  • Maple Leafs' Jake Muzzin: Won't play in 2023-24

Muzzin won't play during the 2023-24 campaign due to a cervical spine injury, Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun reports.

Muzzin hasn't played since Oct. 17, 2022 because of the injury. He's going into the last season of his four-year, $22.5 million contract. It's not clear if the 34-year-old will play again, but if this is the end of his career, he'll hang up his skates after scoring 69 goals and 294 points in 683 contests. Muzzin also won the Stanley Cup with LA in 2014.

  • Maple Leafs' Jake Muzzin: Won't return in 2022-23

Muzzin will miss the rest of the regular season and the playoffs due to a cervical spine injury, ESPN's Kristen Shilton reports.

Muzzin has battled several neck injuries as well as concussions over the past three campaigns, and it's looking like this latest one may be career threatening. Another update on his status is expected ahead of training camp in September, at which point his NHL future should become clearer. Muzzin was limited to just four games this season due to his cervical spine injury, picking up one helper over that span.

  • Maple Leafs' Jake Muzzin: Shifts to LTIR

Muzzin (neck) was placed on long-term injured reserve Tuesday, per CapFriendly.

Muzzin has no timetable to return, so this move gives the Maple Leafs some additional flexibility on the financial side. The defenseman will be out until mid-November at a minimum.

  • Maple Leafs' Jake Muzzin: Injury more serious than thought

Muzzin (neck) may miss extended time, report Jonas Siegel of The Athletic.

After practice Wednesday, teammate Mitch Marner laid out some pretty sobering comments about Muzzin's condition: "Obviously for him it's just making sure that, if he does come back and play this year, or whatever happens, just make sure that he's going to be able to do whatever he wants to do the rest of his life and enjoy the time with his family, his kids." More to come, but this situation sounds career-threatening.

  • Maple Leafs' Jake Muzzin: No timetable for return

Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said Wednesday that there's no timetable for Muzzin's return from a neck injury, Dave McCarthy of NHL.com reports.

Keefe did add that Muzzin's issue isn't a reoccurrence of any head injury he previously sustained. Muzzin also attended a Leafs event Tuesday night and was in the team's facility Wednesday, which is encouraging. As previously reported though, teammate Mitch Marner made sobering remarks about Muzzin: "Obviously for him it's just making sure that, if he does come back and play this year, or whatever happens, just make sure that he's going to be able to do whatever he wants to do the rest of his life and enjoy the time with his family, his kids." With Muzzin sidelined, Rasmus Sandin was paired with Justin Holl during Wednesday's skate while Victor Mete practiced with Mark Giordano.

  • Maple Leafs' Jake Muzzin: Nearing return to action

Muzzin (back) is expected to suit up against Detroit either Friday or Saturday, Joshua Kloke of The Athletic Toronto reports,

At a minimum, Muzzin should get at least one game before the starting of the regular season Oct. 12 versus Montreal. If Muzzin can stay healthy this season, he should be able to get back over the 20-point threshold after managing just 14 points in 2021-22.

  • Maple Leafs' Jake Muzzin: Expected to practice Wednesday

Muzzin (back) is slated to return to practice Wednesday, David Alter of Sports Illustrated reports.

Considering Muzzin will just be returning to practice after a week on the sidelines, it seems unlikely he will be in the lineup to face Montreal on Wednesday. Still, the blueliner getting back on the ice should clear the way for him to be ready for Opening Night. If Muzzin can stay healthy, he should be in line to get back over the 20-point threshold after missing that mark last season.

  • Maple Leafs' Jake Muzzin: Out this week due to back injury

Muzzin will not participate in the first week of camp due to back discomfort, reports Sports Illustrated.

He's due back next week, but this is somewhat concerning. Muzzin is a stalwart on the second pair and only played 47 games last season due to injury. The 33-year-old is an important pillar for the team and fantasy managers who want pucks to stay out of the Leafs' net.

Muzzin scored a goal and added two hits in Sunday's 7-3 loss to the Lightning in Game 4.

Muzzin beat Andrei Vasilevskiy from the point at 15:41 of the third period. While not a particularly high-scoring blueliner, Muzzin's already picked up two goals, one assist and a plus-6 rating through four playoff contests. He's added 18 hits and eight blocked shots, which is less surprising given his physical style of play.

Muzzin (undisclosed) will suit up versus Detroit on Tuesday, David Alter of The Hockey News reports.

Muzzin has been limited to just 45 games this year due to various injuries and will be hard-pressed to get over the 20-point threshold with just two contests remaining. • Maple Leafs' Jake Muzzin: Ruled out against Lightning

Muzzin (undisclosed) will remain on the shelf heading into Thursday's clash with Tampa Bay, David Alter of The Hockey News reports.

Muzzin is traveling with the Leafs for their three-game road trip, so he could be back in action sooner rather than later. In his last four outings, the 33-year-old defenseman has tallied one goal, one assist and 11 shots while averaging 18:42 of ice time. Once cleared to play, Muzzin figures to relegate Timothy Liljegren to a spot in the press box.
