Angels' Nolan Schanuel: Gets call to big leagues

The Angels selected Schanuel's contract from Double-A Rocket City on Friday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Just over a month ago, Schanuel was taken with the 11th overall pick in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft, so he'll be making quite the rapid ascent to the big leagues. Schanuel batted .370/.510/.493 with one home run, four doubles, 15 RBI and a 10:21 K:BB over 21 games across three levels in the minors to convince the Angels he was ready for his debut. The 21-year-old will likely take over as the Halos' regular first baseman, at least against right-handers, as they try to claw their way back into the playoff hunt. Schanuel also played some corner outfield in college, although he didn't see any action in the outfield in the minors. It's possible he could be used in the outfield on days that C.J. Cron (back) is at first base.

  • Triston Casas 1B | BOS

Red Sox's Triston Casas: Enters 20-homer club

Casas went 1-for-3 with a walk, a solo home run and an additional run scored in Thursday's 10-7 loss to Washington.

Casas drilled a 431-foot homer to center in the third inning, which was Boston's lone run until a six-run uprising in the seventh. The home run was the first baseman's 20th of the season and 11th in 30 games since the All-Star break.

  • Nick Pratto 1B | TEX

Royals' Nick Pratto: Beginning rehab assignment

Pratto (groin) is set to begin a minor-league rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Omaha.

Pratto is recovered from the left groin strain that sent him to the injured list in late July, and he should be ready to return to the Royals' active roster by early next week after a few tune-up games on the farm. The 24-year-old first baseman and corner outfielder has mostly disappointed this season, slashing just .238/.324/.376 with seven homers and 31 RBI across 299 major-league plate appearances.

  • Ryan Noda 1B | BAL

Athletics' Ryan Noda: Hits well in first two rehab games

Noda (jaw) went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI, three walks and a run over two rehab games with Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Noda led off in both games, and although he filled the designated hitter role Tuesday, he was able to play first base for seven innings Wednesday. With his timing at the plate apparently no worse for wear after going on the injured list July 19, Noda may only need one more rehab game before being deemed ready to return.

  • Ty France 1B | SD

Mariners' Ty France: Remains blistering hot Wednesday

France went 1-for-1 with an RBI single, three walks and a run in a win over the Royals on Wednesday.

Fresh off a four-hit tally Tuesday, France played some small ball to perfection a day later with a pesky effort that featured his third multi-walk tally over his last 11 games. The veteran infielder carries a .353 average and astounding .511 on-base percentage over the 45 plate appearances covering that span, a sample during which he's also knocked in 10 runs thanks to a .714 average with runners in scoring position.

  • Astros' Jon Singleton: Scores twice

Singleton went 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored Wednesday against the Marlins.

Singleton has started every game since Aug. 10, when Jose Abreu (back) was placed on the injured list. He's struggled for the majority of that stretch, collecting only four hits in 25 at-bats. While Singleton has run into some bad luck -- he's struck out at only an 11.5 percent clip -- his playing time will almost certainly dry up as soon as Abreu can return, which is likely to occur Sunday.

  • Gabriel Arias SS | CLE

Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Clubs seventh homer

Arias went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 7-2 loss to the Reds.

Arias' fifth-inning blast cut the Guardians' deficit to three runs, but they didn't score again. Arias has just six hits over 12 games in August, but three of those knocks have gone over the fence. He's slashing .199/.286/.342 with seven homers, a stolen base, 13 RBI and 20 runs scored through 220 plate appearances. The 23-year-old has seen time at first base, shortstop and third base in the last week, filling a utility role while still being a part of the regular lineup most of the time.

  • Orioles' Ryan Mountcastle: Homers in loss

Mountcastle went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Padres.

Mountcastle has hit safely in five straight games and 17 of his last 18 contests. Over that longer span, he's gone 26-for-64 (.406) with four homers, four doubles and 13 RBI. The first baseman is slashing .271/.315/.476 with 16 long balls, 55 RBI, 51 runs scored and three stolen bases through 90 contests overall. He continues to hold down a near-everyday role between first base and designated hitter.

  • Tigers' Spencer Torkelson: Homers two more times Wednesday

Torkelson went 2-for-5 with two solo home runs in Wednesday's 8-7 win over the Twins.

After going deep Tuesday night, Torkelson hit two more long balls during Wednesday afternoon's contest, bringing him to 21 home runs for the season. The 23-year-old slugger now has four multi-homer games this year, including two of them in the last week against Minnesota.

  • Luke Raley RF | SEA

Rays' Luke Raley: Legs out inside-the-park homer

Raley went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-1 victory over the Giants.

Raley's 17th home run of the year was certainly his most unusual -- he blasted a Ross Stripling offering 425 feet off the top of the right-field wall before it ricocheted away from the Giants outfielders, giving Raley plenty of time to cruise into home standing up. The homer was Raley's second in his last four games following a 1-for-18 slump over his previous six contests. Overall, his slash line is up to .257/.340/.517 with 49 runs scored, 43 RBI and 12 steals across 288 plate appearances this season.
