Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Ruled out for final two preseason games
Ovechkin (lower body) has been ruled out for Friday's preseason game against the Bruins and Saturday's preseason game against Philadelphia, Sammi Silber of The Hockey News reports.
Ovechkin fully participated in Thursday's practice session and appears to be trending in the right direction, but head coach Spencer Carbery said Thursday that it isn't essential for the 41-year-old to play in the preseason in order to be ready for Opening Night. The Capitals will exercise caution with Ovechkin as the preseason draws to a close, but Carbery said Friday that he expects Ovechkin to be available for the team's Opening Night matchup against Carolina on Oct. 2.

Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Logs full practice Thursday
Ovechkin (lower body) was a full participant in Thursday's practice and has a chance to play in Friday's preseason game against the Bruins, per Tom Gulitti of NHL.com.
Head coach Spencer Carbury mentioned that it's not essential for Ovechkin to play in the preseason in order for him to be ready for opening night. However, the 41-year-old star's presence at practice was a clear step in the right direction if he is to suit up for opening night. He's coming off a 32-goal, 64-point campaign across 82 regular-season outings in 2025-26, and with the upcoming campaign set to potentially be his last, he'll aim to extend his all-time goal record even further in 2026-27.

Ovechkin signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract with the Capitals on Thursday.
There was uncertainty during the offseason as to whether Ovechkin would continue his NHL career during the 2026-27 campaign, but he'll remain with the Capitals for at least one more season. He appeared in all 82 regular-season games with Washington last year, racking up 32 goals, 32 assists, 134 hits, 26 PIM and 16 blocked shots while averaging 17:27 of ice time. The NHL's all-time leader in goals has appeared in at least 65 regular-season games in five consecutive seasons, and he should remain a reliable contributor during his age-41 season as long as he can remain healthy.
