Sandoval (back) will miss the remainder of the season, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Sandoval landed on the 10-day injured list in mid-August due to a left lumbar stress reaction, and general manager Perry Minasian confirmed Friday that the southpaw will miss the remainder of the season. The 24-year-old put together a career-best season in 2021 with a 3.62 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 87 innings across 17 appearances (14 starts).

Manager Bob Melvin said Friday that he's "optimistic" Irvin (hip) will make his next scheduled start against Detroit on Tuesday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Irvin allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks before exiting Tuesday's loss after three innings due to hip discomfort. Based on Melvin's comments, the lefty is trending toward being able to take the ball Tuesday in Detroit, but how he progresses in coming days will likely be the decisive factor in that decision. Daulton Jefferies is expected to start in his place if he's unable to go.

Maeda (forearm) will undergo season-ending surgery Wednesday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.

Maeda was evaluating several options after he sustained a forearm injury Saturday, but he'll ultimately opt for surgery. Manager Rocco Baldelli said Friday that he isn't yet sure what procedure the right-hander will undergo, but Tommy John surgery is on the table. Regardless of the type of procedure, Maeda won't pitch again until at least 2022.

Arihara (shoulder) was assigned to Triple-A Round Rock on Friday to continue his rehab assignment.

Arihara pitched two scoreless innings with Double-A Frisco in his first rehab outing last Sunday. He'll now move to Round Rock for one more minor-league appearance, and if all goes well, he'll likely be activated to join the Texas bullpen as a long reliever.

Keller was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right lat strain Friday.

Keller was scratched from Thursday's start against the Mariners, and he'll miss at least one more turn through the rotation while he's on the injured list. However, the Royals haven't yet announced whether the right-hander will miss more than the minimum 10 days.

Criswell (undisclosed) was activated from the 7-day injured list by High-A Lansing on Friday, Melissa Lockard of The Athletic reports.

Criswell has been sidelined for the past three-plus months by the unspecified injury, but he was activated Friday and is expected to pitch Sunday for the Lugnuts. The 2020 second-round pick made only one start in May before going down with the injury.

Farrell (oblique) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday.

The move clears room on the 40-man roster for the Twins to select Ian Gibaut's contract. It won't affect Farrell's timeline, as he's already been out for more than 60 days with an oblique strain. He could be back fairly soon, as he's already made a pair of rehab appearances.

Severino (shoulder) has been cleared to resume his throwing program, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

The right-hander recently met with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who gave the thumbs up for Severino to begin throwing again. He had been shut down since Aug. 13 after experiencing tightness in his shoulder. Severino was in the midst of a rehab assignment prior to his latest setback, so he should resume throwing in minor-league games in the near future. It's unclear when he might be able to rejoin the big club or what his role will be when he returns.

Overton was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo prior to Friday's game against Detroit.

Overton was sent down to Buffalo on Wednesday, but he will return to the big leagues just two days later with Brad Hand going on the bereavement list. The right-hander has pitched well during four major-league appearances this season, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out four across 6.2 innings.

Urena (groin) will return to start Saturday's game against the Blue Jays but won't throw more than two or three innings, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

A groin issue has kept Urena sidelined since mid-July. He's been a starter all season but wasn't pitching deep into games prior to the injury, throwing no more than 4.2 innings in any of his last six starts. That may have been mostly due to performance rather than workload management, however, as he struggled to an 11.76 ERA over that stretch. Tyler Alexander is expected to follow him out of the bullpen Saturday.
