Steelers' Pat Freiermuth: Just one grab in preseason opener
Freiermuth caught his only target for two yards in Thursday's 28-9 preseason win over the Packers.
QB Aaron Rodgers wasn't under center in the Steelers' exhibition opener, while the team's top two wideouts DK Metcalf (undisclosed) and Michael Pittman (leg) were sidelined, but top tight ends Freiermuth and Darnell Washington both made cameos in the contest. Freiermuth's lone catch came just short of the goal line, as Mason Rudolph found him on a 4th-and-3 early in the second quarter. The 27-year-old saw his receiving numbers decline in 2025, and while significant competition for targets went out the door this offseason in Jonnu Smith and Kenny Gainwell, the addition of Pittman as a possession receiver could put a ceiling on how much Freiermuth is able to bounce back.

Steelers' Pat Freiermuth: Could have bigger role in 2026
Freiermuth is a candidate to take on a larger role in Pittsburgh's passing game during the 2026 campaign, Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Freiermuth was targeted only 54 times in 17 regular-season games in 2025, tying Jonnu Smith for the lead among Pittsburgh's tight ends while Darnell Washington drew 43 targets. Smith is no longer on the team, and while the Steelers made a high-profile addition at wide receiver by bringing in Michael Pittman, they also lost running back Kenneth Gainwell, who led the team with 73 catches last season. It's worth noting Aaron Rodgers typically hasn't relied heavily on tight ends, as no player at the position has recorded more than 767 receiving yards in a regular season on a team quarterbacked by Rodgers.

Steelers' Pat Freiermuth: Has contract restructured
The Steelers and Freiermuth agreed to a restructured contract Saturday, Nick Farabaugh of PennLive.com reports.
As a result, Freiermuth's cap hit for the 2026 campaign will decrease from its current $11.2 million. Pittsburgh's tight end room lost both Jonnu Smith (released) and Connor Heyward (signed with Raiders) this offseason, which leaves Darnell Washington (forearm) as the only established option at the position aside from Freiermuth. With QB Aaron Rodgers back in the fold as well, Freiermuth may be poised for an uptick in volume after putting together a 41-486-4 line on 54 targets in 17 regular-season games in 2025.

Steelers' Pat Freiermuth: Modest numbers in 2025
Freiermuth secured 41 of 54 targets for 486 yards and four touchdowns across 17 regular-season appearances in 2025.
Freiermuth paced Pittsburgh's tight ends in receiving production, but his ceiling was significantly capped by the presence of both Jonnu Smith and Darnell Washington (forearm), as well as the run-first schematic design of former offensive coordinator Arthur Smith (now at Ohio State). The 27-year-old remains under contract through the 2028 season and will retain a consistent role in Pittsburgh's offense, but both Smith and Washington are set to return in 2026, and the first read for red-zone opportunities will consistently be wide receiver DK Metcalf. Those factors will make Freiermuth a deep sleeper in 2026 fantasy drafts, and it's difficult to envision an upside scenario for him even if new head coach Mike McCarthy manages to spark things on offense.

Steelers' Pat Freiermuth: Strong second half in Sunday's win
Freiermuth brought in three of five targets for 51 yards in Sunday's 26-24 win over the Ravens.
Freiermuth continued his recent trend of coming on late in games when he missed both of his targets in the first half before erupting for 51 yards on three receptions after halftime. The 26-year-old generated a 44-537-4 receiving line while operating in a TE rotation also featuring Darnell Washington (forearm) and Jonnu Smith (38-222-2) in 2025. Freiermuth should continue receiving extra looks in the playoffs after Washington was placed on IR after suffering an injury in Week 17.

Steelers' Pat Freiermuth: Big impact on final drive
Freiermuth recorded three receptions on five targets for 63 yards in Sunday's 13-6 loss to the Browns.
Freiermuth was curiously uninvolved for most of the game, but he was easily Pittsburgh's most productive pass catcher. He logged a 23-yard reception just before halftime to set up a field goal and then recorded long gains of 29 and 11 yards on the Steelers' final drive as they attempted to tie the game. Freiermuth should have the chance to step up again in Week 18 in a pivotal matchup against Baltimore with DK Metcalf (suspension) still sidelined and Darnell Washington (arm) likely to be out.
