Angels' Shohei Ohtani: Bright spot in loss

Ohtani went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, a triple and three total RBI in Saturday's 10-5 loss to the Dodgers.

Not only did Ohtani extend his major-league lead in homers with his 32nd of the year, he also took sole possession of first place in triples with his sixth three-bagger. He had just two hits over his first six games in July, though he's been dealing with various finger issues over the last week-plus that have mostly affected his pitching. As a batter, the two-way star concludes the first half with a stellar .302/.387/.663 slash line, 71 RBI, 63 runs scored and 11 stolen bases through 89 games.

  • Mike Ford DH | MIN

Mariners' Mike Ford: Heads to bench

Ford will sit Saturday against Houston.

Ford hits the bench after starting seven straight contests, a stretch in which he hit .458 with a pair of homers. Teoscar Hernandez will rest his legs in Ford's usual designated hitter spot Saturday, with Dylan Moore taking Hernandez's place in right field.

Mariners' Mike Ford: Big game in win

Ford went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, two walks, four RBI and three runs scored in Friday's 10-1 win over the Astros.

Ford plated two runs with a double in the fourth inning and tacked on a solo shot in the ninth. It's the second time in the last four games he's racked up multiple extra-base hits. The 31-year-old is batting .282 with eight homers, 17 RBI, 15 runs scored and three doubles over 86 plate appearances, and his strong hitting in July is helping him hold down the designated hitter spot versus right-handed pitchers.

  • Yordan Alvarez DH | HOU

Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Takes on-field batting practice

Alvarez (oblique) took on-field batting practice Friday in Houston, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

The rehabbing slugger will next advance to simulated at-bats this Sunday as he completes his recovery from the right oblique strain that sent him to the injured list June 8. Alvarez seems likely to return to the Astros lineup shortly after the All-Star break.

  • Justin Turner 1B | CHC

Red Sox's Justin Turner: Could play second base

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Turner could play second base, MLB.com reports.

Cora indicated he could deploy some creative alignments with the return of Yu Chang (wrist), who will serve as the team's primary shortstop when activated this weekend. Having Turner play second base would maximize the team's offense by having Turner, Adam Duvall and Jarren Duran in the order. Turner currently rides a six-game hit streak, going 11-for-24 with two home runs, nine RBI and seven runs scored during that stretch.

  • Eloy Jimenez DH | TB

White Sox's Eloy Jimenez: Swats two-run homer

Jimenez went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in a loss to the Blue Jays in Game 2 of a doubleheader Thursday.

Jimenez went 0-for-4 in the matinee and 1-for-8 in the twin bill overall, but his lone hit was a two-run shot in the third inning of Game 2. It was the third homer in the past eight games for Jimenez, and he's batted .333 with 10 RBI over that stretch. The 26-year-old is up to 12 homers and 40 RBI over 239 plate appearances on the season.

  • Justin Turner 1B | CHC

Red Sox's Justin Turner: Plates two runs in win

Turner went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 4-2 win over Texas.

The two times Turner came up with runners in scoring position, he drove them in with singles. He has a five-game streak with at least one RBI, having gone 9-for-20 with two home runs, eight RBI and six runs scored during that stretch. His 49 RBI ranks second on the team behind Rafael Devers (66). The 38-year-old Turner has been clutch all season for Boston, posting a .350 average and .965 OPS with RISP.

  • Shohei Ohtani DH | LAD

Angels' Shohei Ohtani: In Wednesday's lineup at DH

Ohtani (finger) is in the Angels' lineup Wednesday in San Diego, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Ohtani had to be removed from Tuesday's start on the mound because of a blister on his right middle finger, but it won't cost him a start at designated hitter. He is batting third against Seth Lugo and the Padres.

  • Justin Turner 1B | CHC

Red Sox's Justin Turner: Could be used at second base

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Turner could be used at second base in the coming days as the team looks to jumpstart its offense, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

Turner has made four appearances at second base this season, but his last start at the position came all the way back in September of 2015. Given that he's now 38, it would be a stretch to think he could handle the position regularly. It seems as if the Red Sox might be willing to give it a try, though, given how little they've gotten from the keystone from an offensive standpoint. Turner's fantasy managers would certainly welcome him picking up second base eligibility.

  • Mike Ford DH | MIN

Mariners' Mike Ford: Extra-base hit barrage in win

Ford went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a solo home run and an additional run in a win over the Giants on Tuesday.

Ford has been trending up at the plate for some time, and Tuesday might ultimately qualify as the crescendo in that hot streak. The trio of extra-base hits means Ford has almost as many combined doubles and home runs (nine) as singles (10) across his 74 plate appearances. Ford's slugging percentage is also now up to a career-high .618, the byproduct of a career-best 48.9 percent hard-hit rate per Statcast.
