Rangers' Kole Calhoun: Out against southpaw

Calhoun is not in Friday's lineup against the Angels.

Calhoun heads to the bench with lefty Patrick Sandoval on the hill for the Halos. Elier Hernandez will start in left field and bat seventh.

  • Dominic Smith 1B | ATL

Mets' Dominic Smith: Nearing rehab assignment

Smith (ankle) could begin a rehab assignment during the Mets' current road trip that lasts through Wednesday, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.

It sounds like the best-case scenario would be Smith starting a rehab assignment in a couple days and then getting activated next weekend. He hit .194 with zero home runs in 58 games prior to getting injured.

  • Andrew Vaughn 1B | MIL

White Sox's Andrew Vaughn: Steps out of lineup

Vaughn is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Athletics.

Vaughn is 3-for-20 with a double, a walk, an RBI and two runs since the All-Star break and will take a seat Friday versus Oakland. Yasmani Grandal will rest his legs as the designated hitter while Reese McGuire works behind the plate.

  • Darick Hall 1B | PIT

Phillies' Darick Hall: Takes seat against left-hander

Hall isn't starting Friday against the Pirates.

Hall is getting a day off since southpaw Jose Quintana is on the mound for Pittsburgh. Kyle Schwarber will serve as the designated hitter.

  • Josh Naylor 1B | SEA

Guardians' Josh Naylor: Not in Friday's lineup

Naylor isn't starting Friday against the Rays.

Naylor started the last six games and hit .308 with a home run, three doubles, three runs, two RBI and a stolen base. Owen Miller is taking over at first base and batting cleanup.

  • Alex Kirilloff LF | MIN

Twins' Alex Kirilloff: Not starting Friday

Kirilloff is out of the lineup for Friday's game at San Diego.

Kirilloff is 0-for-8 with three strikeouts since the end of his nine-game hit streak earlier this week, and he'll head to the bench Friday with southpaw Blake Snell pitching for the Friars. Kyle Garlick will take over in left field for Minnesota.

  • Luke Raley RF | SEA

Rays' Luke Raley: Takes seat Friday

Raley isn't starting Friday against the Guardians, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Raley has gone 7-for-19 with a homer, two doubles, three RBI and two runs over the last six games but will get a day off Friday. Josh Lowe is shifting to right field while Roman Quinn starts in center.

  • Yuli Gurriel DH | SD

Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Swipes sixth bag

Gurriel went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base Thursday against Seattle.

Gurriel was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning and went on to steal second base before coming around to score. After swiping one base combined across the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Gurriel now has six steals this season without being caught. That's a nice uptick in value, as Gurriel has otherwise recorded only seven home runs with 27 RBI and 33 runs scored in 91 games on the campaign.

  • Cardinals' Paul Goldschmidt: Back from restricted list

Goldschmidt (personal) was reinstated from the restricted list by the Cardinals on Friday.

Goldschmidt was unable to travel to Canada for the Cardinals' two-game series against the Blue Jays earlier this week, but he'll now rejoin the team ahead of Friday's series opener versus the Nationals. The 34-year-old has homered in his last four games, going 8-for-18 with five long balls and 10 RBI.

  • Nate Lowe 1B | CIN

Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Homer and triple in win

Lowe went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a triple in Thursday's 2-0 win over the Angels.

Lowe went deep for the third time in eight games since the All-Star break, and this was also his fourth multi-hit effort in that span. His fourth-inning blast was all the Rangers needed to get the win. The first baseman is up to 15 homers, 43 RBI, 45 runs scored, a stolen base, two triples and 16 doubles while slashing .276/.324/.462 through 93 contests.
