  • Cal Quantrill RP | TEX

Padres' Cal Quantrill: Nabs sixth win

Quantrill (6-3) earned the win Wednesday against the Rays after allowing two runs on three hits over 5.2 innings. He had four strikeouts and one walk.

Quantrill got off to a rough start, as Eric Sogard opened the game with an 11-pitch walk and Tommy Pham subsequently plated him with a two-run home run. However, Quantrill then quickly settled down to deliver a solid performance. The 24-year-old has a 1.31 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 25:6 K:BB over 34.1 innings (six outings) since rejoining the Padres' rotation out of the All-Star break, and he'll look to continue generating a similar caliber of performance in his next start against the Reds.

  • Kyle Freeland SP | COL

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Allows five runs in no-decision

Freeland surrendered five runs on eight hits and one walk over six innings during Wednesday's 7-6 win over the Diamondbacks. He had six strikeouts and did not factor in the decision.

Freeland got into trouble immediately by giving up two runs in the first inning, but he settled down for four scoreless frames before surrendering three more runs in the sixth. The 26-year-old has a 7.01 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 27:11 K:BB over 34.2 innings across his seven starts since rejoining the Rockies' rotation after the All-Star break. Freeland will get to face the Diamondbacks on the road next week.

  • Robbie Ray SP | SD

Diamondbacks' Robbie Ray: Headed for MRI

Ray (back) will undergo an MRI on Thursday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

Ray was removed from Wednesday's game against the Rockies prior to the third inning with a lower back spasm, and he'll head for more tests to determine whether the issue will force him to miss any additional starts. Manager Torey Lovullo said after the game that he's hopeful the left-hander won't be forced to miss much time. Prior to exiting with a trainer, Ray allowed one run on one hit and two walks while striking out two in two innings.

  • Johnny Cueto SP | LAA

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Set for third rehab start Thursday

Cueto (elbow) will make his third rehab start Thursday with High-A San Jose, Ethan Kassel of The San Francisco Examiner reports.

Cueto is expected to increase his pitch count to around 45 as he moves his rehab to a full-season affiliate after his first two came with the Giants' rookie-level Arizona League affiliate. The right-hander tossed two scoreless frames in both of those outings, with manager Bruce Bochy relaying that Cueto "feels great" thus far in his rehab. Since Cueto is on the 60-day injured list, the Giants would need to activate him by Aug. 31 and add him to the 40-man roster in order for him to be eligible for postseason play. That date might represent a reasonable target for Cueto's return to the big club, assuming the Giants aren't too far off the pace for the two wild-card spots by that point.

  • Jerad Eickhoff SP | PIT

Phillies' Jerad Eickhoff: Shifts to 60-day IL

Eickhoff (biceps) was shifted to the 60-day injured list Wednesday.

This move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for Logan Morrison, who had his contract purchased from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Wednesday. Eickhoff, who has been sidelined since June 17, won't be eligible to return until Friday following this move. He's made three minor-league rehab appearances since the start of August, with his most recent coming for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday (he allowed two runs with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings).

  • Robbie Ray SP | SD

Diamondbacks' Robbie Ray: Removed with back spasm

Ray was removed from Wednesday's game against the Rockies due to a lower back spasm.

Ray suffered the injury while warming up prior to the third inning. He allowed one run on one hit and two walks while striking out two in two innings before exiting with a trainer. It's not yet known if Ray will be forced to miss a start due to the injury.

  • Robbie Ray SP | SD

Diamondbacks' Robbie Ray: Exits with trainer

Ray (undisclosed) was removed from Wednesday's game against the Rockies with an apparent injury, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

Ray tossed one warmup pitch prior to the third inning before exiting with a trainer. Prior to exiting, the lefty allowed one run on one hit and two walks while striking out two in two innings.

  • Pirates' Jameson Taillon: Undergoes Tommy John surgery

Taillon underwent Tommy John surgery Tuesday.

Taillon underwent flexor tendon repair surgery Tuesday, and it was determined during the procedure that the right-hander also required Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career. This is a brutal blow for the 27-year-old, who is expected to miss all of the 2020 season as a result. Prior to suffering the injury, Taillon posted a 4.10 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 30:8 K:BB in seven starts (37.1 innings) for the Pirates this season.

  • Zach Eflin SP | BAL

Phillies' Zach Eflin: Set to rejoin rotation

Eflin will start Saturday against the Padres, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

Eflin was shifted to a relief role following the acquisition of Jason Vargas at the end of July, but he's set to reclaim his spot in the rotation with Jake Arrieta (elbow) headed to the injured list. Across 20 starts with the big club this season, the right-hander owns a 4.63 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 92:31 K:BB in 112.2 innings.

  • Jon Gray SP | TEX

Rockies' Jon Gray: Could start Friday

Gray (ankle) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday and could be ready to rejoin the rotation Friday against the Marlins, the Associated Press reports.

Gray had been in line to start Tuesday's eventual 9-3 loss to the Diamondbacks, but he was scratched shortly before the outing due to a sore left ankle, which he suffered when he slipped on the dugout steps in San Diego last week. The Rockies' willingness to have him test out his ankle on the mound Wednesday suggests there's not overwhelming concern about the injury. Due to a team off day Thursday, the Rockies would have the luxury of reordering the rotation in the event Gray isn't ready to start Friday.
