• Marlins' Calvin Faucher: Sharp through three spring outings

  Faucher has tossed three scoreless innings across his three Grapefruit League appearances, allowing one hit and hitting another batter while striking out two. Though the sample size is small, Faucher's excellence thus far in spring could give him an early leg up on emerging as the Marlins' preferred option at closer heading into Opening Day. While his ratios over his 53 total appearances with Miami in 2024 aren't eye-popping (3.19 ERA, 1.40 WHIP), he shined after the All-Star break with a 2.75 ERA (2.10 FIP) and 21.2 K-BB% before spending most of September on the injured list due to a shoulder impingement. Now healthy again, Faucher has resembled the dominant reliever he was over his final two months of the 2024 campaign.

  Faucher will head into spring training as the favorite to close for the Marlins, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. The 29-year-old right-hander took over the closer role in early August last season and recorded six saves in eight chances, finishing the year with a 3.19 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and solid 26.8 percent strikeout rate, but he missed most of September with a shoulder impingement. In his absence, Jesus Tinoco went 3-for-4 in save chances over the final weeks of the campaign, and Tinoco likely represents Faucher's biggest competition for ninth-inning work. Southpaw Andrew Nardi (elbow) could also be in the saves mix if he shows that he's healthy and can regain his 2023 form.

Faucher has been one of the most reliable members of Miami's bullpen this season, posting a 3.19 ERA and 1.40 WHIP through 53.2 innings while picking up six saves and 11 holds. Now that he's set to miss roughly two weeks, it's unclear who Miami will turn to in high-leverage situations, though Anthony Bender, John McMillon and Jesus Tinoco would seem to be the most likely candidates for ninth-inning work.

  Faucher struck out all three batters he faced to earn a save over San Francisco on Sunday. Faucher needed just 13 pitches (10 strikes) to roll through the Giants and close out the 7-5 win. He converted both save chances while striking out five in two perfect innings during the weekend series against San Francisco, and he's now tossed four straight scoreless innings. Since taking over the closer role in Miami after the trade deadline, Faucher has converted six of seven save chances while registering a 4.15 ERA and a 19:6 K:BB through 13 frames. On the year, he owns a 3.25 ERA over 52.2 innings.

  Faucher struck out three batters in a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 9-8 win over the Rockies. Faucher needed 18 pitches, but he got the job done cleanly after the Marlins rallied ahead in the top of the ninth inning. The right-hander is up to four saves in five opportunities since he became the Marlins' closer at the end of July. He's allowed six runs and posted a 13:5 K:BB over 10 innings in August, so he hasn't been dominant, but there are few other options to challenge him on a rebuilding team. Overall, Faucher has a 3.44 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 56:24 K:BB through 49.2 innings this year.
