Nationals' Yan Gomes: Takes seat Monday

Gomes is not in the lineup Monday against the White Sox.

Gomes has started three of the past four games behind the dish, going 3-for-10 during those contests. Kurt Suzuki is starting at catcher and hitting eighth in this one.

  • Padres' Austin Hedges: Not playing Sunday

Hedges (ankle) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals.

Hedges' sprained ankle prevented him from playing in Saturday's 4-1 loss, but the Padres' decision not to call up another catcher from the minor-league ranks suggests the injury isn't viewed as a major concern at this time. Austin Allen will receive a second straight turn behind the plate.

  • Reds' Tucker Barnhart: Takes seat in series finale

Barnhart is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Barnhart will retreat to the bench after going 3-for-15 while starting five of the Reds' past six games behind the dish. Curt Casali will handle catching duties in the series finale.

  • Padres' Austin Hedges: Out with sprained ankle

Hedges was scratched from Saturday's lineup versus the Nationals with a sprained left ankle, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Hedges was scratched from Saturday's game just minutes before first pitch, pressing Austin Allen in starting duty behind the plate. Hedges is considered day-to-day, but it would make sense for him to sit out Sunday's series finale with a scheduled off day to follow Monday.

  • Padres' Austin Hedges: Late scratch Saturday

Hedges won't start Saturday's game against the Nationals for an undisclosed reason, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Hedges was penciled in to catch and bat eighth Saturday before being scratched. Austin Allen will enter the lineup in his stead.

Nationals' Yan Gomes: Day off Saturday

Gomes is out of the lineup for Saturday's game at San Diego.

Gomes started the first two games versus the Padres and went 2-for-6 with one run scored and one RBI. Kurt Suzuki will take over behind the dish and bat seventh.

  • Dodgers' Austin Barnes: Day off Saturday

Barnes will sit Saturday against the Giants, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.

Barnes started in his first game back from a groin injury Friday but won't be asked to catch two games in a row right away. Russell Martin gets the nod in his absence.

  • Cubs' Victor Caratini: Collects two hits in win

Caratini went 2-for-2 with a walk, a double and an RBI in Friday's 3-1 win over the Cardinals.

Picking up a start at catcher, Caratini continued to produce at the plate. The 25-year-old has only recorded 40 at-bats so far this season, but he's slashing a strong .350/.469/.550 in his limited appearances behind regular catcher Willson Contreras.

  • Cubs' Willson Contreras: Not starting Friday

Contreras is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Cardinals.

Contreras will receive Friday off after starting five of the last six games and going 4-for-17 with one double and one home run in that stretch. Victor Caratini will start behind the plate and bat sixth versus Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas.

Dodgers' Will Smith: Headed back to Triple-A

Smith has been optioned back to Triple-A Oklahoma City, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

Smith was impressive in his first action at the big-league level, going 6-for-21 with a pair of homers and a double, but with Austin Barnes (groin) activated from the 10-day injured list Thursday, the Dodgers have sent Smith back to Oklahoma City. The young backstop showcased some of the potential at the dish that has made him such an enticing prospect, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see him called back up at some point this season.
