Alvarez will require surgery after being diagnosed with a torn UCL in his left thumb, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Alvarez suffered the injury during Friday's game versus the Dodgers when he planted his left hand into the ground after stumbling on his turn toward second base. The catcher reportedly told teammates that he expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks, but a clearer timetable for his return could be available following the surgery. With Alvarez on the shelf, Omar Narvaez and Tomas Nido will handle the catching duties for the Mets.

Fortes isn't in the Marlins' lineup for the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cubs.

Fortes went 0-for-2 with a strikeout during the first game of Saturday's activities, and he'll get a breather to conclude the day. Jhonny Pereda will start behind the plate instead and bat ninth.

Jansen isn't in the Blue Jays' lineup for Saturday's game against the Padres.

Jansen will get a day off Saturday after going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored during Friday's series opener. Alejandro Kirk will take over behind the plate and bat sixth.

Naylor isn't in the Guardians' lineup for Saturday's game against Oakland.

The lefty-hitting Naylor will take a seat Saturday as the A's send left-hander Alex Wood to the mound. Austin Hedges will start behind the plate instead and bat eighth.

The Rangers recalled Huff from Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday.

With Jonah Heim (bereavement) away from the team, Huff will join the big-league roster to give the Rangers security behind the dish. The 26-year-old is slashing .321/.415/.607 across 65 plate appearances in the minors and will likely return to Round Rock once Heim returns.

The Rangers placed Heim on the bereavement list Saturday.

Heim will step away from the team for at least three days as he tends to more important matters. Sam Huff will come up from Triple-A Round Rock to give Texas extra depth at catcher while Heim is out.

Maldonado isn't in the White Sox's lineup for Saturday's game against the Phillies.

Maldonado is just 2-for-35 through 14 games, and he'll sit down as the White Sox look to get more production from the catcher position. Korey Lee will start at catcher and bat eighth.

Smith is not in the Dodgers' lineup Saturday against the Mets.

Smith will get a breather after starting in the series opener Friday, when he went 2-for-4 with a double, one run and one walk. Austin Barnes will start behind the plate and bat ninth against Mets right-hander Jose Butto.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza revealed Saturday that Alvarez is undergoing additional testing on his left thumb, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Alvarez was diagnosed with a left thumb sprain after undergoing an MRI following Friday's game against the Dodgers. The initial scan didn't reveal any ligament tear or break, but there is concern that there is more to the sprain, and Mendoza noted that Alvarez is expected to miss more than 10 days with the injury. While Alvarez continues to be evaluated, Omar Narvaez will serve as the Mets' top catcher while Tomas Nido fills in as the backup.

Davis is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Red Sox.

Davis started at catcher in each of the Pirates' last four games, going 2-for-12 over that span. He was a late addition to the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets after Joey Bart (head) was scratched. Bart will draw back in behind the plate Saturday while batting fifth against Boston right-hander Kutter Crawford.
