May declined his mutual option with the Brewers on Thursday, becoming a free agent, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. May will hit the open market after helping deliver the Brewers a World Series championship over the Rays. The right-hander combined to produce a 4.70 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with 144 strikeouts over 145.2 innings in 31 starts with the Cardinals and Brewers during the 2026 regular season.

May will start for the Brewers on Tuesday in Game 4 of the World Series, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. He'll be pitching on two days' rest after tossing a scoreless inning of relief in Game 2. May has made four appearances this postseason, permitting five runs with a 5:2 K:BB over eight frames. The Brewers have a rested bullpen at their disposal, and they could go to it early and often as they attempt to close out the series.

Brewers manager Pat Muphy announced Sunday that May will start Game 3 of the NLDS against the Padres on Tuesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. The veteran right-hander had plenty of ups and downs after being acquired from St. Louis at the trade deadline, posting a 5.65 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 38:15 K:BB across 36.2 innings over 10 starts for Milwaukee. May will still end up getting the call for the Brewers on Tuesday, in part due to his success versus the Padres this year -- across three starts against San Diego, he surrendered just three earned runs with a 22:5 K:BB in 22 frames, including a one-hit shutout in June.

May did not factor into the decision Saturday against the Cardinals, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out five across three innings. May was operating on short rest, with his last start taking place Tuesday against the Phillies. He ended his night with 58 pitches (38 strikes), and the home run he gave up to Alec Burleson in the third inning was the fifth long ball in May's last six outings. The Brewers will have home-field advantage for the playoffs, so May will have extra rest before the beginning of the NLDS. He'll end the regular season with a 7-9 record (31 starts) with a 4.70 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 144:50 K:BB over 145.2 innings, with his strikeouts and innings pitched both being career highs.

May will start Saturday's game against the Cardinals in Milwaukee, Hunter Baumgardt of Fox Sports 920 Milwaukee reports. May will pick up one final start to close out the regular season, but as was the case in his prior two outings, he's likely to be subject to a limited workload. He covered just 2.1 innings in a start Sept. 18 in Baltimore, then was lifted after two innings and 36 pitches in Tuesday's loss to the Phillies. Since May will be taking the hill on the three days' rest Saturday and the Brewers are aiming to keep him fresh for the playoffs, it's reasonable to expect him to be capped at around two or three innings.
