  • Will Smith C | LAD

    Dodgers' Will Smith: Resting Saturday

Smith isn't in the Dodgers' lineup for Saturday's game against the Tigers, Kirsten Watson of Spectrum SportsNet LA reports.

Smith has struck out six times in eight at-bats over his last two games, and the Dodgers will now give him a day off to regroup Saturday while Austin Barnes starts at catcher.

  • Padres' Brett Sullivan: Optioned to Triple-A

The Padres optioned Sullivan to Triple-A El Paso on Friday.

Sullivan is the odd man out for San Diego following the return of Xander Bogaerts (shoulder), who was reinstated from the IL on Friday. Sullivan was rarely able to see the field while behind Luis Campusano and Kyle Higashioka on the depth chart at catcher, appearing in just four games since being recalled from the minors June 22. He'll return to being organizational depth at Triple-A.

  • Sean Murphy C | ATL

    Braves' Sean Murphy: Sitting Friday

Murphy is not in the starting lineup for Friday's series opener against the Padres.

Murphy started three of four games during a series against the Diamondbacks this week, going 3-for-11 with one walk, one home run and three RBI. He'll begin Friday's contest in the dugout while Travis d'Arnaud starts behind the plate and bats eighth against Padres knuckleballer Matt Waldron.

  • Tomas Nido C | CHC

Cubs' Tomas Nido: Not starting Friday

Nido is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Cubs.

Nido will yield to Miguel Amaya behind the plate for the third time in five games. Nido is 4-for-19 (.211) with three runs scored and two RBI during July.

  • Ivan Herrera C | STL

Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Activated, sent to Triple-A

The Cardinals activated Herrera (back) from the 10-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Memphis.

Herrera has been shelved since June 22 due to soreness in his lower back, and although he's now healthy, the 24-year-old won't rejoin the big-league roster. Pedro Pages will handle backup catching duties behind Willson Contreras in St. Louis.

  • Phillies' Garrett Stubbs: Won't face lefty

Stubbs is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Athletics.

As per usual, Stubbs will yield to Rafael Marchan behind the dish with a lefty pitcher on the mound in Hogan Harris. Stubbs is slashing .194/.259/.243 across 112 plate appearances this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Logs hit in return

Moreno started at catcher and went 1-for-3 with a walk in Thursday's 1-0 win over Atlanta.

Moreno was back in the lineup after being scratched from Wednesday's game due to back tightness. His biggest contribution was guiding four pitchers to an impressive shutout win, which got the Diamondbacks back to .500 in the standings.

  • Reds' Tyler Stephenson: Keeps mashing

Stephenson went 2-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI in Thursday's 8-1 win over the Rockies.

Stephenson's three-run shot in the third inning was all the Reds needed, but he added another homer -- a two-run blast -- in the seventh. It was quite a series for the catcher, who mashed four home runs and drove in eight over the three-game set. The 27-year-old backstop is up to 10 home runs in 76 games, putting him on pace to wipe out the career-high 13 he swatted in 2023.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Back in action

Moreno is starting behind the plate and batting second Thursday versus Atlanta after being scratched with lower-back tightness Wednesday.

Moreno is set to make his eighth start of the season as the second batter in the order. The catcher was said to be available off the bench Wednesday despite the back issue, but he did not end up seeing any action.

  • Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Delivers clutch double

Grandal went 1-for-4 with an RBI double during Thursday's 1-0 win over the Brewers.

Grandal broke the stalemate in the seventh inning, tagging Aaron Civale for a one-out double to score Jack Suwinski from first base. Grandal started Thursday's contest behind the dish after yielding to Joey Bart in each of the Pirates' previous three games. In 132 plate appearances, Grandal is slashing .184/.214/.304 with 22 strikeouts and only five walks.
