Weems cleared waivers Friday and was assigned to Triple-A Rochester. Unsurprisingly, the 31-year-old Weems went unclaimed after logging a 6.70 ERA across 41.2 innings with the Nationals. Weems will join Rochester for the first time this season.

The Nationals designated Weems for assignment Tuesday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. The transaction frees up space on the 40-man roster. Weems has struggled mightily this season, collecting a 6.70 ERA and 35:24 K:BB across 41.2 relief innings.

The Nationals reinstated Weems (lower leg) from the 15-day injured list Saturday, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports. Weems landed on the IL on July 26 due to shin splints in his right leg. He didn't end up needing a rehab stint, and the 31-year-old right-hander will return to the Nationals' bullpen for their weekend series against the Angels. Right-hander Joan Adon was optioned to Triple-A Rochester in a corresponding move.

The Nationals placed Weems on the 15-day injured list Friday with right shin splints, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. It's not year clear how much time Weems might miss. Eduardo Salazar was recalled from Triple-A Rochester to take his spot on the roster and in the bullpen.

Weems has posted a 5.68 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 32:19 K:BB through 38 innings with one win and four holds in 37 appearances. The converted catcher was a fairly reliable bullpen option for the Nationals in 2023, but Weems has regressed nearly across the board this season, with his 18.7 percent strikeout rate and 9.2 percent whiff rate being career lows. The 31-year-old righty hasn't picked up a hold since late April, and that seems unlikely to change in the second half.
