  • Yankees' Yoendrys Gomez: Struggling with control

Gomez tossed two-thirds of an inning against San Francisco on Friday, allowing one run on no hits and four walks. He struck out two.

Gomez entered in the sixth inning with New York trailing by seven and promptly walked the first three batters he faced. The righty rebounded to strike out Matt Chapman and Heliot Ramos with the bases loaded, but he then issued another free pass to force in a run. Gomez didn't get a chance to throw another pitch, as Mother Nature intervened, and the contest was called due to inclement weather. Overall, Gomez threw just 14 of 33 pitches for strikes in the outing, continuing a troubling early season trend -- through seven innings this season, he's walked eight batters. Of additional concern is that Gomez's velocity was down Friday, as he averaged just 90.1 mph on his fastball. However, he said through an interpreter after the contest that he "felt good" and suggested that the rough weather may have affected his performance, mentioning "some factors" that he had to deal with, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. The Associated Press also notes that Gomez had trouble gripping the ball due to the rain.

  • Tim Herrin RP | CLE

Guardians' Tim Herrin: Earns second win

Herrin (2-0) allowed one hit over 1.1 innings to pick up the win in Friday's 7-0 victory over the Royals.

Starter Tanner Bibee was pulled after giving up a fourth walk and with Cleveland leading, 3-0, in the fifth inning, paving the way for Herrin to vulture the win. The reliever has two wins and two holds over six appearances, allowing one run while striking out five over five innings. Herrin shined for the Guardians in 2024, posting a 1.92 ERA over 75 regular-season appearances (fifth in MLB). The lefty typically pitches when the Guardians are leading and/or to get out of trouble created by another pitcher.

  • Will Vest RP | DET

Tigers' Will Vest: Secures first win

Vest (1-0) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief and earned the win in Friday's 7-6 victory over the Twins. He allowed one hit and struck out two.

Vest recorded the last out of the bottom of the seventh inning and then pitched a clean eighth as well. After allowing a run in his first appearance of the year back on March 28 against the Dodgers, the veteran righty has rattled off five straight scoreless outings. Overall, Vest has a strong 1.59 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and seven strikeouts across 5.2 innings of relief. He should continue to work in a high-leverage role in front of Tommy Kahnle.

  • Twins' Kody Funderburk: Recalled from St. Paul

The Twins recalled Funderburk from Triple-A St. Paul on Saturday.

After pitching 5.2 shutout frames with a 7:2 K:BB to start the year in Triple-A, Funderburk will now join the big-league bullpen to replace Scott Blewett, who was DFA'd in a corresponding move. Funderburk owns a 5.01 ERA and 1.44 WHIP across 46.2 frames in his MLB career, so he may be limited to low-leverage situations to begin with while on the Twins.

  • Scott Blewett RP | STL

Twins' Scott Blewett: Dropped from 40-man

The Twins designated Blewett for assignment Saturday.

Blewett made two appearances after being selected from the minors, allowing one earned run while striking out five batters and walking none across 4.2 innings. Despite his strong performance, the Twins will move him to the minors and call up Kody Funderburk from Triple-A to fill the open spot in the bullpen.

  • Chris Martin RP | TEX

Rangers' Chris Martin: Serves up go-ahead homer in loss

Martin (0-2) took the loss Friday against the Mariners after giving up two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings. He struck out one without walking a batter.

Martin served up a go-ahead two-run homer to Cal Raleigh in the eighth inning, allowing the Mariners to score what were ultimately the winning runs. Although the veteran right-hander entered spring training as Texas' presumed favorite for saves, he's fallen behind Luke Jackson in the bullpen pecking order to open the campaign. Even so, Martin holds a 2.25 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 12:2 K:BB with four holds over eight innings this year, so he should remain in the high-leverage mix going forward.

  • Andres Munoz RP | SEA

Mariners' Andres Munoz: Locks down another save Friday

Munoz picked up the save Friday against the Rangers after giving up one hit in a scoreless ninth inning. He struck out one.

Jonah Heim singled to bring the potential tying run to the plate, but Munoz was able to get Dustin Harris to strike out and Marcus Semien to ground into a double play to preserve the victory for the Mariners. The hard-throwing right-hander has been a lights-out closer to begin the campaign, having not yielded a run while converting each of his first five save chances to go with 10 punchouts over seven innings.

  • Tommy Kahnle RP | DET

Tigers' Tommy Kahnle: Converts second save

Kahnle allowed a run on three hits and struck out one without walking a batter over one inning to earn the save in Friday's 7-6 win over the Twins.

Kahnle gave up a run for the first time in five innings this season. Ty France connected for a two-out single in the ninth inning, but Kahnle got Mickey Gasper on a groundout to end the threat. Friday's outing wasn't the best show of Kahnle's early work, but he now has two saves with a 1.80 ERA, 0.60 WHIP and 5:0 K:BB this season. That's put him atop the Tigers' closer committee so far -- he's tied for the team lead with Brant Hurter with two saves, but Hurter's saves have been of the three-inning variety as a long reliever. Kahnle represents a decent speculative option for fantasy managers in search of saves, but the Tigers' bullpen could end up being one where the hot hand at any given time is the one getting the ninth-inning duties.

  • Sean Newcomb RP | CHW

Red Sox's Sean Newcomb: Handed second loss

Newcomb (0-2) allowed six runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out six over four innings to take the loss against the White Sox on Friday.

The Red Sox's defense committed five errors, but the mostly cost one came as part of the White Sox's four-run fourth inning. This got Newcomb's pitch count up to 94 (60 strikes), and the offense didn't bail him out. He's now failed to complete five innings in all three of his starts this season, posting a 4.97 ERA, 2.13 WHIP and 15:7 K:BB over 12.2 innings, and he'll continue to struggle as long as he's dealing with that much traffic on the bases. Newcomb is tentatively projected to remain in the rotation for one more turn, as Brayan Bello (shoulder) and Lucas Giolito (hamstring) could need one additional rehab start each. With that, Newcomb's next start is projected to be on the road versus the Rays.

  • Pete Fairbanks RP | MIA

Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Logs third save

Fairbanks earned the save in Friday's 6-3 win over Atlanta, allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth inning.

Fairbanks tossed 17 pitches (12 strikes) and was able to overcome a Drake Baldwin double to earn his third save of the year. Fairbanks has posted a 1.50 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 7:3 K:BB across six innings to start the season and has converted all three of his save opportunities.
