The undrafted defenseman is a long shot to make Minnesota's Opening Night roster, and he should be expected to continue his development with AHL Iowa in 2026-27.

Wild's Viking Gustafsson-Nyberg: Won't play in preseason opener
Gustafsson-Nyberg (undisclosed) won't play in Saturday's preseason contest against the Blackhawks, per Dylan Loucks of The Hockey News.
Head coach John Hynes said Gustafsson-Nyberg was dealing with soreness and wanted to test it out during Saturday's morning skate, but the 22-year-old blueliner left the ice early. Gustafsson-Nyberg made his NHL debut in the 2025-26 campaign after posting 11 points in 38 games at the University of Connecticut. The towering six-foot-six defenseman has a high ceiling, but will likely need at least one full season with AHL Iowa before he's a regular for Minnesota. Assuming he recovers quickly, he could still get a chance to battle for an NHL roster spot.

Wild's Viking Gustafsson-Nyberg: Making NHL debut in St. Louis
Gustafsson-Nyberg (not injury related) is set to make his NHL debut Monday in St. Louis, according to Michael Russo of The Athletic.
Gustafsson-Nyberg will skate on the third pairing next to Matt Kiersted on Monday. The 22-year-old Gustafsson-Nyberg played in 38 games with the University of Connecticut in the NCAA this season, registering 11 helpers and a plus-18 rating. He reported to AHL Iowa after signing an amateur tryout with Minnesota on April 6 and recorded one assist across two appearances.

Gustafsson-Nyberg (not injury related) will be a game-time decision against St. Louis on Monday, according to Michael Russo of The Athletic.
Gustafsson-Nyberg signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Minnesota on Thursday. He had one assist in two games for AHL Iowa after finishing his second season with UConn in 2025-26. If his paperwork clears in time for Monday's matchup against the Blues, then he will make his NHL debut.
