  • Ricky Nolasco SP | ARI

Twins SP Ricky Nolasco battles to get second win on Thursday

Making his second start since returning from the disabled list, Twins starter Ricky Nolasco lasted five innings on Thursday against the A's. He allowed six hits and four runs, while walking one and striking out one, while earning his second victory of the season.

"I just tried to figure out a way to keep the team in there, and the boys picked it up today," Nolasco said, per MLB.com. "The offense and the bullpen came in and [I] got lucky enough to get a win."

Nolasco (2-1) labored, throwing 94 pitches (57 strikes) in the five innings and actually left the game with his team down by a run. But a two-run rally in the bottom of the fifth helped the right-hander secure the victory.

Nolasco, who missed nearly a month while recovering from elbow inflammation, will take a lofty 9.00 ERA into his next scheduled start on Wednesday in Detroit.

The Astros will be seeking one, if not two, starting pitchers this summer, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. However, even though the Astros system is loaded with elite prospects, it doesn't appear Phillies starting pitcher Cole Hamels will be on the Astros' radar.

"Too pricey," one Astros person suggested.

  • Tigers RHP Justin Verlander throws 50-plus pitches Thursday

Tigers ailing right-hander Justin Verlander not only resumed his throwing program Thursday, but he tossed more pitches than scheduled, Brad Ausmus told MLB.com.

Verlander has been sidelined since the regular season began with a triceps strain. It remains to be seen when he returns to the mound in game action.

White Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale has dropped his appeal of a five-game suspension and will begin serving it Thursday, according to CSN Chicago. Sale was suspended for his actions during an April 23 brawl with the Royals.

Sale took a no-decision in his fifth start of the season Wednesday against the Tigers. He was slated to make his next start Monday at Milwaukee, but he will not be eligible to return until Tuesday. Sale is expected to start the next day after his suspension ends, per the Chicago Sun-Times.

Cobb suffered a setback in his recovery from forearm tendinitis, and has yet to play a game in 2015. The possibility of Tommy John surgery could be in play, though the team has not made any official statements as of yet.

  • Chris Sale SP | ATL

White Sox ace Chris Sale not sharp once again on Wednesday

It's not very often that White Sox starter Chris Sale has a bad start. It's even less often that he has back-to-back rough outings. But that's what happened on Wednesday against the Tigers.

After getting knocked around by the Twins in his last start on April 30, Sale gave up five runs on seven hits, walking a career-matching-high five walks in 5 1/3 innings Wednesday against Detroit. This is the first time since 2012 that Sale has had consecutive non-quality starts.

"You're going to have good ones, you're going to have bad ones," Sale said, per MLB.com. "You're going to have a few good ones in a row, you're going to have a few bad ones in a row."

In his last two starts, Sale has surrendered an eye-popping 13 earned runs in just 8 1/3 innings. Is there reason for concern here? The team doesn't exactly think so.

"I think he's going to be all right," manager Robin Ventura said. "I think when he doesn't think too much and he just goes out and pitches is when he's at his best."
