Diamondbacks' Pavin Smith: Ready for rehab assignment

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said that Smith (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Reno on Tuesday, MLB.com reports.

Smith had been taking live at-bats in simulated games at the organization's training facility in Arizona and is now ready to test himself in an uncontrolled game setting. According to Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com, Lovullo said that he's hopeful Smith will be ready to return from the 10-day injured list during the Diamondbacks' next homestand, which begins Aug. 18. Once he's activated, Smith should reclaim a near-everyday role at either first base or designated hitter after he posted an .817 OPS in 264 plate appearances prior to landing on the shelf July 6 due to a right oblique strain.

Devers went 2-for-2 with two walks and a solo home run in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Nationals.

The 28-year-old slugger got the Giants on the board by taking Brad Lord deep in the sixth inning. Devers has found a groove since the All-Star break, slashing ,276/.389/.526 over his last 20 games with five of his 22 homers on the season, and his conversion to first base seems to be going smoothly. While he was in the lineup as the DH on Saturday, Devers has played eight games so far at first base, leaving him close to gaining eligibility in most fantasy formats.

  • Shohei Ohtani DH | LAD

The two-way star has now reached the 40-homer mark in three straight seasons and in four of his past five campaigns. While he won't approach his historic 50-50 performance from 2024 with only 16 steals so far, matching or surpassing last year's 54 homers remains within reach.

Ozuna didn't play in Game 1 but got the start at DH while batting cleanup in Game 2. He certainly did clean up, rocking Miami starter Sandy Alcantara for a pair of homers amounting to four total runs across the fourth and fifth frames. Ozuna has five home runs and 11 RBI across his past 11 contests, helping his case to remain Atlanta's regular DH after losing his grip on that role at times this season. He's started four of the team's past five games following a three-game stretch out of the lineup between Aug. 2 and Aug. 5.

  • Austin Hays LF | CHW

Reds' Austin Hays: Not in Saturday's lineup

Hays isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Pirates.

Hays will get a day to regroup after going 0-for-8 with three strikeouts through the first two games of the series. His absence will allow Miguel Andujar to work as the Reds' DH while batting fourth.

  • Giants' Wilmer Flores: Sitting out seventh straight game

Flores (hamstring) isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Nationals, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Still bothered by his tight left hamstring, Flores is now set to miss his seventh consecutive start. The Giants are still hoping the 34-year-old will return soon enough to keep him off the IL, but after a full week of him not playing any games, the team may need to change their plans soon. Rafael Devers will serve as the designated hitter Saturday while Dominic Smith starts at first base.

After some streaky hitting in July, Devers has started August fairly well, going 7-for-26 (.269) with two homers and six RBI over his first seven games of the month. Overall, he's at a .255/.380/.462 slash line with 21 homers, 79 RBI, 66 runs scored and a stolen base through 117 games between the Giants and Red Sox, but his numbers have been notably down since he was dealt to San Francisco.

Marte went 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run in Friday's 3-2 loss to Milwaukee.

The veteran outfielder clobbered his first homer since coming off the injured list in late July and his fifth of the year overall, but he missed a chance at some heroics when he was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second base on a Jeff McNeil single for the game's final out. Marte continues to play a part-time role alongside Mark Vientos at designated hitter, and since the beginning of July he's hitting .349 (15-for-43) with a homer, five doubles, four runs, three RBI and one stolen base.
