Yankees' Clay Holmes: Tosses two scoreless innings

Holmes (2-4) earned the extra-inning win Saturday over the Red Sox, walking one and striking out two over two scoreless and hitless innings.

Holmes had blown two straight save chances entering Saturday. He didn't have a lead to protect in the ninth inning of this game, but he kept it tied, and then stayed on to defend a three-run lead in the 10th. Holmes is now at a 2.74 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 45:11 K:BB with 21 saves in 28 chances this season. Despite some rough outings lately, his status as the Yankees' closer is not in question.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Allows run in return

Santos (knee) allowed a run on two hits and a hit batsman and struck out one over two-thirds of an inning in Saturday's 6-3 win over the White Sox.

As expected, Santos was available to pitch after sustaining a minor right knee injury Wednesday. He was once again shaky, putting three of the five batters he faced on base. Santos was charged with a run after Andres Munoz allowed one of them to score on a wild pitch. Through 4.2 innings this season, Santos has a 4:1 K:BB but has allowed four runs while adding a hold, a blown save and a loss across five appearances. He'll likely continue to see high-leverage work, but the Mariners' trade for Yimi Garcia further complicates the path for Santos to get a share of saves.

  • Andres Munoz RP | SEA

Mariners' Andres Munoz: Grabs four-out save

Munoz struck out two and did not allow a hit, walk or run over 1.1 innings to earn the save in Saturday's 6-3 win over the White Sox.

Munoz allowed a runner he inherited from Gregory Santos to score on a wild pitch in the eighth inning. In the ninth, Munoz was sharp to finish off his 17th save of the campaign. This was the second outing in a row in which he allowed an inherited runner to score, but he has not been charged with a run over his last 9.1 innings despite a modest 8:5 K:BB in that span. For the season, Munoz has a 1.31 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 51:18 K:BB through 41.1 innings.

  • Alex Faedo SP | TB

Tigers' Alex Faedo: Opening Sunday's contest

Faedo will serve as the Tigers' opening pitcher for Sunday's game against the Twins, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.

Faedo will make his second start of the season Sunday, though he'll likely be limited to one or two innings before exiting the contest. It's unclear if the Tigers will have a bullpen game or utilize a bulk reliever, but Kenta Maeda would be the likeliest candidate to cover multiple innings should Detroit opt to go the latter route.

  • Jose Marte RP | LAA

Angels' Jose Marte: Joining active roster

The Angels recalled Marte from Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday.

The Angels' 26-man roster had an opening following a trade Saturday that sent Carlos Estevez to the Phillies in exchange for a pair of minor-league pitchers. Marte will fill that opening for his second MLB stint of the season. The 28-year-old right-hander pitched 12.2 innings during his first stint and logged a 3.55 ERA and 1.11 WHIP.

  • Clayton Beeter RP | WAS

Yankees' Clayton Beeter: Moved to minor-league 60-day IL

Beeter (shoulder) was transferred from the 7-day injured list to the 60-day IL at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on July 22.

Beeter last pitched for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on May 15, and he was subsequently transferred to the 7-day IL due to a shoulder injury. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said July 9 that the 25-year-old was in danger of missing the remainder of the season, so it's not surprising to see him transferred to the 60-day IL. Beeter had been pitching well prior to getting hurt, posting a 2.53 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 44:21 K:BB over 32 innings for the Triple-A club. He also got into one game for the Yankees, allowing one hit in a scoreless inning versus Houston on March 29.

  • Rays' Shawn Armstrong: Serving as opener Sunday

Armstrong will serve as the Rays' opening pitcher for Sunday's game against the Reds, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Armstrong will open his seventh game of the season and will likely throw one or two innings before giving way to Tyler Alexander, who is expected to work in bulk relief. Armstrong threw two scoreless innings with four strikeouts Tuesday while serving as an opener in the Rays' game against the Blue Jays.

  • Alex Speas RP | MIN

Red Sox's Alex Speas: Departs 40-man roster

The Red Sox designated Speas for assignment Saturday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Speas will be removed from the Red Sox's 40-man roster to make room for Danny Jansen, who's coming over from Toronto via trade. Speas was claimed off waivers by Boston on June 29 but has been with Triple-A Worcester since.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Likely available Saturday

Santos (knee) is feeling better and will likely be available out of the bullpen for Saturday's game against the White Sox, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.

Santos exited Wednesday's game with a right knee injury and underwent an MRI that "came back OK," per manager Scott Servais. The right-hander has made progress in the last 24 hours and should be available to pitch against his former team Saturday night. Since being activated from the 60-day IL on July 8, Santos has allowed three runs in four innings.

  • Sammy Peralta RP | COL

White Sox's Sammy Peralta: Back down to Charlotte

The White Sox optioned Peralta to Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday.

Right-hander Davis Martin will take Peralta's place on the active roster. In his three major-league outings after being called up from Charlotte on July 20, Peralta allowed one run on five hits and three walks while striking out four across 5.2 frames. Across 18 appearances with Charlotte this year, Peralta holds a 1.08 ERA and 0.74 WHIP across 16.2 innings.
