  • Chris Bassitt SP | BAL

White Sox reassign seven to minor-league camp

The White Sox reassigned seven players to minor-league camp Wednesday, including infielder Mike McDade, outfielder Denis Phipps, catcher Kevan Smith and pitchers Chris Bassitt, Parker Frazier, Brian Omogrosso and Mauricio Robles.

The White Sox have 55 players remaining in major-league camp after the moves.

  • James Paxton SP | BOS

James Paxton tosses three scoreless innings Wednesday

Mariners pitcher James Paxton allowed just two hits over three scoreless innings while striking out one in his team's 8-5 loss to the Indians Wednesday.

Paxton's fastball sat in the mid-90s in the start, which gives him five scoreless innings after his first two spring games. He's hoping to break camp in the team's rotation.

  • Chris Sale SP | ATL

Chris Sale clobbered by Padres in spring tuneup

White Sox starter Chris Sale had a tough time against the Padres Wednesday.

Sale gave up six runs in just 2 2/3 innings against San Diego. He was uncharacteristically hittable, surrendering six hits. He walked one batter and gave up one home run. Sale posted a 3.07 ERA in 214 1/3 innings last season.

  • Report: Justin Masterson seeks $40-60 million in multiyear deal

The extension proposal submitted by Indians pitcher Justin Masterson to the team is believed to be in the range of $40 million to $60 million for three-to-four years, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman reported earlier Tuesday that Masterson could be amenable to a three- or four-year deal on the right terms, and the Plain Dealer provided clearer details of the salary the pitcher is seeking. He's making $9,726,500 in his final year before reaching free agency.

  • Yu Darvish SP | SD

Yu Darvish surrenders two runs vs. Angels

Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish allowed two earned runs on three hits and one walk in three innings and gave up one home run in his team's 7-4 loss to the Angels Tuesday.

"I think it was good overall because I was able to try a few things," Darvish told MLB.com through a translator. "In the home run situation, [catcher Robinson] Chirinos wanted a fastball, and I also wanted a fastball. I threw a four-seam fastball just to see if I could get a pop-up. But it was a huge pop-up."

Darvish struck out four in two scoreless innings in his spring debut but didn't manage a single strikeout in three frames Tuesday.

  • Justin Masterson could be open to three-year deal

Indians pitcher Justin Masterson notified the team of his asking price during contract discussions this weekend and could be open to a three-year deal despite potentially being able to land a larger deal on the free-agent market, CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman reports.

The two sides aren't close to reaching an agreement on an extension, but the team is optimistic they could come to terms with Masterson before the end of spring training. He won't getting anything near the six-year, $105-million deal that Homer Bailey received from the Reds if he re-ups with Cleveland.

  • Taijuan Walker SP | LAA

Taijuan Walker set to throw Thursday

Mariners pitcher Taijuan Walker is set to start a throwing program Thursday, according to the Tacoma News Tribune.

Walker has already been shut down during camp due to a shoulder injury. It's unclear if he'll be ready once the regular season begins. Walker posted a 3.60 ERA in 15 innings last season.

  • Vance Worley SP | NYM

    Vance Worley encouraged by outing

Twins pitcher Vance Worley is encouraged about his first spring outing, according to the Star Tribune.

Worley said the biggest difference is that he's healthy during camp. He was dealing with an elbow injury last season, and "couldn't find a way to [throw the ball] down in the zone." He said he had to rediscover is arm slot during the offseason. Worley is competing for a spot in the team's rotation.

He posted a 7.21 ERA in 48 2/3 innings last season.

  • Jose Quintana SP | COL

Jose Quintana surrenders two runs Monday

White Sox pitcher Jose Quintana gave up two earned runs on two hits and two walks in three innings while striking out one in Monday's 9-7 win over the Royals.

It was a rocky spring debut for Quintana, who allowed just five earned runs in 20 innings while striking out 20 last spring. He's coming off a quality season in the White Sox rotation, going 9-7 with a 3.51 ERA in 200 innings in 2013.

  • Drew Smyly SP | CHC

Drew Smyly surrenders two home runs Monday

Tigers pitcher Drew Smyly gave up two solo home runs to former teammate Jhonny Peralta, but that was the only damage the Cardinals could muster against the starter in Monday's 8-5 Tigers win.

Smyly allowed three hits in all while striking out two in three innings in the start, and he felt encouraged by Monday's start despite the home runs.

"I felt like I located pretty well for the most part, threw some good changeups that they swung and missed on," Smyly told MLB.com. "For the most part, I had pretty clean, efficient innings, kept my pitch count low. So that's good. You've got to get quick outs to stay in the ballgame. That's always something to work on. Just keep getting your pitches and location as best you can and prepare yourself for the regular season. There's nothing really in particular. My changeup, I'm going to keep working on that and just try to find everything else out."

Smyly is ticketed for a spot in the rotation after serving as a reliever last season.
