Pirates slugger Pedro Alvarez arrived at the ballpark Wednesday in a walking boot. He sprained his foot diving in vain for a ball Tuesday night.

Alvarez has three home runs in the last four games to give him 18 on the season.

Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez was removed from Tuesday's game with left foot discomfort, the team announced.

Alvarez went hitless in three at-bats before coming out of the game. He'll be re-evaluated by the team tomorrow.

Rays third baseman Evan Longoria has been playing through a sore right forearm for the last week, how told The Tampa Tribune.

Longoria is in the lineup Tuesday against the Orioles, but is serving as the designated hitter for the second straight game. He did not he expects to be back at third base for Wednesday's game.

Alvarez didn't wait long before he struck. In his first at-bat, Alvarez belted a 92 mph fastball out to center for a solo shot. He would also single later in the contest. Alvarez finished 2 for 4, with one run scored and one RBI. It was his 18th home run.

Nationals infielder Anthony Rendon clubbed his 17th home run Monday against the Phillies.

Rendon struck in the sixth inning. With the bases empty, Rendon took a 91 mph sinker from A.J. Burnett out to left for the solo shot. Rendon finished 1 for 4, with one run scored and one RBI. 

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is not planning on rehabbing with the team post-surgery, Comcast SportsNet Baltimore reports.

Machado will undergo surgery on his right knee Wednesday, then he'll report to the team's spring training complex in Sarasota after three weeks to continue rehab his instead. He is planning on being with the team in October for the playoffs and wants to have a "normal" spring training, according to the report.

Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado unleashed his 14th home run of the season Sunday against the Marlins.

Arenado took Brad Hand deep in the opening frame for a two-run shot. He finished 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBI in a 7-4 victory. He has 12 hits over his last 22 at-bats, including three doubles, a triple and two home runs.

Athletics third baseman Josh Donaldson underwent an MRI on his injured knee Sunday, which revealed no structural damage, the Bay Area News Group reports. He is expected to return to the lineup Monday against the Astros in Houston.

Donaldson suffered the injury in his last at-bat of Saturday's game. He wanted to play Sunday, but the team wanted him to undergo precautionary testing. Donaldson has hit .249/.335/.458 with 25 home runs and 84 RBI in 478 at-bats.

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said Sunday that the team has not closed the door on first baseman Pedro Alvarez returning to third base in 2015, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

The team would like to see Alvarez back at third base, but he'll have to do a better job defensively than he did this season in order to stick at the position. Otherwise, he may wind up manning first base on a regular basis. Alvarez has hit .233/.314/.403 with 17 home runs and 55 RBI in 387 at-bats.
