  • Will Smith C | LAD

Dodgers' Will Smith: Receives maintenance day

Smith is out of the lineup for Sunday's game in Miami, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Austin Barnes will check in behind the dish while Smith rests after catching in both of the Dodgers' last two games. Smith has remained one of baseball's most productive offensive catchers thus far in August, batting .304 on the month with three home runs, 20 RBI, 14 runs and a stolen base in 20 games.

  • Cardinals' Andrew Knizner: Homers in Saturday's win

    Knizner went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run and a hit-by-pitch in Saturday's 6-5 win over Atlanta.

Knizner has hit safely in five straight games, going 7-for-16 (.438) with a homer, three RBI, eight runs scored and a pair of doubles in that short but productive stretch. He accounted for the Cardinals' first two runs in this contest. The catcher has alternated starts with Yadier Molina over the last six games, which suggests Knizner may be forcing his way into a timeshare. He has a .231/.329/.302 slash line with two homers, 22 RBI, 23 runs scored and eight doubles through 229 plate appearances this year.

  • Omar Narvaez C | HOU

Brewers' Omar Narvaez: Remains on bench

Narvaez isn't in the lineup Saturday against the Cubs.

Narvaez is on the bench for a third consecutive game since left-hander Drew Smyly is starting for the Cubs. Victor Caratini is starting behind the plate and batting seventh.

  • James McCann C | ARI

Mets' James McCann: Out of lineup

McCann will not start Saturday's game against the Rockies.

McCann has now been on the bench for three of the last four games. With his .193/.246/.277 slash line, it's hard to argue he deserves more playing time. Tomas Nido will start behind the plate.

  • Alex Jackson C | MIN

Brewers' Alex Jackson: Placed on 60-day IL

Jackson was placed on the 60-day injured list with left wrist inflammation Saturday.

Jackson hasn't played at Triple-A Nashville since Aug. 11, and he'll be unavailable for the remainder of the minor-league season after landing on the 60-day IL. The 26-year-old slashed .225/.319/.382 with two home runs, a triple, eight doubles, 18 RBI, nine runs and a stolen base over 31 games at Nashville this year.

  • Elias Diaz C | KC

Rockies' Elias Diaz: Drives in three

Diaz went 1-for-4 with a double and three RBI on Friday against the Mets.

Diaz delivered a bases-clearing double in the eighth inning to tally all three of his RBI. It was Diaz's second start since returning from the injured list, and he has six RBI with a home run and two doubles in that span. He should continue to split reps with Brian Serven behind the dish. Diaz now has a .235/.297/.390 line across 290 plate appearances for the season.

  • Braves' William Contreras: Strong showing at plate

Contreras went 4-for-5 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 11-4 win over the Cardinals.

The middle third of Atlanta's lineup combined to go 9-for-14, with Contreras playing a key role in the offensive eruption. The 24-year-old's biggest moment was a three-run double in the sixth inning that put his squad up 5-1. He's collected at least one hit in 12 of his last 13 games, batting .339 (19-for-56) with four extra-base hits in that span. For the season, Contreras has posted a .275/.349/.530 slash line with 17 home runs, 37 RBI, 39 runs scored, two stolen bases and 10 doubles through 275 plate appearances.

  • Mets' Michael Perez: Sent back to Syracuse

Perez was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Perez had been with the team since mid-August, going 2-for-14 at the plate in six games. The Mets will go with the usual two catchers (James McCann and Tomas Nido) for now, clearing space for reliever Tommy Hunter (back) to return from the injured list.

  • Pirates' Tyler Heineman: Day off Friday

Heineman isn't starting Friday against the Phillies.

Heineman has alternated starts behind the dish with Jason Delay recently and will head to the bench after he went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk Wednesday against Atlanta. Delay is starting at catcher and batting ninth.

  • Padres' Luis Campusano: Recalled Friday

Campusano was recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Friday.

Campusano has been in the minors since the start of May but will rejoin the active roster to provide depth behind primary catcher Austin Nola after Jorge Alfaro (knee) was placed on the 10-day injured list. Campusano hit .083 with a run, an RBI and two strikeouts over four big-league games earlier in the year.
