  • Nick Fortes C | TB

Marlins' Nick Fortes: Up with big-league club

Fortes was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Fortes finished 2021 in the majors but was unable to earn a spot on Miami's Opening Day roster this season. The 25-year-old has a .723 OPS over 120 plate appearances for Jacksonville this year and should operate as the No. 2 catcher behind starter Jacob Stallings.

  • Ben Rortvedt C | NYM

    Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: Sheds crutches

Rortvedt (knee) was walking normally without crutches Friday, Randy Miller of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

Rortvedt underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee May 18, and it was encouraging to see him regain his mobility less than two weeks after the procedure. The catcher is hopeful that he'll be able to return to game action in 4-to-6 weeks, which puts him in line with his initial recovery timetable of mid-to-late July.

  • Phillies' J.T. Realmuto: Gets Friday off

Realmuto will sit Friday against the Mets, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.

Realmuto has handled a very heavy workload behind the plate as usual this season. His 37 starts at catcher lead the league, with only Sean Murphy sitting within three starts of that mark. Even Realmuto can't start every day, however, so he'll rest his legs Friday while Garrett Stubbs catches for Bailey Falter.

  • Jose Trevino C | CIN

Yankees' Jose Trevino: Takes seat Friday

Trevino isn't starting Friday against the Rays.

Trevino went 1-for-4 in Thursday's series opener against Tampa Bay, and he'll be out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games. Kyle Higashioka will start behind the dish and bat eighth.

  • Joey Bart C | ATL

Giants' Joey Bart: Not starting Friday

Bart will sit Friday against the Reds, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

Bart hits the bench for the second time in three games. He hasn't done much at the plate this season, hitting .165/.305/.329 while striking out 45.3 percent of the time. Michael Papierski will start at catcher.

  • Sean Murphy C | ATL

Athletics' Sean Murphy: Extends hitting streak in loss

Murphy went 1-for-4 with a double in a loss to the Rangers on Thursday.

Murphy's double off Martin Perez extended the backstop's hitting streak to seven games, continuing one of his most productive stretches of the season. The 27-year-old is hitting a solid .286 (8-for-28) over that sample, but only two of his hits have gone for extra bases and he hasn't left the yard since April 29.

  • Red Sox's Kevin Plawecki: Piles on against Pale Hose

Plawecki went 1-for-1 with a two-run home run in Thursday's 16-7 win over the White Sox.

The Red Sox were already up 14-7 when Plawecki, who entered the game an inning earlier, piled on with his first home run of the season. He hasn't had the kind of success he experienced during his first two seasons with Boston, which was due to unsustainable BABIPs, but the Red Sox value Plawecki's work with the staff and will live with whatever value he provides with bat in hand.

  • Cubs' Willson Contreras: Hits sixth home run

Contreras went 1-for-2 with a walk and a solo home run in Thursday's loss to the Reds.

The Cubs lost 20-5, and Contreras was replaced by P.J. Higgins in the eighth inning of the blowout, but he was still able to do a little damage. The Chicago backstop is up to six home runs on the season, with half of those coming in his past 12 games. Contreras also has a solid .869 OPS, as he's been a good fantasy contributor despite some of Chicago's struggles as a team.

  • Ivan Herrera DH | STL

Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Sent to Triple-A

Herrera was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Thursday.

Herrera received his first taste of the big leagues this week with Yadier Molina (personal) on the bereavement list, though he didn't actually make his MLB debut. Molina is back on the active roster Thursday, prompting Herrera's return to Triple-A.

  • Cardinals' Andrew Knizner: Returns to backup role

Knizner is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against Milwaukee, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Knizner started the past three games with Yadier Molina (personal) on the bereavement list, but Molina is back with the team for Thursday's contest. Knizner has a solid .269/.364/.358 slash line for a backup catcher and should continue to see semi-regular playing time behind Molina.
