  • Matt Carpenter DH | STL

Cardinals' Matt Carpenter: Eyeing rehab assignment soon

The Cardinals are hopeful Carpenter (foot) will be ready to begin a minor-league rehab assignment next week, the Associated Press reports.

St. Louis probably won't map out a rehab schedule for Carpenter until he ramps up his baseball activities, but the report at least offers optimism that his latest stay on the injured list will likely be a brief one. As was the case during Carpenter's first IL stint earlier this month, rookie Tommy Edman will continue to serve as the Cardinals' primary third baseman while the veteran is on the shelf.

  • Marcell Ozuna DH | PIT

Cardinals' Marcell Ozuna: Cleared for baseball activities

The Cardinals cleared Ozuna (finger) to resume baseball activities Friday after he turned in an encouraging workout Thursday, the Associated Press reports.

Ozuna has been shut down since June 29 with right hand and finger fractures, and he's faced persistent swelling stalling his recovery process. The inflammation has apparently subsided, so expect Ozuna to gradually add more activities to his regimen as he works his way back from the 10-day injured list. He could be ready to begin a minor-league rehab assignment at some point late next week if all goes well in his workouts over the next few days.

  • Justin Turner DH | CHC

Dodgers' Justin Turner: Starting at third base

Correcting a previous update, Turner is starting at third base and batting third Friday against the Marlins.

Turner will aim to extend his modest hitting streak to three games Friday. He's reached base safely in five of his last six contests.

  • Alex Dickerson DH | ATL

    Giants' Alex Dickerson: Sitting Friday

Dickerson isn't in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Mets, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Dickerson fell a home run short of the cycle Thursday in the series opener, going 3-for-7 with a double and a triple in a 3-2 victory. He'll head to the bench for the second matchup of the series, allowing for Mike Yastrzemski to shift to left field and for Austin Slater to pick up a start in right.

  • Justin Turner DH | CHC

Dodgers' Justin Turner: Bows out of starting nine

Turner isn't in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Marlins.

Turner will head to the bench despite collecting four base knocks (including two extra-base hits) over his last two contests. Max Muncy moves over to third base with Turner riding the pine.

  • Alex Dickerson DH | ATL

Giants' Alex Dickerson: Triples, doubles in win

Dickerson went 3-for-7 with a triple, a double and a run scored in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Mets.

Dickerson tripled to deep right center in the second inning, singled in the 11th, then led off the 16th frame with a double and eventually scored the game-tying run after Brandon Crawford followed suit with a double of his own. On the season, Dickerson is slashing .412/.474/.794 with eight doubles, four home runs, three triples and 19 RBI over 68 plate appearances.

  • Harold Ramirez DH | WAS

Marlins' Harold Ramirez: Goes deep in victory

Ramirez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a 4-3 victory against the Padres on Thursday.

The 24-year-old hasn't displayed much power this season, but he has over the last few days. He has four extra-base hits in the last four games, and dating back to July 6, Ramirez has two homers in his most recent seven contests. Ramirez is batting .286 with four home runs, 24 RBI, 29 runs and two steals in 203 at-bats this season.

  • Brad Miller DH | SD

Phillies' Brad Miller: Back to bench

Miller is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Dodgers, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Miller picked up a start at third base in both of the past two games, smacking a home run and driving in three runs between the contests. Now that Maikel Franco has recovered from his groin injury, he'll take back his usual duties at the hot corner while Miller returns to his normal bench role.

  • Mark Vientos DH | NYM

Mets' Mark Vientos: Finding power stroke

Vientos went 3-for-4 with a double and a solo home run for Low-A Columbia on Wednesday.

That's three homers in the last five games for Vientos, and the Mets' No. 4 fantasy prospect is now slashing a fantastic .380/.446/.680 through 14 games in July. He won't turn 20 until December, so any success he has in full-season ball is impressive, but his recent hot streak is offering hope that the power potential scouts saw in his lanky 6-4 frame is quickly becoming actual in-game power. Vientos is still at least a couple of years from the majors, but a big second half will send him skyrocketing back up prospect lists.

  • Franmil Reyes DH | WAS

Padres' Franmil Reyes: Back in lineup

Reyes (undisclosed) is back in the lineup Wednesday against the Marlins.

Reyes was a late scratch Tuesday, but it's possible that was nothing more than a strategic change, as he hit a pinch-hit homer in that game and won't miss any more time. He'll play right field and bat cleanup Wednesday.
