  • Alex Meyer SP | LAA

Angels' Alex Meyer: Beats Jays Sunday with five scoreless innings

Meyer earned his first victory of the season Sunday versus the Blue Jays, striking out seven while allowing two hits and walking three across five scoreless innings.

Meyer had been battered in four appearances this season and entered Sunday with a 8.18 ERA, but he was able to quiet the potent Toronto offense as he threw 13 of 19 first-pitch strikes, induced 11 swing-and-misses, and added six ground ball outs. The Angels have nothing left to play for, so Meyer will get a look through the end of the season and will make his next start Friday in Houston.

  • Marcus Stroman SP | NYY

Blue Jays' Marcus Stroman: Loses Sunday despite quality start

Stroman suffered his ninth loss of the season Sunday versus the Angels despite only allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks across six innings. He struck out three.

Stroman worked out of a couple of jams without serious damage and allowed just one extra-base hit, but the typically potent Jays offense could not pick him up versus Alex Meyer. The right-hander has now rattled off five quality starts in his last seven tries and has lowered his ERA to 4.50. Toronto will need Stroman at his best when the postseason rolls around and he will have the opportunity to build on his recent success Saturday versus the Yankees.

  • Jose Quintana SP | COL

White Sox's Jose Quintana: Rocked by Royals in Sunday start

Quintana was rocked for six runs on 10 hits and three walks across just four innings Sunday versus the Royals. He struck out one as he fell to 12-11 with the loss.

Quintana only allowed three extra-base hits Sunday, but the Royals were able to string together baserunners in the first, second and fourth innings, elevating his pitch count to the extent that he was removed from the game. The left-hander has struggled a bit over his last four outings, as he has a 6.84 ERA across 23.2 innings to raise his seasonal mark to 3.26. He will look to get back on track Saturday against the Indians.

  • Wade Miley SP | CIN

Orioles' Wade Miley: Diagnosed with muscle strain

Updating a previous report, Miley has been diagnosed with a muscle strain in his upper back, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.

Miley left Sunday's game with what was originally referred to as cramps, but it now sounds as if the ailment is slightly more serious, as he has been officially diagnosed with a muscle strain. This may put the left-hander's next start in jeopardy, so his status is worth checking up on later this week.

  • Wade Miley SP | CIN

Orioles' Wade Miley: Exits due to back cramps

Updating a previous report, Miley left Sunday's game due to upper back cramps, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.

Miley appeared to tweak something during his warmups prior to the fifth inning, and it now appears to be regular case of cramping. The lefty will be sure to put an emphasis on hydration heading into his next start, which at this time, doesn't appear to be in grave jeopardy.

  • Wade Miley SP | CIN

Orioles' Wade Miley: Leaves game with unknown injury

Miley left Sunday's game after sustaining an undisclosed injury while warming up before the fifth inning.

Miley had pitched four shutout innings, but apparently was injured before the fifth inning and left the game with the club's trainer. Further information regarding his type of injury should be known in the near future as the team examines Miley.

  • Wade Miley SP | CIN

Orioles' Wade Miley: To be unavailable in early October

Miley will leave the team at the beginning of October when his wife has their child, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

The impact of Miley's eventual absence will depend on the Orioles making the playoffs. Since joining the Orioles, Miley has posted an 8.41 ERA and 1.87 WHIP over eight games.

  • James Paxton SP | BOS

Mariners' James Paxton: Strong start Saturday despite loss

Paxton fell to 4-7 with Saturday's loss to the Astros, but he only allowed two runs on four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in seven strong innings.

Paxton was dominant and hardly allowed a baserunner apart from the sixth inning, when he allowed two runs as four men reached base before he could escape the jam. Paxton has now delivered a pair of quality starts after struggling at the start of the month, and his ERA is down to 3.88. He will next take the mound Friday versus the Twins.

  • Yu Darvish SP | SD

Rangers' Yu Darvish: Rocked for seven runs by A's

Darvish (5-5) allowed seven runs on seven hits and four walks Saturday while striking out eight over five innings in a 11-2 loss against Oakland.

It was all downhill for Darvish after he allowed a leadoff home run to Joey Wendle to start the game and then ran into jams in the second, third and fifth innings. He's now given up five or more runs and seven hits in two of his three September starts. While these implosions are having a negative effect on his ERA and WHIP, the Japanese right-hander is still an elite K artist, striking out 27.7 percent of hitters on the month and 30.2 percent for the second half of the season.

  • Tigers' Justin Verlander: Masterful in seven-inning effort Saturday

Verlander didn't factor into the decision against the Indians on Saturday despite pitching seven strong innings. He struck out seven, walked four, and allowed only one hit.

The ace right-hander had some trouble with his control, but was otherwise dominant, inducing 16 swinging strikes in a bounce-back effort following a five-inning loss to the Orioles in his last trip to the mound. While a complete lack of run support denied him any chance of victory, Verlander now has quality starts in 11 of his last 12 starts. He'll look to secure an eighth season with at least 15 wins when he takes on the Royals next Friday.
