  • Martin Perez SP | ATL

Rangers' Martin Perez: Activated ahead of start

Perez (thumb) was activated from the disabled list and confirmed as the starting pitcher for Monday's game against the Red Sox.

Perez is ready to return to the rotation after missing just one start while on the disabled list with a fractured right thumb on his non-throwing hand. The 26-year-old owns a 4.70 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 61:32 K:BB through 15 starts (82.1 innings) this season, and he's set to face a Red Sox team that has scored more runs than any other club over the past week. A corresponding roster move is expected to be announced prior to Monday's contest.

  • Red Sox's Eduardo Rodriguez: Targeted for MLB start Sunday

Rodriguez (knee) will start for the Red Sox on Sunday against the Rays if Tuesday's rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket goes well, Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald reports.

Rodriguez's first rehab start last Thursday didn't go well as far as results are concerned, but these starts are more about how the pitcher feels after throwing in a competitive environment. From that standpoint, the left-hander has remained on schedule. A follow-up bullpen session over the weekend came and went without incident.

  • James Paxton SP | BOS

Mariners' James Paxton: Improves to 6-3 with Sunday win

Paxton (6-3) allowed a single run on two hits and two walks while striking out three batters through 6.1 innings during Sunday's win over the Angels.

The hard-throwing lefty is having a solid season with a 3.27 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 9.9 K/9. His 2.96 FIP suggests everything he's done to this point is sustainable, too. Paxton is in matchup-proof territory, and he projects to face the Athletics at Safeco Field in his next start.

  • Mike Clevinger RP | PIT

Indians' Mike Clevinger: Shuts down Tigers for fourth win of season

Clevinger (4-3) threw six innings of one-run ball in Sunday's win over the Tigers, allowing two hits and five walks with seven strikeouts.

Clevinger struggled to put hitters away, tying a season high in walks, but he was effective at limiting hard contact and was only scored upon by an RBI double from J.D. Martinez in the third inning. He has now struck out 16 while allowing just two earned runs over his last 12 innings, turning in back-to-back quality starts against two strong offenses in the Tigers and Rangers. Clevinger's recent success has lowered his ERA to an impressive 3.33 for the season, and he will look to keep it rolling Saturday against this same Detroit lineup.

  • Tigers' Justin Verlander: Shelled in loss to Indians

Verlander (5-5) was shelled for seven runs on nine hits and three walks across 3.1 innings in Sunday's loss to the Indians. He did not record a strikeout.

Verlander constantly worked with men on base during this short outing, and some timely home runs by the Cleveland offense accounted for the bulk of the damage against him. The seven earned runs produced his second-highest mark of the season, and this was the first time since the 2006 season that he did not record a punchout in an outing of any duration. Verlander had been throwing the ball relatively well prior to this shellacking, giving up no more than three earned runs in any of his last six outings, and he will look to bounce back Saturday as he takes a 4.96 ERA into his rematch with the Indians on their turf.

  • Felix Jorge SP | MIN

Twins' Felix Jorge: Optioned to Double-A

Jorge was optioned to Double-A Chattanooga on Sunday, MLB.com reports.

Jorge impressed at times in his big-league debut during the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Royals, tossing five innings and giving up three runs to earn the win. Since the Twins only needed him as their sixth starter due to the heavy schedule over the past week, Jorge won't stick around in the rotation, but his performance Saturday could make him the top candidate for a promotion the next time a new starter is required.

  • Luke Farrell RP | WAS

Royals' Luke Farrell: Demoted to Triple-A

Farrell was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Sunday, MLB.com reports.

Farrell was just making a spot start for Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader with the Twins, and after he was lit up for five runs in 2.2 innings, it was an easy decision for the Royals to drop him from the 25-man roster. The right-hander should have a rotation spot waiting for him upon returning to Omaha, with whom he had posted at least nine strikeouts in three of his last four starts.

  • Jose Quintana SP | COL

White Sox's Jose Quintana: Escapes with no-decision against Rangers

Quintana didn't factor into the decision Sunday after allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts over 4.1 innings against the Rangers.

Quintana was on the hook for the loss until Yolmer Sanchez launched a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth. He's 2-0 in his past four outings after starting 2-8 in his first 13, but the 28-year-old lefty's 4.45 ERA is still easily the worst of his career. Lowering that mark will be an uphill battle in his next scheduled start Saturday at Coors Field.

  • Luis Severino SP | ATH

Yankees' Luis Severino: Surrenders season-worst line to Astros

Severino (5-4) was roughed up for six runs on nine hits over 5.1 innings in Sunday's loss to the Astros despite issuing only one walk and striking out seven.

While opposing starter Mike Fiers was able to overcome control issues by limiting hard-hit balls, Severino had the opposite problem. His nine hits and six earned runs allowed both marked new season worsts, with seven of those hits going for extra bases. Optimists will point to Severino's 19:1 K:BB ratio over the past two starts as a sign of improvement to come, while skeptics will harp on the 23-year-old's 5.92 ERA over his past four outings. He'll be facing a less potent lineup in his next scheduled start at home against the Brewers on Saturday.

  • Alex Cobb SP | DET

Rays' Alex Cobb: Clobbered by Orioles

Cobb gave up seven runs (six earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out three over 6.1 innings against the Orioles on Sunday.

He also hit a batter, so seven of the eight baserunners he allowed came around to score. Manny Machado and Mark Trumbo each took Cobb deep. This snapped a streak of four straight quality starts for the 29-year-old righty. His next start will be Saturday at home against the Red Sox.
