  • Tommy Kahnle RP | BOS

Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Eying weekend return

Manager Aaron Boone said Kahnle (shoulder) is hoping to return from the 10-day disabled list Friday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Kahnle was originally hoping to rejoin the Yankees prior to Monday's series opener against the Twins, but it now sounds like Friday is a more realistic return date. He's set to begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Low-A Charleston on Monday, and if all goes well he could be back in the Yankees' bullpen by the weekend. The reliever has been sidelined since mid-April with a shoulder injury.

  • Yankees' Giovanny Gallegos: Called up to majors

Gallegos was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday.

Gallegos tossed 20.1 innings for the Yankees last season, recording an unspectacular 4.87 ERA, though his strikeout (25.0 percent) and walk (5.7 percent) rates were both strong. He'll fill a low-leverage role in the Yankees' bullpen. Clint Frazier was sent down to Triple-A on Sunday in a corresponding move.

  • Miguel Castro RP | CHW

Orioles' Miguel Castro: Shifts back to bullpen

Castro made two appearances for the Orioles out of the bullpen during their four-game series with the Red Sox over the weekend, tossing three scoreless, no-hit innings while walking three and striking out one.

After keeping the Royals off the board for 4.2 innings in a mop-up outing May 10, Castro had been tabbed to replace Chris Tillman (back) in the rotation after the latter was placed on the 10-day disabled list. Castro was lined up to make his first start last Wednesday against the Phillies, but a postponement ultimately prevented that from happening. The Orioles then appointed Triple-A Norfolk righty David Hess for Sunday's game in Boston when a fifth starter was required, resulting in Castro's window for joining the rotation coming to a close. Castro will likely get an opportunity to start games for the Orioles at some point this season, but it's uncertain when that might happen with manager Buck Showalter seemingly content to stick with Hess as the fifth member of the rotation for now.

  • Emilio Pagan RP | CIN

Athletics' Emilio Pagan: Relies more on fastball in big-league return

Pagan, who notched his first win of the season Saturday against the Blue Jays in his initial appearance since returning from Triple-A Nashville, used his fastball a season-high 86.2 percent of the time in that outing, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. "I've got to stick with what I do and believe that it will work out for the best more often than not: Throwing the fastball up in the zone, the slider off that, working in the split whenever I get a chance, whenever it's a good situation for it," Pagan said.

Pitching coach Scott Emerson stated the right-hander's velocity was also up slightly to the 95-96 mph range during the appearance, which he emphasized can make a notable difference with a "mistake pitch" such as that one. Pagan had struggled while relying less on his power pitch and more on his slider before being demoted May 2, giving up seven earned runs on 13 hits over his last six appearances. Manager Bob Melvin saw Pagan's effort Saturday as a reflection of what his reliever is capable of when he pitches to his strengths. "It just seemed like he was confident," Melvin said. "Things like that don't show up, but those two innings we got from him kept us where we could have the potential comeback. He has it in him. It probably was good for him to go down and work on his strengths."

  • Edwin Diaz RP | LAD

Mariners' Edwin Diaz: Effective in non-save scenario Sunday

Diaz fired a scoreless 10th inning in an extra-innings win over the Tigers on Sunday, allowing a hit while recording a strikeout.

Diaz got 14 of his 17 pitches into the strike zone while preserving a 2-2 tie, lowering his ERA to 1.93 in the process. The hard-throwing right-hander had bounced back nicely from his second blown save of the season by closing out Friday night's one-run win over the Tigers, and Sunday's effort represented his fourth scoreless appearance over the last five trips to the mound.

  • Matt Andriese RP | MIA

Rays' Matt Andriese: Takes loss Sunday

Andriese (1-2) allowed two unearned runs on two walks and a wild pitch over two innings in a loss to the Angels on Sunday. He also recorded two strikeouts.

The 28-year-old right-hander followed Sergio Romo after the latter started for a second consecutive day. After a mostly uneventful first 1.2 innings, Andriese struggled with his control, allowing Andrelton Simmons to reach first on an error, walking Zack Cozart, and uncorking a wild pitch while facing Luis Valbuena that moved both runners over. Valbuena would eventually plate Simmons with a groundout, while Cozart subsequently crossed the plate on a Martin Maldonado sacrifice fly allowed by Jose Alvarado, a run that also went on Andriese's ledger. Despite Sunday's difficulties, Andriese has actually enjoyed a successful month, having dropped his ERA from 4.32 to 3.14 while giving up just two earned runs over 12 innings across six appearances.

  • Chris Martin RP | TEX

Rangers' Chris Martin: Mops up Sunday's loss

Martin struck out two over a scoreless ninth inning in Sunday's 3-0 loss to the White Sox.

Martin was activated off the disabled list earlier in the day and got some easy work in a low-leverage situation. The 31-year-old right-hander submitted some good work before going down with a forearm injury, so we would expect him to be used in a setup role during games in which the Rangers hold a lead -- something that hasn't happened often in 2018.

  • Ken Giles RP | ATL

Astros' Ken Giles: Remains perfect in save opportunities

Giles got the save against the Indians on Sunday, as he didn't allow a baserunner in his two-thirds of an inning in the Astros' 3-1 victory.

Giles remained perfect in save opportunities on the season, bagging his eighth of the year by retiring the final two hitters of the game against Cleveland. Giles' ERA on the season is currently 3.60, but that's mainly due to one bad outing against the Yankees on May 1 that saw him give up four earned runs in just one-third of an inning. He's converted five straight save opportunities since then without allowing a run and still has yet to issue a walk in 15 innings this season.

  • Twins' Fernando Rodney: Earns ninth save

Rodney struck out the side to successfully convert the save Sunday against the Brewers.

Rodney was called in to protect a two-run lead, and he did so to record his ninth save of the season. He has now converted his last six save opportunities, quieting talk of him losing the closer role.

  • Reynaldo Lopez RP | ATL

White Sox's Reynaldo Lopez: Bounces back

Lopez (1-3) allowed two hits and walked two while striking out eight across eight shutout innings to earn the win Sunday against the Rangers.

Lopez bounced back from his last start -- a disastrous six run outing -- and looked to be in complete control, needing only 107 pitches to complete his eight innings of work. He used a combination of strikeouts and groundballs to allow only two baserunners after the third inning. The 25-year-old has an impressive 2.98 ERA and 1.16 WHIP, but his peripherals suggest he needs to continue to show skill growth like today to maintain those results moving forward.
