  • Yankees' Jordan Montgomery: Resumes playing catch

Montgomery (elbow) threw about 50 or 60 times off flat ground Saturday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Montgomery is expected to gradually increase the distance he plays catch over the next week or so before progressing to mound work. The lefty has been sidelined since May 1 with an elbow strain and will likely require at least two rehab starts before being activated from the 10-day disabled list, so it's not expected that he'll be an option for the Yankees rotation until mid-to-late June at the soonest. His ongoing absence will continue to afford more starting opportunities to rookie Domingo German.

  • Martin Perez SP | ATL

Rangers' Martin Perez: Throwing from flat ground

Perez (elbow) threw from flat ground Monday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Perez threw with a batting glove on his right (non-throwing) hand. He still hasn't thrown a bullpen session, however, suggesting he's still a ways away from a return. Austin Bibens-Dirkx figures to continue to fill in for Perez in the rotation.

  • Carlos Rodon SP | NYY

White Sox's Carlos Rodon: Set for rehab start Tuesday

Rodon (shoulder) will make his next rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday, James Fegan of The Athletic Chicago reports.

Rodon will make his next rehab start on schedule after exiting his last outing for precautionary reasons after taking a comebacker off his forehead. Manager Rick Renteria said Rodon will be reevaluated following Tuesday's outing, but is expected to require at least a couple more rehab starts before rejoining the big club. He's been sidelined all season after undergoing shoulder surgery back in September.

  • Marcus Stroman SP | NYY

Blue Jays' Marcus Stroman: Set to throw this week

Stroman (shoulder) will throw long toss and a side session this week, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.

Stroman has been out since May 11 with shoulder fatigue. He resumed throwing last Monday and will continue to ramp things up in the coming week. Stroman's possible return date remains unclear, but more will hopefully be known following his side session. In the meantime, Sam Gaviglio should continue to fill in for Stroman in the rotation.

  • Vidal Nuno SP | WAS

Rays' Vidal Nuno: Grabs first win Sunday

Nuno (1-0) fired three scoreless innings in a win over the Orioles on Sunday, allowing three hits and four walks while recording a strikeout.

The veteran southpaw provided three valuable innings after Sergio Romo flamed out in his latest start. Nuno has proven to be a timely callup from Triple-A Durham thus far, as he's now worked four scoreless innings over his first two appearances, both of which came in the weekend series versus Baltimore.

  • White Sox's Lucas Giolito: Focuses on strikes in side session

Giolito had a side session Saturday with pitching coach Don Cooper, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Cooper gave Giolito simple instructions: throw strikes. The right-hander has walked 37 batters over 49 innings and focused on getting over the ball and creating downward angle toward the zone during Saturday's session. When Giolito finished off last season with a strong run and looked promising in spring training, Cooper said he was throwing quality strikes early in the count, but lamented they're not getting that now. Giolito, whose ERA spiked to 7.53 after his previous start, is scheduled to pitch Tuesday in Cleveland.

  • Cole Hamels SP | SD

Rangers' Cole Hamels: Roughed up by Royals

Hamels (3-5) allowed five earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out two across 6.1 innings to take the loss Sunday against the Royals.

Though Hamels was tagged for runs in each of the first three innings, he did manage to work reasonably deep into the game to relieve some of the damage to his ratio stats. He was taken deep twice by the Royals, marking his fifth start of the season in which he has allowed multiple home runs. Four of those outings have come at home, where he is currently allowing 2.5 HR/9.

  • Jose Berrios SP | TOR

Twins' Jose Berrios: Gets loss despite strong start

Berrios (5-5) got the loss against the Mariners on Sunday, giving up two runs on eight hits over 7.1 innings, striking out eight and walking one as the Twins eventually fell 3-1.

It was a strong outing for Berrios, who was unlucky to get tagged with the loss as his offense could only muster one run of support off Seattle starter Mike Leake. He's on a great roll right now, as he's given up just five earned runs with a brilliant 27:4 K:BB over his last 22.2 innings to bring his ERA down to 3.67 on the season. Perhaps most impressively, he's also boasting a pristine 0.95 WHIP through 68.2 innings.

  • Jason Hammel SP | TEX

Royals' Jason Hammel: Throws 5.1 shutout innings

Hammel (2-5) allowed four hits and two walks while striking out 10 across 5.1 scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday against the Rangers.

Hammel looked uncharacteristically deceptive Sunday, generating 14 swinging strikes on his way to a season-best 10 strikeouts. He has now turned in strong efforts in consecutive starts, combining to allow only one earned run in 12.1 innings while striking out 16. His season-long numbers are inflated from a strong of bad starts, but he has allowed three earned runs or fewer in seven of his 11 starts this season.

  • Kevin Gausman SP | CHC

Orioles' Kevin Gausman: Shelled for seven runs in loss

Gausman (3-4) allowed seven runs on six hits and two walks across 2.2 innings while taking the loss Sunday against the Rays. He struck out one.

Gausman allowed a solo home run in the first inning, but most of the damage against him came in the third, when he surrendered six runs on five hits, two walks and a hit batsman. It was a rather disappointing outing for Gausman, who was coming off a 10-strikeout masterpiece against the White Sox and faced a favorable matchup. The right-hander had pitched three quality starts in his previous four coming in, but he's now allowed six runs or more in two of his last three. He'll take a 4.31 ERA into Friday's scheduled start against the Yankees.
