Padres' Austin Nola: Not starting Friday

Nola isn't in the Padres' lineup Friday against Milwaukee.

Nola is currently in the middle of an 0-for-18 streak at the plate, so the Padres will start Luis Campusano in his place behind the dish Friday against Eric Lauer.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Out of lineup again Friday

Alvarez is not in the starting lineup Friday at Oakland.

Alvarez has started just two of a possible six games since his promotion from Triple-A Syracuse last week. Tomas Nido is catching and batting ninth for the Mets on Friday night against the Athletics. Daniel Vogelbach is serving as the designated hitter and hitting sixth.

  • Pirates' Tyler Heineman: Optioned to Triple-A level

Heineman was optioned Friday to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Heineman gets the boot with fellow catcher Austin Hedges returning from the 7-day concussion injured list. Jason Delay remains up as the Pirates' other option at catcher.

  • Pirates' Austin Hedges: Activated off concussion IL

Hedges was activated Friday from the 7-day concussion injured list.

Hedges is set to return to the Pirates on Friday in St. Louis after missing 10 days of action with a concussion. Tyler Heineman has been optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move. Jason Delay will stay up to share time behind the plate with Hedges.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Swipes bag

Contreras went 0-for-2 with two walks and a stolen base in Thursday's 5-0 loss to the Pirates.

Contreras is 0-for-15 over his last five games, though he has managed four walks in that span. He was on the front of an unlikely double-steal with Nolan Gorman in the fourth inning of Thursday's game. Contreras has shown some solid speed for a catcher, though he's never stolen more than five bases in a season. He's off to a sluggish start in 2023 with a .171/.261/.195 slash line, two RBI, four runs scored, one double and no home runs through 12 contests.

  • Padres' Luis Campusano: Not in lineup Thursday

Campusano is not in the lineup Thursday against the Brewers.

Campusano has out-hit Austin Nola in the early going and should be able to carve out more playing time if that continues, but Nola is starting at catcher and batting ninth for the Padres in this one. Campusano is expected to catch Friday and Sunday versus Milwaukee.

Padres' Austin Nola: Starting at catcher Thursday

Nola is starting at catcher Thursday against the Brewers.

There has been growing chatter about Luis Campusano getting more time behind the plate for the Padres, but Nola is in there again for Thursday night's series opener versus Milwaukee. Nola, 33, is just 3-for-29 (.103) with zero extra-base hits through nine starts at catcher this season.

  • Giants' Roberto Perez: Has season-ending shoulder surgery

Perez underwent season-ending surgery Wednesday to repair his right rotator cuff, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports.

Perez suffered a severe strain of his right rotator cuff in just his second week with the Giants after starting behind the plate in five of their first seven games. He'll be a free agent this winter. Joey Bart now has another opportunity to establish himself as the immediate and long-term answer at catcher in San Francisco, though Rule 5 pick Blake Sabol has also been a factor in the early going. Gary Sanchez is currently getting built up at Triple-A Sacramento after recently joining the organization on a minor-league deal.

  • Brian Serven C | ATH

Rockies' Brian Serven: Draws rare start

Serven went 1-for-2 Wednesday against the Cardinals.

Serven was expected to be in a fairly even split for playing time behind the plate with Elias Diaz this season, but he made just his third start Wednesday. He led off the sixth inning with a single but was replaced by a pinch hitter one frame later. Serven has three hits in seven at-bats for the campaign but is clearly viewed as just the backup catcher in Colorado.

  • Blake Sabol C | BOS

Giants' Blake Sabol: Notches steal in win

Sabol went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 5-0 win over the Dodgers.

The steal was Sabol's first at the big-league level. He stole a combined 10 bases between the Double-A and Triple-A circuits last season, so there's at least modest speed in his profile. The 25-year-old catcher/outfielder is slashing .194/.265/.290 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored through 34 plate appearances. With prospect Heliot Ramos in the majors, Sabol will likely serve as a backup to Joey Bart rather than a starter in left field.
