  • Jared Walsh 1B | CHW

Angels' Jared Walsh: Returns to majors with long ball

Walsh hit a solo home run in his only at-bat during a loss to the Tigers on Friday.

Walsh was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday and began Friday's contest on the bench. He was called on to pinch hit in the ninth inning and smoked a 435-foot solo homer to right-center field. The long ball was just the second in the majors this season for Walsh, who battled insomnia and migraines early in the campaign and has slashed .132/.253/.279 over 79 plate appearances.

  • Jose Abreu 1B | HOU

Astros' Jose Abreu: Slugs 15th homer

Abreu went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Royals.

The veteran first baseman took Taylor Clarke deep in the ninth inning, one of the few bright spots on the night for the Astros. Abreu has been productive since returning from a back issue in late August, slashing .254/.329/.540 over 17 games with five of his 15 homers and 22 of his 78 RBI on the season.

  • Tigers' Spencer Torkelson: Extends hitting streak

Torkelson went 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored and two RBI in Friday's win over the Angels.

Torkelson extended his hitting streak to six games, a span in which he's gone 9-for-27 with a home run and seven RBI. Overall this month, the youngster is batting a robust .397 with four home runs and 14 RBI across 13 contests. Torkelson is trending up as he nears the end of his second MLB campaign.

  • Spencer Steer 1B | CIN

Reds' Spencer Steer: Launches another homer

Steer went 1-for-3 with a walk, a home run and two RBI in Friday's 5-3 win over the Mets.

Steer homered for a second straight day and the fourth time in the last 11 games, upping his season total to 22. Cincinnati manager David Bell likes to take advantage of Steer's versatility and moves him around the lineup. Over the last six games, Steer made starts at first base, third base and right field; he also moved mid-game to left field and second base during that stretch. For the season, Steer has started 60 games at first base, 46 at third base, 34 in left field, 15 at second base, six at designated hitter and two in right field.

  • Cardinals' Paul Goldschmidt: Posts steal in loss

Goldschmidt went 1-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Phillies.

Goldschmidt had gone over a month since his last steal (Aug. 14). In that span, the first baseman hit a light .247 over 26 contests. He's up to 11 thefts in 13 attempts this year while slashing .271/.365/.448 with 24 home runs, 74 RBI and 83 runs scored over 142 games. He should continue to see regular playing time down the stretch, though it wouldn't be surprising to see the Cardinals rest the 36-year-old a bit more often since they are out of contention.

  • Kole Calhoun 1B | CLE

Guardians' Kole Calhoun: Pops homer Friday

Calhoun went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Friday's 12-3 win over the Rangers.

Calhoun was able to contribute the Guardians' last two runs in a win over the team he suited up for in 2022. He had a solid run of playing time in August, but he's started to falter in September, going 7-for-45 (.156) with two homers and five RBI over 13 contests this month. Overall, he's at a .230/.307/.393 slash line with five long balls, 20 RBI, 15 runs scored and five doubles through 33 contests. He should be a regular in the lineup versus right-handed pitchers, but with the Guardians' hitters at essentially full health, he may not have a chance at an everyday role down the stretch.

  • Josh Naylor 1B | SEA

Guardians' Josh Naylor: Collects four hits, drives in three

Naylor went 4-for-5 with one double, three RBI and one run scored in Friday's victory over the Rangers.

Naylor struck out in his first at-bat but was outstanding the rest of the night, and on the season he now has a .312 batting average with 91 RBI. Naylor is in the midst of a full-fledged breakout in his third big-league season as Friday marked the fourth time he has had four hits in a game and the 12th time he's recorded at least three RBI this season. He's just short of the number of at-bats necessary to qualify for the American League batting title, but currently ranks behind only Corey Seager and Yandy Diaz in that department.

  • Nolan Schanuel 1B | LAA

    Angels' Nolan Schanuel: Resting Friday

Schanuel is not in Friday's lineup against the Tigers, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Schanuel will hit the bench after starting three consecutive games. He recently recovered from a shoulder injury, so the team may take a cautious approach and give him extra time off across the final few weeks of the regular season. The Angels shuffled the lineup in Schanuel's absence, with the end result being Kyren Paris hitting leadoff and playing center field.

  • Dominic Smith 1B | ATL

Nationals' Dominic Smith: Idle against lefty

Smith isn't in the Nationals' lineup Friday against Milwaukee, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Smith will take a seat Friday against left-hander Wade Miley. Joey Meneses will fill in as Washington's first baseman while Carter Kieboom serves as the DH.

  • Triston Casas 1B | BOS

Red Sox's Triston Casas: Out with sore shoulder

Casas was scratched from the lineup Friday at Toronto due to right shoulder soreness, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Casas may have tweaked his shoulder at some point during Thursday's doubleheader against the Yankees, but the issue is not considered serious and he should be viewed as day-to-day leading into the remainder of Boston's weekend series versus the Blue Jays. Justin Turner is starting at first base Friday as Masataka Yoshida fills the DH role, while Ceddanne Rafaela enters the lineup in center field and hits leadoff.
