing him up to return to the team's practice squad. The kicker missed his only field-goal attempt, a 56-yard try, during the preseason with New Orleans. He did operate as the team's starting kicker for the final six regular-season games in 2025, going 12-for-16 on field-goal tries while making all 13 of his PATs. Smyth will now operate as a fallback option for the Saints if starting kicker Daniel Carlson doesn't work out in 2026.

Charlie Smyth: Loses kicking competition
Smyth was waived by the Saints on Sunday, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
Smyth served as the Saints' kicker for the final six games of the 2025 regular season, but he has failed to make the team heading into the 2026 campaign. Even with Smyth out of the mix, the Saints still have two options left at kicker in Daniel Carlson and Tanner Brown. Per Triplett's colleague Nick Underhill, the Saints intend to keep Smyth on the practice squad if another team doesn't sign him.

The Saints signed Daniel Carlson to a contract Monday, and Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports that the move indicates that Smythe may not be New Orleans' kicker for the upcoming season.
Smythe joined New Orleans in 2024 through the International Player Pathway and took over as the team's kicker over the final five games of the 2025 regular season, going 12-for-16 on field-goal attempts and 13-for-13 on extra-point tries. However, Smythe was unable to separate himself from Tanner Brown in the kicking competition in training camp, and the Saints have elected add Carlson into the mix. The Saints should confirm who their kicker is for the regular season following Friday's preseason finale against the Cowboys.

Smythe started New Orleans' final six games of the 2025 season, going 12-for-16 on field-goal tries and making all 13 of his extra-point attempts. Saints' Charlie Smyth: Takes over as Saints' kicker late
Smyth went 12-for-16 on field-goal attempts and 13-for-13 on extra-point tries across six games with New Orleans in 2025.
The Northern Irishman joined the Saints in May of 2024 as part of the league's International Player Pathway, but it wasn't until Week 13 of the 2025 season that Smyth made his NFL debut after Blake Grupe was waived by New Orleans in late November. Smyth made quite the NFL debut in Week 13 against the Dolphins, when he nailed his lone field-goal attempt from 56 yards before successfully converting on an onside kick in the fourth quarter. Smyth's most productive performance came in the Saints' Week 16 win against the Jets, when he went 5-for-6 on field goal attempts and 2-for-2 on point-after tries. The Saints may have found their franchise quarterback in second-round rookie Tyler Shough, and if he can take the next step in his development after a full offseason under head coach Kellen Moore, then Smyth would provide some intriguing fantasy value in 2026, especially with half of his games taking place indoors in the Caesars Superdome.

Smyth went 2-for-3 on field-goal attempts and made all four of his PATs in Sunday's 34-26 win over the Titans.
Smyth was able to make multiple field goals for the third straight game. He missed a 43-yard try in the first quarter, but he rebounded well, converting attempts from 56 and 57 yards later in the contest. Smyth has now gone 11-for-14 on field-goal tries, including 6-for-7 from 50-plus yards, while making all 11 of his extra-point attempts over five games with the Saints this season.

Smyth capped Week 17 prep with a limited practice Friday due to an illness that left him questionable in advance of the weekend. Because the Saints don't roster a kicker on the practice squad nor did they sign a kicker to the active roster Saturday, he was in line to resume his standing as the team's placekicker Sunday, which has been confirmed. In four appearances for New Orleans so far, Smyth has netted nine of 11 field-goal attempts and all seven point-after tries.
