  • Red Sox's Joely Rodriguez: Back with big club

The Red Sox selected Rodriguez's contract from Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Rodriguez has allowed 12 runs (eight earned) with an 11:2 K:BB over 11 innings during his time with the big club this season. He'll provide manager Alex Cora with another left-handed relief option.

  • Nick Vespi RP | PHI

Orioles' Nick Vespi: Optioned to Triple-A

The Orioles optioned Vespi to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

Rill notes that this is the fifth time Vespi has been optioned this season, which is the maximum number allowed before he has to pass through waivers should the O's want to call him up and send him down again. The southpaw has posted a 2.92 ERA and 9:3 K:BB across 12.1 innings during his multiple stints this year in the big leagues.

  • Keegan Akin RP | BAL

Orioles' Keegan Akin: Reinstated from paternity leave

The Orioles activated Akin from the paternity list Friday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

Akin missed the last three games while tending to more important family matters but will be available for the remainder of the Orioles' weekend series against the Astros. The left-hander has had an excellent season for Baltimore, collecting a 3.52 ERA and 78:16 K:BB over 64 innings.

  • Ryan Yarbrough RP | NYY

Blue Jays' Ryan Yarbrough: Nabs win in bulk relief

Yarbrough (5-2) earned the win over the Angels on Thursday, allowing three hits and striking out four batters over five scoreless innings in bulk relief.

Ryan Burr opened the contest for Toronto and pitched a scoreless first frame. He surrendered a leadoff single in the second and then turned the ball over to Yarbrough, who followed with five scoreless innings during which he allowed just three singles and a hit batsman. The outing was the longest for Yarbrough since joining the Blue Jays via a trade with the Dodgers on July 30 -- before Thursday, he hadn't pitched more than two innings in an appearance for the Blue Jays. The left-hander has been pitching well of late, giving up only one run across his past nine innings spanning three outings.

  • Mason Miller SP | SD

Athletics' Mason Miller: Hits 20-save mark

Miller picked up the save Thursday against Tampa Bay, allowing one hit with two strikeouts across a scoreless ninth inning.

The uber-talented 25-year-old became the 17th closer to reach 20 saves and extended his scoreless inning streak to 11 frames. Miller has appeared in 41 games this season, tallying a 1.85 ERA and an 81:17 K:BB across 48.2 innings.

  • Brock Burke RP | CIN

Angels' Brock Burke: Serving as opener Thursday

Burke will serve as the Angels' opening pitcher in Thursday's game versus the Blue Jays, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports.

Griffin Canning is on turn in the rotation, but he looks like he'll be utilized in bulk relief once Burke exits the game. Burke has tossed 3.2 scoreless innings with a 5:2 K:BB since being claimed off waivers by the Angels last week.

  • Penn Murfee RP | CHW

Astros' Penn Murfee: Pulled off assignment

The Astros pulled Murfee off his rehab assignment Thursday due to discomfort in his right elbow, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Murfee initially reported soreness after making a rehab outing with Single-A Fayetteville last week. The Astros then made the decision to shut him down for a few days, but the 30-year-old's no-throw period will now be extended indefinitely after his elbow failed to show improvement. He's spent the 2024 campaign recovering from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last July, and it's unclear when he'll be able to retake the mound.

  • Matt Bowman RP | MIN

Orioles' Matt Bowman: Gets call-up to big club

The Orioles selected Bowman's contract from Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday.

The journeyman right-hander will be pitching for the seventh MLB team of his career and his fourth in 2024 alone if and when he gets into a game for the Orioles. Baltimore brought Bowman aboard on a minor-league deal last week, and he was quickly advanced to the big-league roster after striking out six batters in three scoreless innings between his two relief outings with Norfolk. Bowman will likely begin his time in Baltimore in a low-leverage role out of the bullpen.

  • Colin Selby RP | BAL

Orioles' Colin Selby: Sent down to minors

The Orioles optioned Selby to Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday.

Selby tossed three scoreless frames over two appearances during his brief time with Baltimore. He could get another look later this season but for now will be replaced with fresh bullpen help.

  • Nick Vespi RP | PHI

Orioles' Nick Vespi: Rejoins big club

The Orioles recalled Vespi from Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday.

Vespi will kick off his sixth stint in the big leagues this season, as he's been a popular option for a call-up whenever the Orioles have needed a fresh bullpen arm. Over his 11.1 innings spanning 10 appearances with Baltimore, Vespi has given up four earned runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out seven.
