  • David Bednar RP | NYY

Pirates' David Bednar: Secures third save

Bednar picked up the save Monday against the Brewers. He pitched one shutout inning, allowing one hit and no walks with one strikeout.

Bednar appeared to be back to his All-Star form Monday night, locking down his third save without issue. The one hit he allowed came via an infield single from the speedy Jackson Chourio. Despite sporting an unsightly 10.13 ERA, Bednar is firmly cemented as the Pittsburgh closer.

  • Nick Avila RP | BAL

Giants' Nick Avila: Back down to Triple-A

The Giants optioned Avila to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday.

The move comes with Luke Jackson (back) being reinstated from the 15-day injury list. Avila has struggled over his six outings with the Giants this season, posting a 7.04 ERA and 1.70 WHIP over 7.2 frames with seven strikeouts and two walks.

  • Luke Jackson RP | SEA

Giants' Luke Jackson: Taken off IL

The Giants reinstated Jackson (back) from the 15-day injured list Monday.

Jackson was placed on the 15-day IL after sustaining a lower-back strain in the Giants' season opener against the Padres. Jackson appeared in 33 games out of the bullpen last season, posting a 2.97 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 43:15 K:BB over 33.1 innings. The Giants optioned right-hander Nick Avila to Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move.

  • Paul Sewald RP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Set for rehab assignment

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Monday that Sewald (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Reno, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

Sewald sustained a Grade 2 left oblique strain late in spring training and has been on the 15-day injured list all season. The right-hander will likely need multiple rehab outings before he makes his way back to the majors. Kevin Ginkel has done a fine job filling in as the Diamondbacks' closer, but Sewald should eventually get his old job back.

  • Jake Junis RP | TEX

Brewers' Jakob Junis: Hit in head with ball during BP

Junis (shoulder) was struck in the head by a ball during batting practice in Pittsburgh on Monday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

Junis was down on the field for several minutes after a ball hit by a Pirates player caught him in the head. He was alert and responsive after eventually getting to his feet and was taken to an area hospital for evaluation. Junis is currently on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement and had recently began a throwing program.

  • Phillies' Christian McGowan: Makes season debut

McGowan struck out four and allowed two earned runs on three hits and one walk over 3.2 innings Thursday for Double-A Reading after being reinstated from the development list.

McGowan didn't open the season as a member of Reading's roster, but that was likely just an organizational decision to manage the 24-year-old right-hander's workload. He missed the majority of the 2023 campaign while completing his recovery from April 2022 Tommy John surgery.

  • Reds' Casey Legumina: Called up from Triple-A

The Reds recalled Legumina from Triple-A Louisville on Monday.

He'll join the 26-man active roster as a replacement for right-hander Frankie Montas (forearm), who was placed on the 15-day injured list. Legumina made 11 appearances out of the Cincinnati bullpen in 2023 but has pitched exclusively for Louisville through the first month of the season, logging a 4.50 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 11:1 K:BB in 10 innings. He'll likely handle a low-leverage relief role while he's up with Cincinnati.

  • Tobias Myers RP | NYM

Brewers' Tobias Myers: Returns from Triple-A

The Brewers recalled Myers from Triple-A Nashville on Monday.

Myers received a call-up to the majors last week and didn't make an appearance before being optioned to Nashville. This time around, Myers could fill the rotation spot vacated by Wade Miley (elbow), who was placed on the 15-day injured list but had been in line to start Tuesday in Pittsburgh. Myers holds a 1.62 ERA and 22:7 K:BB over 16.2 innings this season at Nashville. He would be making his major-league debut when/if he gets into a game.

  • JT Chargois RP | TEX

Marlins' JT Chargois: Starts up rehab assignment

Chargois (neck) struck out one over a scoreless inning in his rehab appearance Sunday for Triple-A Jacksonville.

Chargois missed most of spring training due to neck spasms before he opened the season on the 15-day injured list, so he'll likely require at least a few more appearances in the minors before the Marlins are comfortable activating him. Once he's added back to the 26-man active roster, Chargois is expected to work in a setup or middle-innings role out of the Miami bullpen after registering a 3.61 ERA and 1.25 WHIP while collecting one win, one save and four holds over 42.1 innings in 2023.

  • Mets' Sean Reid-Foley: Returns from injured list

The Mets activated Reid-Foley (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Monday.

Reid-Foley has been out all season with a right shoulder impingement, but he's ready to go now after making three scoreless rehab appearances. The 28-year-old should fill a middle relief role for the Mets.
