Vaughn Grissom SS | BOS
Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Sitting after three straight starts
Grissom is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays.
Grissom had started each of the last three games at second base, going 4-for-11 with a walk, a double, two stolen bases, two RBI and one run. The Red Sox could rotate a number of players at second base down the stretch, including Ceddanne Rafaela. Though Rafaela made each of his last five starts in center field, he may end up seeing more time at the keystone at Grissom's expense now that Tyler O'Neill has been cleared to play the outfield Wednesday after recently being held out of the lineup or limited to designated-hitter duties due to a back issue. Rafaela will join Grissom on the bench Wednesday, however, as Enmanuel Valdez gets the nod at second base.

Adam Frazier 2B | KC
Royals' Adam Frazier: On bench against lefty
Frazier is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals.
The lefty-hitting Frazier will take a seat for the third game in a row while the Royals face a third consecutive left-handed starting pitcher (DJ Herz). Frazier still looks to have a hold on a strong-side platoon role in right field, but Tommy Pham will occupy the position Wednesday.

Zack Gelof 2B | ATH
Athletics' Zack Gelof: Scores game-winning run Tuesday
Gelof went 1-for-3 with an RBI sacrifice fly, a stolen base and a run in a win over the Rangers on Tuesday.
Gelof snapped a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning with his sacrifice fly, which plated Shea Langeliers. He eventually scored the game-winning run on Jacob Wilson's walk-off single in the penultimate night game for the Athletics at Oakland Coliseum. The eventful night was an extension of a productive all-around month for Gelof despite some persistent contact issues, as he's generated a .278 average, .715 OPS, eight extra-base hits, seven RBI, five steals and nine runs across 84 September plate appearances.

Jack Lopez 2B | LAA
Angels' Jack Lopez: Pops first big-league homer
Lopez went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the White Sox.
He took Prelander Berroa deep in the eighth inning, extending the Angels' lead to 2-0 before the team's bullpen fell apart. The long ball was the first of Lopez's career in 29 MLB games, and the 31-year-old journeyman has been on a nice little tear to close out the season, batting .417 (10-for-24) over his last nine games. He's settled into an everyday role at second base for the Halos, supplanting Brandon Drury.

Vaughn Grissom SS | BOS
Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Swipes second bag
Grissom went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Blue Jays.
The 23-year-old is getting a shot at regular playing time over the final week of the season, and Grissom took advantage of the opportunity Tuesday. In four appearances since his return to the majors, including three straight starts at second base, he's gone 4-for-12 with one run, two RBI and both his steals on the year. Grissom has had a tough 2024 campaign, but he could still head into spring training next year as the favorite to start at the keystone.

Jorge Polanco 2B | SEA
Mariners' Jorge Polanco: Four hits in Tuesday's loss
Polanco went 4-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Astros.
Polanco continued his recent surge at the plate -- he's 10-for-21 (.476) with four RBI and three extra-base hits over his last five games. Unfortunately for the Mariners, Polanco was often stranded on base as the bottom third of the order went hitless. The second baseman has had a career-worst season with a .214/.295/.359 slash line over 115 contests, though he's added 16 homers, 45 RBI, 43 runs scored, four stolen bases and 11 doubles while seeing regular playing time when healthy.

Echedry Vargas 2B | TEX
Rangers' Echedry Vargas: Power, speed in Carolina League
Vargas slashed .276/.321/.454 with 14 home runs and 29 steals in 97 games for Single-A Down East.
While the surface stats appear promising for the 19-year-old middle infielder, his 0.24 BB/K, 22.0 percent hard-hit rate and 25.5 percent soft-contact rate portend struggles in the upper levels. Vargas is an aggressive hitter who doesn't make consistent hard contact, so he projects to log low on-base percentages and potentially low batting averages. Even so, he could potentially log a 20/20 season or two if he finds his way into an everyday role. Vargas' projects to be a quality defender at second base or a passable defender at shortstop, and his most likely role is utility infielder who sometimes ascends to regular duty depending on injuries and performance.
