Melancon earned the save against Arizona on Friday, pitching one scoreless inning and allowing one hit while striking out one.

There was some question heading into the campaign about who would get the ball for the Padres in the ninth inning, but manager Jayce Tingler has all but erased that mystery by going to Melancon with the team's first two save chances. For his part, the right-hander has found success in both opportunities, converting on both chances and allowing only one hit over two frames. San Diego has plenty of options if Melancon should eventually falter, but for now the veteran appears to be the first choice for save chances for a Padres team expected to win many games.

Rogers walked one and struck out one in a scoreless eighth inning to earn a hold in Friday's 6-3 win over the Mariners.

Rogers was charged with a blown save in Thursday's loss to the Mariners, but manager Gabe Kapler showed confidence in the 30-year-old right-hander by putting him into a high-leverage situation for a second straight game. Rogers responded well with a clean inning to help preserve the Giants' three-run lead. Rogers is expected to be part of a closer committee this year, but it appears Jake McGee has the edge for ninth-inning duties to start the season.

Peralta (1-0) struck out two over 1.1 perfect innings to earn the win Friday versus the Mariners.

The 29-year-old relieved Johnny Cueto and finished the sixth inning before retiring the side in the seventh. Peralta enjoyed his best major-league season in 2020 with a 3.29 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 25:11 K:BB across 27.1 innings. The southpaw hasn't recorded a save in the big leagues yet, so expect him to continue seeing most of his appearances in the middle innings.

Graterol, who was placed on the 60-day injured list Friday, isn't injured but is building up his arm strength after dealing with COVID-19, Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times reports.

According to the report, Graterol is not expected to actually miss 60 days and will join the Dodgers bullpen once he is back to form, although there was no indication the move was back-dated. Graterol was unable to have a normal buildup this spring, but he has been throwing batting practice sessions.

Beede (elbow) is throwing bullpen sessions twice a week and is progressing well in his rehab from March 2020 Tommy John surgery, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

He is progressing at the alternate training site and could return to game action in May or June. It is unclear if Beede will build up as a starter at Triple-A once he is fully healthy, or if the Giants will opt to deploy him out of the bullpen this season.

Brebbia (elbow) is throwing bullpen sessions twice a week and is progressing well in his rehab from June 2020 Tommy John surgery, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

He is progressing at the alternate training site and could return to the Giants bullpen in the second half.

Gallegos (1-0) fired a perfect eighth inning in Thursday's season-opening win over the Reds, recording a pair of strikeouts.

Gallegos was sharp after an uneven spring during which he pitched to a 7.04 ERA and .355 BAA across 7.2 innings (eight appearances). The hard-throwing right-hander could see some ninth-inning opportunities while Jordan Hicks is eased back into the closer role, and Gallegos should also log plenty of eighth-inning chances as the campaign unfolds.

Guzman (elbow) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to March 29.

The 25-year-old was sidelined with right elbow inflammation in early March and was unable to fully recover before the start of the season. Guzman made his big-league debut with one appearance last season and figures to join Triple-A Jacksonville for the start of the minor-league season in May once healthy.

Young (0-1) allowed two hits and a run while striking out one in 1.1 innings, recording both the loss and blown save in Thursday's 8-7 loss to San Diego.

The lefty put together a mundane spring training after posting an unremarkable 5.44 ERA in 2020 while working as both a starter and reliever. Performances like Thursday's will do Young no favors in earning more opportunities out of the bullpen. Injuries in the rotation may still push him into an occasional spot start, especially in the absence of Zac Gallen (forearm), but Young will have to make significant improvements to merit any fantasy consideration.

Nelson pitched two-thirds of an inning against Colorado on Thursday, allowing two runs on one hit and two walks while striking out one. He also uncorked two wild pitches.

Nelson was detrimentally wild in his first appearance since 2019, throwing only 15 of 28 pitches for strikes and twice watching runners cross the plate following a wild pitch. The right-hander made the Dodgers' roster in a bullpen role as the result of a strong spring, and it would be understandable if his ineffectiveness Thursday was at least partially tied to rust and nerves. He'll get more opportunities to prove he still has something left in the tank, though Nelson doesn't figure to pitch in high-leverage spots out of the gate.
