Dodgers' Will Smith: Not expected back before Friday

Smith (concussion) is not expected to return during the Dodgers' current road trip, which runs through Thursday, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.

Smith has missed 10 days while recovering from a concussion and is expected to miss at least five more. He's reportedly making progress, but it will be Austin Barnes and Austin Wynns who remain the Dodgers' catchers for the conclusion of the weekend series against the Cubs as well as the upcoming series against the Pirates.

  • Keibert Ruiz C | WAS

    Nationals' Keibert Ruiz: Resting Saturday

Ruiz will sit Saturday against the Twins.

Ruiz has handled a very heavy workload behind the plate this season, starting 17 of the team's first 19 games. Riley Adams will get the nod in Game 20.

  • Yan Gomes C | CHC

Cubs' Yan Gomes: Not in starting nine

Gomes will sit Saturday against the Dodgers, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

Gomes will be on the bench against Dustin May, meaning he's now sat against the last four righties the Cubs have faced. He was starting against righties early in the year, but it's possible he could continue to find himself primarily starting against southpaws going forward. Gomes' .671 OPS in 12 games isn't particularly good, though it's better than Saturday's catcher Tucker Barnhart's .486 OPS.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Leads team in RBI

Moreno went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored in Friday's 9-0 win over San Diego.

Moreno delivers with runners in scoring position. The catcher is 7-for-17 with a 1.036 OPS when given an opportunity to plate runners. This week alone, he's driven in seven runs and vaulted to the team lead with 12 RBI over 16 games while batting in the lower third of the order.

  • Tomas Nido C | DET

Mets' Tomas Nido: Sitting against Giants

Nido is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Giants, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Nido will get the night off after going 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts against the Giants on Thursday to drop his average to .105. Francisco Alvarez is hitting eighth and handling backstop duties against Anthony DeSclafani.

  • Austin Nola C | COL

Padres' Austin Nola: Sitting out Friday

Nola is not in the lineup Friday against the Diamondbacks.

Brett Sullivan will catch and bat ninth versus the Diamondbacks and right-hander Zac Gallen. Nola has slashed just .152/.250/.196 through his first 52 plate appearances this season with the Padres.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Begins baseball activities

D'Arnaud (concussion) hit in the batting cage Friday, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

D'Arnaud is back to doing baseball activities 11 days after being placed on the 7-day concussion injured list. If all goes well, the 34-year-old could feasibly return to Atlanta's active roster sometime early next week. He was off to an 11-for-33 start (.333) prior to the injury and had been starting pretty much every day between DH and catcher.

  • Pirates' Endy Rodriguez: Placed on minor-league IL

Rodriguez (forearm) was placed on the 7-day injured list Friday at Triple-A Indianapolis, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com reports.

Rodriguez connected for his third home run of the season Thursday against Memphis, but he later departed that game after injuring his right arm on a throw. There's no exact diagnosis or return date yet for the highly touted 22-year-old catcher. He's scheduled to visit with the Pirates' medical staff this weekend.

  • Marlins' Jacob Stallings: Not starting Friday

Stallings isn't starting Friday against the Guardians, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Stallings has recorded a hit in each of his last two games, but still holds just a .515 OPS on the year. Nick Fortes will start behind the dish in his place and bat eighth.

  • Keibert Ruiz C | WAS

Nationals' Keibert Ruiz: Moves up to two spot

Ruiz has been moved up to the two spot in the Nationals' lineup for Friday's game against the Twins, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Ruiz and Dominic Smith are flip-flopping lineup spots, with Smith dropping down to sixth. The move seems less about what Ruiz (.689 OPS) has done and more about Smith's (.550 OPS) struggles as the Nats look for a spark.
