  • Kaleb Ort RP | LAA

Red Sox's Kaleb Ort: Likely to serve as opener Wednesday

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said after Tuesday's loss to the Marlins that Ort will likely be the team's opening pitcher for Wednesday's game versus Miami, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Ort worked as the opener June 19 for the Red Sox, and he went 2.1 innings against the Yankees while allowing two runs in the first game of a doubleheader. The right-hander will likely get a chance to go through the Miami lineup one time before giving way to the rest of the Boston bullpen, so he doesn't project to have a chance at qualifying for a win.

  • Athletics' Richard Lovelady: Throws 20-pitch bullpen session

Lovelady (elbow) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session before Tuesday's game versus the Yankees, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Lovelady has been on the 15-day injured list with a strain in his left elbow since June 16. The left-hander will likely need to throw a couple more sessions and may need a rehab assignment before having a chance to rejoin the Oakland bullpen in the early portion of July.

  • Liam Hendriks RP | MIN

White Sox's Liam Hendriks: Cleared for throwing

Hendriks (elbow) is scheduled to play catch Wednesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

It will be his first throwing of any kind since he was placed on the injured list June 11 with right elbow inflammation. Hendriks could perhaps be ready to return to the White Sox shortly after the All-Star break if he is able to avoid setbacks, but there is no official timetable yet. He's made only five appearances in the majors this year, mostly due to an offseason diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

  • Calvin Faucher RP | MIA

Rays' Calvin Faucher: Reinstated, optioned to Triple-A

The Rays reinstated Faucher (elbow) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday and optioned him to Triple-A Durham.

Faucher began a rehab assignment in rookie ball Monday, but the Rays decided to keep him in their farm system rather than have him rejoin the bullpen. The 27-year-old righty holds a 5.21 ERA and 1.58 WHIP through 19 innings this season and could return to the majors later this year if he performs well in Triple-A.

  • Josh Taylor RP | KC

Royals' Josh Taylor: Needs back surgery

Taylor is scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a herniated disc in his lower back, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Taylor was placed on the IL in late May due to left shoulder impingement syndrome and suffered this back injury while ramping up his throwing progression. There is no longer a timetable for his return to the Royals' bullpen.

  • Penn Murfee RP | CHW

Mariners' Penn Murfee: To undergo UCL surgery

Mariners general manager Justin Hollander announced Tuesday that Murfee needs season-ending UCL surgery, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Murfee has battled elbow problems for much of the season and can now be ruled out until sometime in 2024, with the possibility he misses the campaign altogether if he's forced to undergo Tommy John surgery in the coming weeks. This is a big blow for the Mariners, as the 29-year-old reliever boasts a 2.70 ERA with 92 strikeouts in 83.1 innings since he debuted last season.

  • Josh Staumont RP | CIN

Royals' Josh Staumont: Suffers setback with neck

Staumont suffered a setback this week in his recovery from a neck strain, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Staumont has been sent for a fresh round of tests to determine the severity of the setback. He was placed on the injured list in early June and might not be ready to return to the Royals' bullpen before the All-Star break.

  • Will Vest RP | DET

Tigers' Will Vest: Lands on IL with leg strain

Detroit placed Vest on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right lower leg strain.

Vest suffered the injury in Monday's series opener against the Rangers and will be sidelined through the All-Star break. He leaves behind a 2.73 ERA and 32:9 K:BB through 29.2 innings of work this season with the Tigers.

  • Tigers' Anthony Misiewicz: Called up Tuesday

Misiewicz was called up from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday.

Misiewicz will join Detroit's major-league roster after the team claimed him off waivers from Arizona on June 18. The left-hander had struggled to a 5.63 ERA and 1.75 WHIP with six strikeouts over eight innings in seven appearances with the Diamondbacks before being designated for assignment June 12, but he'll look to turn it around with the Tigers.

  • Yimi Garcia RP | TOR

Blue Jays' Yimi Garcia: Expected to avoid IL

Garcia (knee) is expected to avoid the injured list, Mitch Bannon of SI.com reports.

Garcia hasn't pitched since experiencing right knee discomfort during a relief appearance Saturday versus the Athletics, but he should be available again out of the Toronto bullpen within the next couple of days.
