  • Chris Sale SP | ATL

Red Sox's Chris Sale: Still not throwing

Sale (shoulder) has not yet resumed throwing as of Friday, the Boston Herald reports.

Sale is eligible to return from the disabled list Saturday but it's clear that that won't be happening. The lefty has reportedly been doing exercises and is feeling better, but the Red Sox have every reason to be cautious with their ace, as they have home-field advantage for the playoffs effectively clinched, with a 9.5-game lead over the next-best team in the league, the Yankees. Sale's return timetable won't become clear until he resumes throwing.

  • Tyler Glasnow SP | LAD

Rays' Tyler Glasnow: Strikes out eight

Glasnow allowed three earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight across five innings Thursday against the Royals. He did not factor into the decision.

Glasnow was limited to a relatively short outing due to struggles with his control, though he generated an impressive 14 swinging strikes on 96 total pitches. Though he has surrendered six free passes across his last two starts spanning 11.2 innings, Glasnow has allowed 3.5 BB/9 across 23.2 total innings as a Ray. He is now fully stretched out, so if he can maintain his improved control, he should be able to pitch deeper into games each time out.

  • Matthew Boyd SP | CHC

Tigers' Matt Boyd: Earns win with six shutout innings

Boyd (8-11) fired six scoreless innings and earned the win Thursday, yielding six hits and a walk while striking out six in the 7-2 win over the White Sox.

Boyd twirled his first scoreless outing of August, lowering his ERA to a respectable 4.09 after Thursday's start. On the year, the 27-year-old now owns a 127:42 K:BB across 141 innings. Boyd will take the mound again Wednesday in Kansas City.

  • Gerrit Cole SP | NYY

Astros' Gerrit Cole: Misses out on two-start week

Cole will make his next start Monday against the Athletics, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic Houston reports.

Cole started the first of the Astros' six games this week Monday in Seattle, giving up three runs (two earned) and striking out seven over five innings in a no-decision. The right-hander looked like he would be in line to make his second start of the week Sunday against the Angels, but manager A.J. Hinch elected to push Cole back an additional day for rest purposes. The Astros appear set to go with another "bullpen game" Sunday, which could feature Brad Peacock as the team's opening pitcher.

  • Artie Lewicki SP | ARI

Tigers' Artie Lewicki: Requires second Tommy John surgery

Manager Ron Gardenhire said Thursday that Lewicki (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery next week and miss the entire 2019 season, Evan Woodbery of MLive Media Group reports.

Lewicki was dealt with more unfortunate news after meeting with an elbow specialist in New York on Wednesday. Though an MRI last week revealed a bone spur but no additional damage, Lewicki continued to deal with discomfort which prompted him to visit Dr. Christopher Arnold, who operated on him during his first Tommy John surgery in high school. He is expected to make a full recovery by spring training in 2020.

  • Neil Ramirez RP | CLE

Indians' Neil Ramirez: Put on DL

Ramirez was placed on the 10-day DL on Thursday due to lower-back spasms.

Ramirez appeared to have suffered the injury during Wednesday's relief appearance against Boston. He will be sidelined for the rest of the month, but isn't expected to miss much more than the minimum while recovering from this issue. in a corresponding move, Josh Tomlin (hamstring) was reinstated from the DL.

  • Angels' Odrisamer Despaigne: Lasts four innings in loss

Despaigne (2-2) gave up three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out four over four innings and taking the loss against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

Despaigne wasn't very efficient in this one, requiring 87 pitches (55 strikes) to complete four frames. The veteran swingman has now give up eight runs with a 7:2 K:BB ratio over eight innings in two starts since joining the Halos via a trade earlier this month. Despite the poor results, Despaigne should get another start early next week against the Rockies as Tyler Skaggs (groin) and Nick Tropeano (shoulder) continue to mend on the DL.

  • Lance Lynn SP | STL

Yankees' Lance Lynn: Fades late in loss to Marlins

Lynn (8-9) took the loss Wednesday as the Yankees fell 9-3 to the Marlins, coughing up five runs on nine hits and a walk over 5.1 innings while striking out six.

The right-hander seemed to have the game well in hand after holding Miami scoreless for five innings, but the wheels quickly came off in the sixth. After a strong start to his Yankees tenure, Lynn's now been tagged for 10 runs in his last two starts. He'll take a 4.84 ERA into his next outing Tuesday at home against the White Sox.

  • Marco Gonzales RP | TEX

Mariners' Marco Gonzales: Blown up by Houston

Gonzales (12-9) had an awful outing Wednesday against the Astros, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in just three innings, striking out three batters.

It's hard to have a terrible outing when you don't walk a batter and don't give up any homers, but Gonzales did just that Wednesday. He allowed hits to 55 percent of the batters he faced. Gonzales has now lost his last four starts and has been particularly poor in his last three, over which he's allowed a combined 19 runs on 31 hits in just 13 innings (a 13.15 ERA). The lefty will look to get back on track Tuesday or Wednesday against the Padres.

  • Charlie Morton SP | ATL

Astros' Charlie Morton: Earns win despite poor outing

Morton improved to 13-3 on the season Wednesday against the Mariners despite allowing six runs in five innings. He gave up seven hits, including one homer, and struck out seven while walking one.

It was hardly a vintage performance from Morton, but his offense bailed him out and allowed him to pick up the win. He looked strong early, opening with three scoreless inning, and didn't start to allow runs until his team had given him an eight-run lead. He gave up a solo shot to Nelson Cruz in the fourth and an RBI double to Robinson Cano in the fifth before things really started to unravel in the sixth. He'll hope to get back on track Tuesday against Oakland.
