  • James Paxton SP | BOS

Yankees' James Paxton: Takes loss in Yankees debut

Paxton (0-1) allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits across 5.2 innings to take the loss during Saturday's game against the Orioles. He struck out five and walked one.

Paxton kept the Orioles off the scoreboard through five innings but ran into trouble during the sixth due to three singles and a throwing error. Overall it's a tough-luck loss for the 30-year-old as the Yankees were unable to put much together offensively. Paxton next lines up to start Thursday, once again versus the Orioles.

  • Chris Bassitt SP | BAL

Athletics' Chris Bassitt: Returns to mound work

Bassitt threw off a mound Friday for the first time since taking a liner off his shin during the Athletics' series against the Mariners in Japan, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The bruise sent Bassitt to the injured list to open the season, though it doesn't appear that he'll be out too long. Aaron Brooks is currently the team's fifth starter, but Bassitt could push him for the spot once he's ready to return.

  • Luis Severino SP | ATH

Yankees' Luis Severino: Nearing return to mound work

Manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that Severino (shoulder) could throw a bullpen session early in the upcoming week, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Severino has been long tossing off flat ground for about a week and a half, steadily increasing his throwing distance in each of those sessions. Assuming his shoulder responds well to the activity over the weekend, Severino will take another step forward by getting back on the mound. Despite Severino's continued progress, the Yankees intend to proceed slowly with their young ace, who has already been ruled out through at least April.

  • Domingo German SP | PIT

Yankees' Domingo German: First outing coming Monday

Manager Aaron Boone confirmed that German would make his season debut Monday against the Tigers, James Wagner of The New York Times reports.

German was labeled the Yankees' fourth starter at the conclusion of spring training, so it's unsurprising he'll take the hill for the fourth game of the season. Boone mentioned that the Yankees haven't dismissed the possibility of using an opener Monday, but German will be tasked with covering the bulk of the innings regardless if he serves as the first pitcher of the day or enters the game out of the bullpen.

  • Alex Cobb SP | DET

Orioles' Alex Cobb: Gets green light for home opener

Manager Brandon Hyde confirmed that Cobb (groin) will be ready to return from the 10-day injured list to start Thursday's home opener against the Yankees, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.

The skipper signed off on Cobb's return after the right-hander experienced no issues with his groin while tossing five innings in a minor-league game at extended spring training Friday. Given how deep he worked into the rehab outing, Cobb shouldn't face any strict limitations with his pitch count in his season debut, though the matchup with a power-packed Yankees lineup doesn't make him a comfortable streaming option.

  • Nathan Eovaldi SP | TEX

Red Sox's Nathan Eovaldi: Yields three homers

Eovaldi allowed six runs on eight hits, including three home runs, and two walks over five innings while striking out three during a no-decision against the Mariners on Friday.

The ball was jumping off the Mariners' bats early and often. Even with his electric stuff, Eovaldi wasn't keeping hitters off balance Friday, as he posted just seven swinging strikes. While he pitched extremely well in the playoffs, owners should keep in mind that the right-hander struggled at times during the regular season in 2018, posting a 6-7 record and 3.81 ERA with 101 strikeouts in 111 innings. Although home runs have never really been a problem for Eovaldi in the past, he does tend to be inconsistent.

  • Yusei Kikuchi SP | LAA

Mariners' Yusei Kikuchi: Pitches well in no-decision

Kikuchi gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits, including two homers, and struck out five over six innings Friday but came away with a no-decision in a 7-6 loss to the Red Sox.

Other than the pair of homers, Kikuchi looked very sharp. He had the Mariners in position to win, but the bullpen blew a three-run lead in the final two frames. The southpaw has yielded just three earned runs in 10.2 innings during his first two major-league starts, but he's still searching for his first win.

  • Gerrit Cole SP | NYY

Astros' Gerrit Cole: Handed loss in season debut

Cole (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out 10 over six innings Friday against Tampa Bay.

Cole was handed a two-run lead in the third inning but the Rays would respond with three runs of their own in the third followed by an insurance run in the sixth. The 28-year-old pounded the zone in his season debut, firing 71 of 101 pitches for strikes. Cole will search for his first victory of 2019 in his next outing Wednesday against Texas.

  • Charlie Morton SP | ATL

Rays' Charlie Morton: Notches first win of 2019

Morton (1-0) picked up the win Friday against Houston, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out eight over five innings.

Morton fared well against his former team, tossing 54 of 85 pitches for strikes on the evening. The 35-year-old is coming off one of the best seasons of his career in 2018 (3.13 ERA over 167 frames) and will look to maintain his success following a change in scenery.

  • Matthew Boyd SP | CHC

Tigers' Matthew Boyd: Fans 10 in loss

Boyd (0-1) was saddled with the loss Friday against Toronto after surrendering three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out 10 over five innings.

Boyd had the strikeout pitch working in his season debut, but the Blue Jays finally got to him in the fourth inning and pushed across four runs on four hits and an error. The 28-year-old lefty allowed a career-worst 27 long balls in 2018 over 170.1 innings, so he'll work on keeping the ball in the yard this year.
