• Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Inside track for roster spot

  Goodman has moved ahead of Drew Romo for a roster spot to begin the regular season, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Goodman began spring training competing for a roster spot and was reportedly only in line to play a few times per week behind the plate. However, Harding relays that Goodman has focused on his defense and improved with the help of veteran Jacob Stallings, particularly in his game calling and framing. Goodman has also gone 7-for-19 at the plate in Cactus League action, including three extra-base hits, which helps his case for an expanded role.

  Goodman is not likely to start more than twice a week as Colorado's catcher to begin the season, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports. Goodman has performed adequately as a pitch framer and also boasts a strong arm, though he is still subpar defensively behind the plate. That will limit his playing time at the position, and his career 59 wRC+ across 301 plate appearances isn't likely to convince the Rockies to force him into the lineup elsewhere. Goodman could stick on the Opening Day roster as a bench bat, but it appears he will find playing time hard to come by initially.

  Goodman is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals. Goodman had appeared to take control of the Rockies' No. 1 catcher job after producing an .861 OPS through the first three weeks of September, but he'll end up hitting the bench for a second straight game Wednesday. Jacob Stallings will receive another start behind the plate with Goodman out of the lineup.

  Goodman isn't in the Rockies' lineup Saturday against the Dodgers. Goodman went 0-for-4 with an RBI and two strikeouts during Friday's series opener. He'll now get a chance to rest Saturday while Jacob Stallings starts behind the plate and bats ninth.

Goodman's power surge continues -- he's homered in back-to-back games and has swatted five long balls over his last seven contests. He's also gone 7-for-24 (.292) in that span, a significant improvement over his .192 batting average for the year. Goodman is up to 13 homers, 34 RBI, 23 runs scored and a .663 OPS through 206 plate appearances.
