Cardinals' Miles Mikolas: Picks up win over Nationals

Mikolas (14-4) picked up the win Wednesday against the Nationals, allowing four runs on 12 hits while striking out two across 6.2 innings.

Mikolas was far from dominant in this one, but the Cardinals provided him with plenty of run support en route to his team-best 14th win. The right-hander was through four scoreless before allowing a pair of run-scoring doubles in the fifth and sixth frames. He was then pulled with two outs and two on in the seventh inning and both runners would come around to score on Dakota Hudson, spoiling what would have been Mikolas' first quality start in four outings. Mikolas will carry a 3.06 ERA into his next start, which will come at home against the Pirates.

  • Cardinals' Michael Wacha: Set for rehab start

Wacha (oblique) will make a minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Memphis on Friday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Wacha, who was pulled off his rehab assignment at the end of August after suffering a setback, is hoping to throw around 40-to-45 pitches in his return to game action. The Cardinals will likely reevaluate him after Friday's outing before determining his next step.

  • Zack Wheeler SP | PHI

Mets' Zack Wheeler: Set for CT scan

Wheeler will undergo a CT scan on his chest before the Mets leave Los Angeles, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Wheeler was struck in the chest by a Justin Turner liner in the fourth inning Wednesday, but he was ultimately able to stay in the game and finish seven innings -- allowing three runs while striking out nine -- before exiting. The right-hander underwent an X-ray after the contest, which came back negative, but the Mets want to playing it safe and have him further evaluated before clearing him for his next start.

  • Brewers' Freddy Peralta: Set for relief role upon return

Manager Craig Counsell said Peralta will be back with the Brewers in the near future but will not make any more starts for the team this season barring any unforeseen circumstances, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Peralta will be eligible to return to Milwaukee from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Sunday. Though Counsell was straightforward with his line of thinking for the rest of the 2018 season, he remained adamant that Peralta is viewed as a starter by the organization, so expect to see Peralta compete for a rotation spot in spring training. Across 14 outings with the team this year, he's logged a 4.40 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with a 91:39 K:BB in 73.2 innings.

  • Dodgers' Ross Stripling: Set to return Saturday

Stripling (back) will return to action Saturday in Colorado, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

Stripling felt good after a Wednesday simulated game and will return to the mound after an absence of just shy of a month. He's expected to work out of the bullpen upon his return.

  • Zach Davies SP | WAS

Brewers' Zach Davies: Sticks in rotation

Davies is scheduled to make his next start Sunday against the Giants, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

With manager Craig Counsell announcing that Gio Gonzalez would be added to the rotation over the weekend, the Brewers had to decide whether to keep Davies or Junior Guerra as their No. 5 starter. Davies made the choice an easy one after limiting the Cubs to one run and striking out seven over five innings in Monday's win, marking the right-hander's first start with the big club since May 29. Given Guerra's poor form of late -- he's surrendered 24 runs (18 earned) over 13.1 innings in his last four starts -- Davies should have a decent amount of leash in the rotation even if he disappoints during his next turn.

  • Rich Hill SP | KC

Dodgers' Rich Hill: Whiffs eight in win

Hill (7-5) got the win Tuesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out eight over six innings against the Mets.

Hill was tagged for a pair of two-run home runs early, but he was able to settle down from that point to make it through six innings and grab the win. The lefty has struck out at least seven batters in four straight starts and is now at 10.0 K/9 over 108.2 innings for the season. He'll take a 3.73 ERA into Monday's outing against the Reds.

  • Robbie Ray SP | SD

Diamondbacks' Robbie Ray: Whiffs 10 in win

Ray (5-2) tossed 6.1 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts against two hits and two walks en route to picking up the win Tuesday against the Padres.

Ray was dominant, striking out the first four batters he faced while allowing just one runner to get beyond first base all night. The double-digit punchouts were his most since fanning 11 on April 24, and it marked the first time since July that the southpaw was able to make it through six full innings. He'll take a 4.25 ERA and 12.0 K/9 into Sunday's game against the Braves.

  • Joey Lucchesi RP | LAA

Padres' Joey Lucchesi: Takes loss vs. Arizona

Lucchesi (7-8) got the loss Tuesday, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out six over five innings against the Diamondbacks.

All the damage on Lucchesi's ledger came in the second inning, when he allowed a pair of extra-base hits and a walk, but he was able to mostly silence the Arizona bats outside of that. Despite taking the loss, the lefty has now allowed two or fewer earned runs in three straight starts and in five of six outings since the start of August to lower his ERA to 3.59. He'll look to get back in the win column Tuesday in Seattle.

  • Rockies' German Marquez: Fans 11 in no-decision

Marquez struck out 11 and walked two in 6.2 innings against the Giants on Tuesday, allowing two runs on seven hits in a no-decision.

Marquez was actually in line for the loss after giving up a solo home run to Gorkys Hernandez in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie but was bailed out by the Rockies' offense. Marquez has recorded double-digit strikeouts in back-to-back outings, and now has 184 punchouts in 164.1 innings this season. The young righty will carry a 4.05 ERA and 1.24 WHIP into his next start at home against the Diamondbacks.
