    Reds' Cam Collier: Improved conditioning

Collier reported to camp in much better shape after improving his diet in the offseason, Charlie's Chalkboard reports. "I went into the offseason a bit overweight," Collier said. "They told me at instructs make sure you come in next year in shape and can play over a lot of games. I cut out the fast food, the sweet stuff and the snacks. I ate good meals. It's night and day. It allows me to be more mobile. It allows me to move and stretch a lot more and get a lot more of my legs in my swing."

Collier is already one of the Reds' better hitting prospects and posted a .798 OPS at High-A last year as a 19-year-old, and the improved conditioning should help as he moves into the upper minors. The 2022 first-round pick is in big-league camp but is likely to begin the campaign at Double-A Chattanooga.

  • Brett Baty 3B | NYM

Mets' Brett Baty: Connects for first spring homer

Baty went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros.

The 25-year-old got the start at third base and hooked a Hayden Wesneski offering over the right-field fence in the third inning for his first long ball of the spring. Baty isn't going to unseat Mark Vientos at the hot corner, but he's getting a look all around the infield in camp, including at shortstop. If Baty demonstrates he can handle the defensive demands, he might take over the utility infielder job originally ticketed for Nick Madrigal (shoulder) on the Opening Day roster.

  • Cam Smith 3B | HOU

Astros' Cam Smith: Homers twice Tuesday

Smith cranked a two-run home run and a solo blast in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game versus the Mets.

Smith didn't start the game but homered in both of his plate appearances, taking Chris Devenski deep in the sixth inning and then sending one over the boards off Connor Overton in the eighth. The top prospect has reached base in all four plate appearances this spring, having drawn walks in his first two trips to the dish. Acquired from the Cubs in the Kyle Tucker trade, Smith has just 32 games of pro ball under his belt but could move quickly through the Astros' system.

  • Tyler Freeman 3B | COL

Guardians' Tyler Freeman: Next up at second base

Freeman started at second base and went 1-for-2 with two RBI in Tuesday's Cactus League game against Milwaukee.

Freeman was the fourth different player to start at second base for the Guardians. The competition will continue to rage through the Cactus League. Thus far, Gabriel Arias, Juan Brito, Angel Martinez and now Freeman have gotten looks. Daniel Schneemann is expected to get a turn as well. The eventual winner will be keeping the spot warm for Travis Bazzana, last year's No. 1 overall pick who homered and walked twice as the backup to Freeman on Tuesday.

  • Red Sox's Rafael Devers: Slated for game action next week

The Red Sox are aiming for Devers (shoulder) to play his first spring game March 5, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

"We are preparing him to play third base," manager Alex Cora said. "That's part of the progression. He'll DH here and there. I don't know if it March [5], he'll play third, but we'll get him reps. I think people are making decisions already, and we haven't made decisions." Cora said Alex Bregman will play second base during spring training. Devers has been doing separate infield and cage work away from other Red Sox players as he continues to build up strength following last year's shoulder injuries.

  • Eguy Rosario 3B | SD

Padres' Eguy Rosario: Making push for roster spot

Rosario seems to "have a leg up" on a bench spot on San Diego's Opening Day roster, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Rosario has gotten off to a great start this spring, going 3-for-8 with a home run and a double. Additionally, he's played three different positions -- second base, third base and left field. The latter position is a new one for Rosario, and if he handles it well it could further help his bid for a roster spot after the team lost Jurickson Profar, who played left field last year, to free agency during the offseason. Rosario posted an .814 OPS over a small sample size (57 plate appearances) last season, but he did almost all of his damage against southpaws, posting a .368 OPS against right-handers. To that end, he mentioned specifically working on hitting righties in the Dominican League this winter, and all three of his hits so far this spring have come against right-handed pitchers.

  • Nick Madrigal 3B | LAA

Mets' Nick Madrigal: Moved to 60-day IL

Madrigal (shoulder) was placed on the 60-day injured list Monday.

It was reported earlier in the day that Madrigal is expected to miss a significant period of time recovering from a fractured left shoulder, so this transaction is purely procedural. The move opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for Alexander Canario, who was acquired from the Cubs in exchange for cash considerations Monday.

  • Nick Madrigal 3B | LAA

Mets' Nick Madrigal: Diagnosed with fractured shoulder

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Monday that Madrigal will be "out for a long time" after being diagnosed with a fractured left shoulder, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Madrigal had already been diagnosed with a shoulder dislocation, and further testing has revealed additional damage. There's no clear timeline yet for how long he might be sidelined, but it will likely be several months. With Madrigal out, Luisangel Acuna could have a better chance to make the Mets' Opening Day roster.

  • Alex Bregman 3B | CHC

Red Sox's Alex Bregman: Boffo debut Sunday

Bregman started at third base and went 3-for-3 with a home run, double and two RBI in Sunday's spring game against the Blue Jays.

Bregman's debut in a Boston uniform could not have gone any better. Batting second, he singled in his first at-bat, laced a two-run home run in the second inning, then had a double off the replica Green Monster at JetBlue park. The 30-year-old told Christopher Smith of Mass Live following the game that he worked on his swing mechanics during the offseason. After posting a career-low .768 OPS in 2024, Bregman studied video and noticed his hands were launching from further back over the last few seasons, so he worked to bring his hands inside the frame of his body.

  • Jose Miranda 3B | MIN

Twins' Jose Miranda: Could be primary DH

Miranda will likely be the primary DH For the Twins this season but should also get playing time at first base and third base, Bobby Nightengale of the Minnesota Star Tribune reports. He started at first base in his spring debut Sunday and went 1-for-2.

Miranda should get almost everyday playing time between the three positions as the Twins are likely to rotate players to give them off days. He looks healthy after he struggled the final six weeks last season, hitting .202 with a .491 OPS in his last 30 games, in part due to a back injury that required an IL stint.
