  • Mariners making adjustments to rotation plans

The Mariners have made a change to their rotation plans in order to have Felix Hernandez, Chris Young and Hisashi Iwakuma pitch in a series against Toronto next week, according to The News Tribune.

The rotation this week will feature Hernandez and Young in a two-game series against Atlanta, which starts Tuesday. It will then be Roenis Elias, Iwakuma and James Paxton to open a series against the White Sox, which starts Thursday.

Seattle is pushing back Hernandez to Monday and that leaves an open date Sunday. The News Tribune suggests Taijuan Walker and Erasmo Ramirez are the top two candidates to be recalled to make that start. Walker is slated to pitch Monday for Triple-A Tacoma.

White Sox Jose Quintana wasn't a factor in the decision Sunday after giving up just one unearned run on five hits and two walks in five innings and striking out five in his team's 16-3 loss to the Twins.

Quintana was the only White Sox pitcher to not allow an earned run in the blowout loss, as five relievers combined to allow 15 earned runs. The White Sox starter hasn't given up more than three earned runs in any of his last nine starts, but he has just one win and five no-decisions in his last six games. Quintana owns a 3.04 ERA and 125:42 K:BB ratio in 142 1/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Mariners Friday.

James Paxton settles for a no-decision in first start back from DL

Mariners pitcher James Paxton was unable to factor into the decision in his first start back from the disabled list on Saturday against the Orioles in Baltimore.

Paxton worked past a minor injury scare when he was struck in the back of his right leg by a Caleb Joseph liner in the second inning. He brushed it off and remained in the game. • Justin Verlander encouraged by progress after Friday win

One-time Tigers ace Justin Verlander can now be considered their third starter at best, but he was encouraged by his start Friday night in Colorado. It marked just the second time in 23 outings this season in which he pitched at least eight innings. It also provided his fourth win in last six starts.

"I think pitching is constant tinkering," he told MLive.com. "You're always working on things. This year I made more drastic adjustments than I would have liked but I feel like I'm heading in the right direction. ... I felt lke my breaking ball was better (Friday night). I felt like the slider, when it was right, was really good. I threw a few really good ones later in the game that had a lot of late, sharp bite to them."

Verlander walked none in the defeat of the Rockies after yielding six walks in 13 2/3 innings in his last two starts combined. He has six quality starts in his last eight outings.
