  • Chase Silseth RP | LAA

Angels' Chase Silseth: Goes on Triple-A IL

Triple-A Salt Lake placed Silseth (elbow) on its 7-day injured list Wednesday.

After being reinstated from the Angels' 60-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A on June 25 following a prolonged absence due to right elbow inflammation, Silseth turned in a 3.38 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 7:7 K:BB over 16 innings across four outings with Salt Lake before succumbing to another setback with the elbow. The Angels had labeled Silseth's injury as discomfort coming out of his most recent start for Salt Lake on July 28, but a formal diagnosis for his injury hasn't been provided. In any case, Silseth doesn't look like he'll be back pitching for Salt Lake anytime soon, which will hurt his chances of building a case for a return to the big leagues.

The right-hander has a 4.91 ERA with a 39:13 K:BB across 33 innings this season. He's on track to pitch during a four-game set against the Twins next weekend.

  • Angels' Griffin Canning: Wins despite walking four

Canning (4-10) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks while striking out eight over five innings, earning the win over the Mets on Sunday.

Canning's control was lacking as he threw just 54 of 97 pitches for strikes, but he did a decent job of preventing runs. Harrison Bader and Francisco Lindor each had RBI singles in the contest. It's been up and down results for Canning recently -- this was just the fourth time in 10 starts he's allowed less than four runs, and it was his first win since June 24. The right-hander still has an ugly 5.10 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 93:47 K:BB over 121.2 innings across 23 starts this season. He could match his career high for innings pitched (127) in his next start, which is tentatively projected to be a road outing versus the Nationals.

For the year, he's posted a 3.62 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 113:27 K:BB across 117 innings over 20 starts. He's given up 17 long balls this year after surrendering just 15 over 144 innings in 2023, so it's something to monitor going forward. Hinch suggested Friday that Maeda will eventually rejoin the rotation, per Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. Maeda is essentially stretched out for a starter's workload at this point; he tossed 69 pitches behind opening pitcher Tyler Holton in Saturday's contest.

  • Royals' Michael Wacha: Turns in quality start

Wacha did not factor into the decision after allowing two runs on seven hits and four walks over six innings against the Tigers on Sunday. He struck out two batters in the win.

Since the beginning of July, Wacha has produced four quality starts in six outings, going 4-0 with a 2.78 ERA in the process. For the year, his ERA sits at 3.55 with a 93:35 K:BB through 20 starts. • Royber Salinas SP | ATL

Athletics' Royber Salinas: On mend from shoulder surgery

Triple-A Las Vegas placed Salinas on its full-season injured list after he underwent surgery on his right shoulder July 24, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Salinas hadn't pitched since May 30 before landing on Las Vegas' 7-day IL with the shoulder injury. He presumably tried the rest-and-rehab route to treat the injury, but after making limited progress over the ensuing two months, he ended up being sent in for surgery. Salinas will miss the rest of the season, and his availability for the 2025 campaign could be in jeopardy as well.
