Red Sox's Matt Barnes: Serves suspension, wins Sunday

Barnes (3-0) completed his four-game suspension Sunday and pitched a scoreless inning to earn the win in Boston's 6-2 victory over the Cubs.

The Red Sox pieced together the eighth inning while Barnes was out of action, but he was back to being the setup guy for closer Craig Kimbrel on Sunday. As it turned out, the Red Sox scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth in what had been a tie game, giving him the win and negating the save opportunity for Kimbrel. The right-hander's return coincides with the Orioles arrival at Fenway Park for a four-game set beginning Monday. As you may recall, it was Barnes' wayward pitch to Baltimore's Manny Machado, in retaliation for a perceived reckless slide, that got him suspended.

  • Joe Jimenez RP | ATL

Tigers' Joe Jimenez: Optioned to Triple-A Fresno

Jimenez was optioned to Triple-A Fresno on Sunday, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Jimenez has struggled mightily in the majors this season. He's thrown 4.1 innings over five games and has given up six runs on two walks and five hits, two of which were home runs. In a corresponding move, Chad Bell was recalled from Fresno.

  • Ken Giles RP | ATL

Astros' Ken Giles: Collects one-out save Sunday

Giles threw a single pitch to record the final out of Sunday's game against Oakland to collect his sixth save of the season.

The Houston closer has now strung together 5.1 scoreless innings over his past six appearances with four saves. With the Astros sporting a 16-9 record, Giles projects to continue padding the saves column, and his recent form has probably strengthened his job security.

  • Sean Manaea SP | NYM

Athletics' Sean Manaea: Will only miss one start

Manager Bob Melvin confirmed that Manaea (shoulder), who was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday, would only miss one turn in the rotation, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The Athletics were already set to activate Sonny Gray (back) from the DL on Tuesday to give the team five healthy starters, so it was an easy decision for manager Bob Melvin to temporarily shelve Manaea and grant him some additional time to recover from the left shoulder strain. Manaea is expected to throw a side session in the coming days, and if all goes well, he'll likely come off the DL when immediately eligible May 7 to start against the Tigers. Jharel Cotton or Jesse Hahn would be most at risk of losing his rotation spot once Manaea is activated.

  • Twins' Hector Santiago: Expected to rejoin team Monday

Santiago (personal) is expected to rejoin the Twins on Monday, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Santiago was placed on the bereavement list Friday and has been away from the team during its current series with the Royals to attend his grandmother's funeral in New Jersey. The 29-year-old is scheduled to throw a light side session Monday and is on track to start Tuesday's game against the Athletics.

  • Sean Manaea SP | NYM

Athletics' Sean Manaea: Placed on 10-day DL

Manaea (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday.

The Athletics were already anticipating that Manaea would miss his next scheduled start after he strained his left shoulder during his last outing Wednesday against the Angels, so the team will opt to move him to the DL to create some roster flexibility. It's unclear if Manaea will miss more than one start due to the injury, but further word on that front should arrive when the team evaluates the left-hander over the next few days. It's expected that Sonny Gray (back), who is set to return from the DL on Tuesday, will replace Manaea in the rotation.

  • Yankees' Aroldis Chapman: Clipped in hand Friday

Chapman took a groundball off the palm Friday, but manager Joe Girardi doesn't believe it will impact his availability, George A. King of the New York Post reports.

Chapman wasn't needed in the Yankees' 12-4 win Saturday, but he reported feeling okay and should be available going forward. It's the second scare the left-handed flamethrower had this week as he was also seen grabbing his elbow after picking up a save on Wednesday, but for now it looks like he'll escape both of these incidents unscathed. Through nine outings, Chapman has been as good as advertised with 13 strikeouts, five saves and a 1.08 ERA.

  • Tommy Kahnle RP | BOS

White Sox's Tommy Kahnle: Works high-leverage spot Saturday

Kahnle struck out all three batters faced in the eighth inning of Saturday's 6-4 extra-inning win over the Tigers.

With the White Sox holding a two-run lead entering the eighth inning, that's a spot normally reserved for Nate Jones. However, he was unavailable after pitching three times in the previous four days, so manager Rick Renteria went to Kahnle, who has been fantastic since being called up. After Saturday's performance, he has 19 strikeouts and a 1.00 ERA over nine innings. Jones remains the preferred choice to set up closer David Robertson, but Kahnle has worked his way into a key seventh-inning role in close contests while Chicago is without the services of Jake Petricka and Zach Putnam.

  • Jesse Chavez RP | ATL

Angels' Jesse Chavez: Takes fourth loss Saturday

Chavez (2-4) took the loss Saturday against the Rangers, allowing four runs on eight hits and a pair of walks across six innings of work. He also struck out three.

The 33-year-old was cruising through his first four frames of the evening, but the wheels came off in the fifth, when Nomar Mazara, Carlos Gomez and Rougned Odor all collected two-out hits to put the Rangers up for good. This hiked Chavez's pitch count up to 97 in his six innings, with 60 of those offerings going for strikes. Fortunately for him, he'll get to return home in his next start Friday against the Astros. He holds a 2.32 ERA in 31 innings over the last three seasons in Angel Stadium.

  • Greg Mahle RP | LAA

Angels' Greg Mahle: Designated for assignment

Mahle was designated for assignment Saturday, the Orange County Register's Jeff Fletcher reports.

The Angels brought up bullpen reinforcement (Jose Valdez and Daniel Wright) and needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster, so Mahle was the casualty. He has a 3.60 ERA and four strikeouts in 10 innings of relief at Triple-A this season.
