  • Jonah Heim C | ATH

Rangers' Jonah Heim: Makes early exit

Heim was removed early from Wednesday's game against the Astros, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Heim appeared to tweak something on a swing during the fourth inning. He'll presumably undergo imaging, and the Rangers should provide an update on his status in the near future. Until then, he should be considered day-to-day.

  • Yan Gomes C | CHC

    Cubs' Yan Gomes: Resting Wednesday

Gomes is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox.

Gomes will head to the bench for the series finale after he started at catcher or designated hitter in each of the past five games. Tucker Barnhart will check in for Gomes behind the dish and will bat ninth.

  • Yainer Diaz C | HOU

Astros' Yainer Diaz: Heads to bench in Alvarez's return

Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rangers.

Diaz had started each of the last three games -- with the last two coming as a designated hitter -- but he'll cede his spot in the lineup to Yordan Alvarez (oblique), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday. Unless the Astros are willing to pull the plug on the struggling Martin Maldonado as their primary catcher, Diaz will likely be limited to a part-time role moving forward after he had been a near-everyday player for Houston since the beginning of June.

  • White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Sits after eight straight starts

Grandal is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.

Grandal will get a breather after he had started each of the last eight games at either designated hitter, first base or catcher. Now that the White Sox have all of their key position players healthy, Grandal's opportunities at DH and first base will likely become more scarce moving forward, though he should continue to play ahead of Seby Zavala at catcher.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Back catching Wednesday

Alvarez (hand) is starting at catcher and batting eighth Wednesday versus the Yankees.

Alvarez was removed from Tuesday's game after taking a pitch off his right hand, but X-rays came back negative and he's good to go for Wednesday's series finale against the Yanks. The 21-year-old catcher holds a strong .792 OPS with 19 home runs and 41 RBI through 260 major-league plate appearances this season.

  • Carlos Perez C | HOU

Athletics' Carlos Perez: Begins swing progression

Perez (thumb) has begun a swing progression after recently being medically cleared for such activity, the team's official site reports.

Perez's progress from a left thumb fracture remains somewhat deliberate, but this report is certainly encouraging. The veteran appears to still be more than a week from returning when factoring in a likely rehab assignment, and it's almost certain fellow backstop Manny Pina (wrist) will beat him back from the injured list considering the latter has already played in two minor-league games.

  • Dodgers' Austin Barnes: Picks up start for day game

Barnes will start at catcher and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

With top backstop Will Smith resting for the day game after the night game, Barnes will be getting a turn behind the plate. Barnes will be making just his sixth appearance of July after going 2-for-17 with four strikeouts over his prior five games this month.

  • Will Smith C | LAD

Dodgers' Will Smith: Taking seat Wednesday

Smith is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Blue Jays, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

The Dodgers and Blue Jays are playing a day game after a night game, so Smith appears to be receiving a breather. Austin Barnes will do the catching for Tony Gonsolin.

  • Danny Jansen C | TEX

Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Back after two-game absence

Jansen (forearm) will start at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Dodgers.

Jansen missed the Blue Jays' last two games due to a left forearm contusion, but he's shown enough improvement to handle his usual duties behind the plate in the series finale. Alejandro Kirk will head to the bench after catching Monday and Tuesday.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Sitting out Wednesday

Contreras is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Diamondbacks.

Contreras returned to action Tuesday after missing two games with a hip issue, but he'll take a seat Wednesday for the day game after a night game. Andrew Knizner will catch for starting pitcher Jack Flaherty.
